Abstract

The high prevalence of chronic energy deficiency (CED) among adolescent girls may be due to a lack of knowledge and unhealthy dietary practices. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the SICARE application in improving healthy dietary knowledge among adolescent girls. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group comprising 59 participants in each group. The study was conducted at a high school. The researchers used a knowledge questionnaire and the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) as measurement tools. The results showed a significant improvement in CED knowledge in the intervention group after using the application, from 12.68 ± 2.35 to 20.85 ± 1.37 (p < 0.05). The participants’ eating habits also improved over the two weeks, with increased consumption of rice as a staple food, eggs as the primary source of animal protein, and tempeh and tofu as plant protein sources. Water spinach and papaya were the most frequently consumed vegetables and fruits. The findings suggest that the SICARE app is an effective educational tool for increasing knowledge about CED and promoting healthier eating habits among adolescent girls. Thus, the app can be used to address the high prevalence of CED in this population.

Abstract

Nursing aesthetics, acknowledged as a fundamental pattern of knowing, emphasizes the integration of aesthetic dimensions into nursing practice; yet the lived experiences of Filipino nurses in this domain remain under‐investigated. Employing a phenomenological design, this study explored how 15 purposively selected nurses in Negros Oriental Province perceive and enact aesthetic care. Data were elicited through participant-generated drawings followed by semi structured interviews and analyzed using Kongsuwan’s framework for interpreting artistic works and texts. Rigor was maintained via Lincoln and Guba’s trustworthiness criteria—triangulation, member checking, thick description, and an audit trail. Four themes emerged: honoring persons as a whole, seeing things from the perspectives of others, intrinsic satisfaction from aesthetic care, and innovative, pleasant nursing interventions. Participants construed aesthetic nursing as a collaborative process that co creates meaningful patient experiences through therapeutic communication, needs assessment, and empathic engagement. These findings can inform healthcare organizations in developing policies and practices that foster aesthetic nursing. Future research should examine the longitudinal impact of aesthetic practice on patient outcomes, its relationship to nurse retention, and its adaptability across diverse clinical and cultural settings.

Abstract

Patients undergoing cesarean sections (CS) under spinal anesthesia often experience pain, anxiety, and peripheral vasoconstriction. This study, a randomized, blinded, controlled trial, compared progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and autogenic training (AOT) with standard treatment to alleviate the aforementioned symptoms. Sixty-six female patients who underwent CS aged 20-35 were randomized into three groups: PMR (n=22), AOT (n=24), or standard (n=20). Pain and anxiety were evaluated using standardized instruments: Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HARS) and Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Both groups indicated a statistically significant decrease in pain and anxiety as compared to the control group (p = 0.001). Both the PMR (Mean difference; pain, 2.54) and anxiety (17.37) improved significantly more than the AOT (pain, 1.23; anxiety, 11.68) group, while the control group minimally improved (pain, 0.32; anxiety, 2.27) over their pre-intervention scores. Statistical tests, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis, showed statistically significant differences between the three groups, p <0.034; p <0.001, 95% CI. Thus, the PMR is more effective than AOT or standard care. Therefore, PMR should be included in the postoperative care of nurse anesthetists in their pragmatic collaborative effort to support non-pharmacological symptom self-management in cesarean patients.

Abstract

Motivation plays a critical role in enabling palliative volunteers to provide effective psychosocial support to breast cancer patients. The negative psychological problems patients face often pose challenges for volunteers, as each patient requires a personal approach. Thus, good communication skills are essential, and training in effective communication can enhance volunteers' motivation to optimize psychosocial assistance. This study aimed to measure the effect of effective communication training on the motivation of palliative volunteers in supporting breast cancer patients in Batu City, Indonesia. This research employed a pre-experimental design with a pre-and post-test approach. A total of 45 palliative volunteers were recruited for this study. The training, which included role-playing exercises and group discussions, was conducted over a period of five weeks. Data were collected using the Volunteer Functions Inventory (VFI) questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS with the Paired-Samples t-Test. The results showed a significant increase in volunteer motivation after the training. Statistical tests confirmed a significant improvement in motivation scores after the training. This study highlights the positive impact of effective communication training on increasing volunteer motivation. It underscores the importance of nurses collaborating with volunteers to address the psychosocial needs of breast cancer patients through empathetic listening and effective communication.

Kata Kunci: ketidakpastian, strategi koping, kanker payudara, kemotherapi ABSTRACT Chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer sufferers is felt to be full of uncertainty, even though this is the best way to stop cancer. This study aims to determine the relationship between feelings of uncertainty and coping strategies when undergoing chemotherapy treatment. An observational analytical study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted on 141 breast cancer sufferers who underwent chemotherapy treatment for 3 months. Respondents were administered a self-administered questionnaire-based Survey of feelings of uncertainty and coping strategies. The variable dimension of feelings of ambiguity in the uncertainty variable is significantly related to coping strategies with r values: 0.381** and p; 0.000 < of α 0.001, and overall feelings of uncertainty are significantly associated with coping strategies in breast cancer sufferers undergoing chemotherapy treatment with a value of r; 0.379** and p: 0.000 < α 0.001. Exposure to feelings of uncertainty in life encourages efforts to use effective coping strategies so that the stronger the feeling of uncertainty in life that is felt, the more effective the use of coping strategies will be in undergoing chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer sufferers. Abstract

