Abstract

Diabetic patients experience various challenges in adhering to self-care practices, such as glucose monitoring, diet management, and physical activity, that require a continuum of care. The study aimed to explore the experiences and perceptions of diabetic patients regarding self-care and the factors that influence their adherence. The study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, involving five participants from South Kalimantan. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analysed using the Colaizzi method to identify key themes reflecting self-care experiences. The study results showed that the five participants' understanding of self-care was still diverse, especially regarding glucose monitoring and physical activity. Family support was a significant factor in improving self-care adherence, although the family's understanding of diabetes management sometimes hindered these efforts. Other barriers included limited healthcare access, high-cost medication, and monitoring devices. In addition, participants showed optimism towards future health, but were concerned about the sustainability of self-care practices in the long term. The importance of diabetes management programmes that involve education for patients and families, and policies that support more affordable access to healthcare. A comprehensive approach to diabetes management, including family and community support, can improve patient adherence to self-care and quality of life.

Abstract

Sexual intention has become one of the causes of students engaging in premarital sexual behavior. This study focused on gender, relationships, self-efficacy, self-control, self-esteem, and sexual intention among students. Our research used a cross-sectional design and answered a set of questionnaires consisting of the General Self-Efficacy Scale, Self-Control Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Youth Sexual Intention Questionnaire, and data demographic. The data were analyzed univariate and bivariate using chi-square. 328 students were included. Gender was 192 female (58.5%) and 136 male (41.5%), relationship was 69 (21%) and no having relationship was 259 (79%). The self-efficacy high was 168 (51.2%) and the low was 160 (48.8%), self-control high was 173 (52.7%), and the low was 155 (47.3%), the self-esteem high was 177 (54%) and the low was 152 (46.3%), sexual intention the high was 176 (53.7%) and the low was 152 (46.3%). Factors associated with sexual intention in preventing premarital sexual behavior were gender (p< .05), relationship (p < .05), and self-control (p < .05). Two factors that did not influence sexual intention were self-esteem (p>.05) and self-efficacy (p>.05). Gender, relationship, and self-control were an important factor associate to sexual intentions in preventing premarital sexual behavior.

Abstract

Cancer prevention and early detection efforts in Indonesia remain suboptimal, primarily due to limited public awareness. Therefore, this study evaluated the effectiveness of a card game–based educational intervention in improving women’s knowledge of early cancer detection and healthy lifestyle practices. The researchers employed a quasi-experimental design involving 70 women in Depok and Jakarta, with 40 assigned to the intervention group and 30 to the control group. Eligible participants completed a validated questionnaire before and after the intervention. The intervention group received an interactive education session using card games, while the control group received a standard informational brochure. The ANCOVA analysis revealed a significant increase in post-test knowledge scores in both the intervention and control groups (mean square = 190.301, p < 0.05). However, a significant difference in knowledge score improvement was observed in the intervention group (mean square = 23.618, p < 0.05). These findings suggest that card game–based educational interventions have the potential to improve public understanding of cancer prevention and early detection. It is recommended that larger randomized controlled trials integrate this card game into community health activities (such as school-based programs) to ensure broader engagement and the sustainability of cancer awareness initiatives.

Abstract

Thalassemia is a chronic disease that requires lifelong treatment. Children with thalassemia are highly dependent on their parents for daily care and management. This study aims to identify key themes reflecting the challenges, needs, and expectations of parents caring for children with thalassemia through a qualitative meta-synthesis approach based on Roy’s Adaptation Model (RAM). A literature search was conducted in the PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and ScienceDirect databases for English-language articles published between 2014 and 2024. Twelve studies from six countries were analyzed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). The synthesis identified four meta-themes describing the parents’ adaptation process: (1) physical fatigue and psychosomatic symptoms, (2) psychological stress and parental identity crisis, (3) disruption of family roles and functions, and (4) lack of systemic and social support. These findings emphasize the importance of a multidimensional support approach encompassing emotional, educational, and health policy aspects to improve family quality of life. This study provides a theoretical foundation for family-centered nursing interventions and supports parental resilience.

Abstract

Little is known about the factors influencing elderly individuals’ decisions regarding the COVID-19 booster vaccine, especially given the ongoing evolution of the virus. This study aimed to determine the factors affecting decision-making about receiving the booster doses. A total of 597 participants were recruited through stratified random sampling for this analytical cross-sectional study conducted from August 2023. Research instruments included a questionnaires based on Protection Motivation Theory and intensions to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression. The results showed that the majority of participants were female (67.00%), aged over 66 years (64.32%), and single (72.22%). Notably, 72.22% hesitated to receive the third booster dose, and and 73.87% reported not receiving the booster due to fear of adverse events following immunization. Participants who were retired government officials or in other occupations (Adjusted OR = 3.142, 95% CI:1.938-8.294) had two co-morbidities (Adjusted OR = 4.637, 95% CI: 2.113-9.004), had high perceived severity (adjusted OR = 3.321, 95% CI: 1.943-9.625), had high self-efficacy (adjusted OR = 7.392, 95% CI: 1.042-12.634), and had high protection motivation (Adjusted OR = 6.832, 95% CI: 2.347-14.628) were significantly more likely to decide to receive the COVID-19 booster dose. Nurses should focus on promoting awareness and prevention of adverse effects related to the booster vaccine.

Abstract

Nursing faculty and students consider incivility as moderate to serious problem in nursing education programs. The primary cause of incivility among nursing faculties is stress. Indonesian undergraduate nursing students experience moderate to severe stress throughout the program. This study aimed to examine the effect of stress on incivility among Indonesian undergraduate nursing students and to identify the most significant factors predicting incivility in nursing education. A quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted involving 220 Indonesian undergraduate nursing students from a public university in Indonesia that selected using convenience sampling. The instruments employed were the Student Nurse Stress Index and the Incivility in Nursing Education-Revised Scale. Ethical approval was granted from the relevant faculty. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze data, and multivariate analysis employing Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) was conducted to determine the most significant predictor of incivility. The mean stress score was 67.18, indicating moderate stress, while the mean incivility score y was 46.50, which means high incivility. Age and academic year were negatively associated with incivility in nursing education, with p-values of 0.041 and 0.004, respectively. The clinical concern domain of stress was the most significant predictor of incivility among Indonesian undergraduate nursing students (p=0.000). It is expected that Indonesian undergraduate nursing students will effectively manage stress to control that incivility behavior and prevent negative impacts on themselves and their nursing education institutions. Seeking social support and utilizing campus resources can help alleviate difficulties with class materials, reducing feelings of fear related to failing exams and courses

Abstract

Fatigue is the most common complaint among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis. Energy conservation management involves modifying daily activities to reduce energy expenditure and alleviate fatigue. This study examines the impact of energy conservation management on fatigue levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis. This quasi-experimental study involved 52 hemodialysis patients who were randomly assigned to either the intervention or control group. The study was conducted in a hemodialysis unit at a public hospital in West Sumatra, Indonesia, from July to September 2024. The intervention group received energy conservation management training over a six-week period, comprising 12 sessions. Fatigue levels were assessed using the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F) questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using paired and independent t-tests. The results showed a significant reduction in fatigue in the intervention group (p < 0.001). The mean (SD) fatigue score decreased from 28.92 (6.14) at baseline to 22.04 (4.41) after the 12 intervention sessions. Furthermore, a statistically significant difference in fatigue scores was observed between the intervention and control groups (p < 0.001). Effective energy conservation management reduces fatigue in hemodialysis patients. Nurses can teach this strategy to help patients manage fatigue in daily life

Abstract

Reproductive health knowledge is essential for enabling women to make informed family planning decisions and prevent unintended pregnancies. In Indonesia, awareness of the possibility of pregnancy after childbirth before menstruation resumes remains insufficiently explored. This study examined sociodemographic, economic, and behavioral factors associated with women’s knowledge of postpartum pregnancy risk using data from 40,978 women aged 15–49 years in the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS). A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using multivariate logistic regression with sampling weights to ensure national representativeness. The results showed that higher education (AOR: 1.41; 95% CI: 1.13–1.75) and higher wealth status (AOR: 1.35; 95% CI: 1.21–1.50) were positively associated with knowledge. In contrast, rural residence (AOR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.83–0.98) and lack of formal education were linked to lower awareness. Older age and being currently married were also associated with higher knowledge levels. Women using contraceptive methods, particularly calendar-based methods (AOR: 1.27; 95% CI: 1.15–1.40), were more likely to have adequate knowledge. These findings highlight urban–rural disparities in reproductive health knowledge and emphasize the need to strengthen education, expand healthcare access, and improve family planning counseling, particularly in underserved communities.

Abstract

Happiness at work (HAW) plays a critical role in nurses’ performance and their ability to deliver compassionate care, as it affects nurses’ motivation, empathy, and caring behavior. However, culturally grounded interventions to improve nurses’ happiness, particularly within Islamic spiritual frameworks, remain underexplored. Therefore, this study examined the effect of an Islamic-based spiritual program based on local religious and cultural values on nurses’ HAW. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. The intervention included a structured religious talk on the meaning of life and daily listening to Quranic recitations (murottal) during work for four weeks. The study involved 64 inpatient nurses from hospitals. The participants were assigned to an intervention group (n = 32) and a control group (n = 32). Data were collected using the Shortened HAW questionnaire and analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA and the Kruskal–Wallis test. The results showed that happiness scores increased significantly in the intervention group (mean difference = 1.53, p < 0.001; η² = 0.354). In contrast, the control group showed minimal change. These findings indicate that Islamic-based spiritual programs can effectively enhance nurses’ happiness at work and may contribute to nurse retention, strengthen caring values, and improve healthcare quality.

Abstract

Resilience is crucial for adolescents, a vulnerable group that may suffer adverse effects from earthquakes. A large number of adolescents continue to experience stress and trauma as a result of such events. This study aimed to determine the differences in psychological resilience among adolescents based on gender, parenting style, and psychosocial problems. This quantitative research employed a cross-sectional design with a sample size of 232 participants. Simple random sampling was used, with the inclusion criteria targeting adolescents who resided in the earthquake-affected area, directly experienced the earthquake, and exhibited psychological impacts such as anxiety, fear, and excessive sadness. Adolescent resilience was measured using a modified version of the Brief Resilience Scale questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a three-way ANOVA with a 2x2x2 factorial design. The results showed that the average resilience score was 19.25 out of a maximum possible score of 30, suggesting that adolescent resilience remains considerably below its potential maximum. Psychological resilience among adolescents in earthquake-affected areas was not significantly influenced by gender (p = 0.381), parenting style (p = 0.607), or psychosocial problems experienced during the earthquake (p = 0.331). Therefore, adolescent resilience appears unaffected by these factors. However, further research is warranted to explore other potential influences, including coping mechanisms, decision-making skills, and stress management.