The validity and reliability test of the spiritual needs instrument for pregnant women has never been conducted, where spiritual needs are important to develop a coping mechanism for adaptation during pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to test the validity and reliability of the spiritual needs instrument for pregnant women. The validity test was conducted by distributing questionnaires to 35 pregnant women during August - September 2024. The spiritual needs instrument used is based on the Patients Spiritual Needs Assessment Scale using a 5-point Likert scale, namely very inappropriate (score 0), inappropriate, not sure, appropriate, and very appropriate (score 4). Pearson correlation test of 38 statements of Spiritual Instrument of Pregnant Women showed that there were 33 valid statements with r count ≥ 0.256 (r: -0.036-0.641) and 6 invalid statements with r count < 0.256 (r: - 0.036). The Cronbach Alpha value with the smallest Cronbach Alpha value if the item is deleted is 0.890 and the highest value is 0.908. This instrument can validate and measure spiritual needs accurately, so that midwives can provide midwifery care by utilizing spiritual potential to facilitate the spiritual adaptation of pregnant women which varies in each trimester

Abstract

Background: The global healthcare sector faces significant challenges in retaining skilled nurses due to various reasons leading to high turnover. These issues affect both public and private healthcare systems. Addressing these is crucial to ensure quality patient care and sustainable healthcare services, especially as the demand for skilled healthcare workers grows globally. This study examines the impact of job embeddedness and self-leadership on retention and turnover intentions among skilled nurses. Methods: This cross-sectional study involves 138 skilled nurses who met the criteria and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Results: Job embeddedness significantly enhances nurse self-leadership (β = 0.671, p < 0.001) and intention to stay (β = 0.658, p < 0.001), promoting commitment but negatively impacts turnover intention (β = -0.312, p = 0.004), suggesting its effectiveness in reducing turnover. Nurse self-leadership did not directly relate to the intention to stay. The moderating effect of length of service on the relationship between self-leadership and intention to stay underscores the importance of customized retention strategies. Conclusion: Job embeddedness is essential for retaining skilled nurses, and healthcare facilities should create a supportive environment that encourages connection and belonging. Retention strategies such as self-leadership training can enhance nurse commitment and reduce turnover. These findings offer valuable insights for effective nurse retention strategies in the competitive healthcare landscape. Keywords: intention to stay; job embeddedness; nurse self-leadership; turnover intention

Abstract

Nurse caring behavior is essential for the quality of healthcare services and patient well-being, yet several internal and external factors influence this behavior. This study analyzes the effects of work rewards, workload, motivation, and personality on nurses’ caring behavior. This cross-sectional study used a quantitative approach. Data were collected from 217 nurses in hospitals using structured questionnaires measuring variables of work rewards, workload, motivation, personality, and caring behavior. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The findings show that motivation has the most significant influence on caring behavior (β = 0.45, p < 0.01), followed by work rewards (β = 0.30, p < 0.01) and personality (β = 0.20, p < 0.01). Workload has a significant negative effect (β = -0.28, p < 0.01). An R-squared value of 0.65 indicates that these four variables can explain 65% of the variability in caring behavior. These findings support Gibson’s theory that environmental factors (work rewards, workload) and individual factors (motivation, personality) affect caring behavior. Motivation and work rewards drive caring behavior, while a high workload hinders it. Policies that enhance motivation and work rewards, along with balanced workload management, are necessary to support caring behavior in nurses Keywords: Caring behavior, Work rewards, Workload, Motivation, Personality.

Abstract

Evaluating a male nursing student's satisfaction with their educational major is an effective preventive measure to prevent them from dropping out or transferring to another major. However, there is limited research that focuses on identifying major satisfaction risks among male nursing students. This study aims to investigate the major satisfaction of male nursing students, specifically focusing on gender role stereotypes, patriarchal beliefs, and spirituality. A cross-sectional study was conducted with male nursing students (n = 113). The researchers used the Gender Role Stereotypes Inventory, the Patriarchal Belief Scale, the Brief RCOPE, and the Academic Major Satisfaction Scale. The adjusted coefficients beta (coef. β) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated using multiple linear regression, Pearson correlation and independent t-test were performed. This study demonstrated that gender role stereotypes (β = -0.05; -0.08 to -0.02), patriarchal beliefs (β = -0.05; -0.08 to -0.01), and spirituality (β = 0.11; 0.06 to 0.15) significantly correlated with major satisfaction. Spirituality was found to increase major satisfaction. Meanwhile, gender role stereotypes and patriarchal beliefs reduced the participants’ major satisfaction. Future interventions should incorporate strategies to modify detrimental gender norms and patriarchal beliefs and enhance the spiritual resources of male nursing students to improve major satisfaction.

Abstract

Hypertension remains a disease that poses a problem in all countries. WHO reports that there are still 1.28 billion hypertensive patients worldwide. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Islamic emotional resilience on blood pressure and spiritual well-being. This study used the RCT method involving 100 hypertensive patients, consisting of 50 respondents in the intervention group and 50 in the control group. The intervention group received an Islamic resilience model intervention for 3 weeks, while the control group continued taking antihypertensive medication. The study results showed a significant effect of the Islamic emotional resilience model on systolic blood pressure (p = 0.00), diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.00), and spiritual well-being (p = 0.00). In the control group, there was a significant difference in systolic blood pressure before and after (p = 0.00), diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.00), and spiritual well-being (p = 0.129). Islamic emotional resilience serves as an important complementary measure in the management of hypertensive patients
