Abstract

The prevalence of cancer in Indonesia has increased and is one of the biggest causes of death. Symptom clusters, a collection of symptoms in cancer patients that appear together and are related to one another, can affect the quality of life of cancer patients. This study aims to identify the relationship between symptom clusters and the quality of life of advanced cancer patients. This research used cross-sectional quantitative survey data from a cancer patient care unit at a referral hospital in West Java Province with a total of 140 respondents. Consecutive sampling was conducted for three months in stage III or IV cancer patients who were undergoing therapy. This study used descriptive analysis, factor analysis with the Principal Components Analysis (PCA) approach, and multiple linear regression analysis. Five symptom clusters were identified: the psychological cluster, the gastrointestinal cluster, the numbness cluster, the pain cluster, and the respiratory distress cluster. The results showed that symptom clusters influence the quality-of-life dimension. The symptom clusters’ coefficient of determination (R2) for the physical dimension was 0.231 (weak), the role dimension was 0.191 (very weak), the emotional dimension was 0.484 (moderate), the cognitive dimension was 0.011 (very weak), the social dimension was 0.420 (moderate), and the general-health dimension was 0.202 (weak).

Abstract

A nurse requires to acquire the proper ability to care for dying patients. In nursing education, palliative care is a complex action that tends to be challenging for nursing students. This is because there is an interaction among learning professionalism, emotional empathy, and other grieving feelings related to the palliative conditions of the patient. Palliative care interventions provide various challenges and learning for nursing students according to socio-cultural and demographic characteristics. This study aimed to determine nursing students’ experiences of caring for dying patients. This research was qualitative research with a phenomenological design. The data was obtained through in-depth interviews. Based on data saturation, 12 informants had experiences of caring for dying patients within a previous year, obtained through a purposive sampling method. The audio recordings were collected and analyzed using the Collaizi technique. This study identified four themes: 1) feelings of caring for dying patients; 2) caring for dying patients; 3) self-influence in caring for dying patients; and 4) barriers to caring for dying patients. Feelings of fear, tension, confusion, and anxiety emerged when first time caring for a dying patient. The results of this study are expected as a reference for further research related caring for dying patients.

Abstract

Nursing students must be competent in providing acute and critical care. This study investigated the perspectives of clinical instructors on these competencies in challenging nursing environments. Ten clinical instructors from the Regional Hospital of Semarang City, Central Java, Indonesia, participated in this study to observe students during their clinical practice in acute and critical care. Qualitative data was collected between May and December 2020. Face-to-face and virtual in-depth interviews lasted 30 to 40 minutes per informant. Data validity was ensured by member verification, which involved participants reviewing the recorded interviews. The nursing competency perspectives were divided into nine themes: (1) addressing biological, psychological, social, and spiritual needs; (2) involving families in patient care; (3) integrating attitudes, morals, and ethics; (4) developing communication skills; (5) working in multidisciplinary teams and complementary therapies; (6) effectively managing emergencies effectively; (7) recognizing and addressing spiritual aspects; (8) developing critical thinking and technology mastery; and (9) improving quality. This study’s findings serve as a valuable reference and guide for refining nursing student competencies in acute and critical care and creating assessment instruments.

Abstract

Tohu Danga are believed to be maternity assistants who care for women and infants before and after birth. This study aimed to explore the experiences of women in the Indragiri Hulu Regency who gave birth with the assistance of Tohu Danga. This study used a descriptive phenomenological approach with a total of 12 women. Participants were obtained by the snowball method until data saturation was reached. Data was collected through in-depth interviews. The Colaizzi analysis technique was used. The findings of this study generated six themes: (1) the significance of childbirth for women who give birth with Tohu Danga, (2) the context that determines the women's choice of birth attendant, (3) the cultural practice of Tohu Danga's birth aid, (4) the difficulty of the longer birth process, (5) the relationship between Tohu Danga birth care and traditional medicine, and (6) the positive and negative responses of women regarding the birth process with Tohu Danga. Nurses are forced to think critically when a woman's cultural practices can affect health and provide nursing care according to their patient’s cultural requirements.

Abstract

Students who gather and do not pay attention to health protocols can be evidence of their low compliance with implementing health protocols. University students, particularly those who come from health faculties, are considered change agents in implementing health protocols. Thus, it is necessary to examine their motivation and attitude toward implementing health protocols. This study aimed to determine the relationship between self-protective motivation and compliance with the nursing students' health protocol. The study was carried out with 253 undergraduate nursing students selected through cluster sampling with a cross-sectional design. The results showed that most of the students complied with the health protocols; some already had motivations related to self-protective motivation against COVID-19 and some already had a positive attitude towards the health protocol. There is a significant relationship between self-protection motivation and compliance with the nursing student health protocol (p-value = 0.000). However, nursing students must increase self-protective motivation and positive attitudes by increasing their understanding and confidence in the dangers of COVID-19 to encourage their obedience to health protocols. More studies need to be conducted to investigate the causes of student non-compliance in implementing health protocols, especially in the campus environment.

Abstract

Patients with cancer are at risk of death. There has been a lack of research on cancer-related training for health cadres. Meanwhile, they can potentially prevent cancer deaths because of their proximity to the community. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of cancer educational videos on cadres’ knowledge and self-efficacy in Yogyakarta. This was quasi-experimental research with a nonequivalent control group design. The purposive sampling technique was used to obtain data from 61 health cadre respondents. The inclusion criteria: older than 19 years old, a woman, and uses WhatsApp. The Cancer Knowledge and General Self-Efficacy Scale Questionnaires measurement instruments were used. Data analysis was conducted using an independent sample t-test, repeated ANOVA, and paired comparison post hoc. There was a significant difference in respondents' knowledge in the control and intervention groups (p<0.05). The intervention group’s knowledge increased, and there was a moderate increase in knowledge in the control group. There was no significant change in cadres’ self-efficacy in the intervention group (p>0.05), but there was a significant increase (p<0.05) in the control group. Therefore, cadres’ training using cancer educational videos is effective for increasing cadres' knowledge only and not self-efficacy.

Abstract

The prevalence rate of drug abusers in adolescents in Indonesia is relatively high. There is no valid and reliable instrument in the Indonesian language to measure stigma in drug users in adolescents. Therefore, this study aims to measure the validity and reliability of the self-stigma questionnaire in adolescent drug users. This cross-sectional study involved 59 teenage drug users who, at the time of the study, were in good health and could read and write to answer the questionnaire. Data were collected between March and September 2020 using Internalized Stigma Mental Illness (ISMI): Substance Abuse questionnaire. Pearson’s correlation coefficient, r, was used to measure the cross-validity value of the correlation between item scores and total statement scores. Meanwhile, researchers used Cronbach’s Alpha to assess the internal consistency of the questionnaire. Pearson’s r values for 29 statements showed that 1 statement was invalid. After eliminating the invalid statements, 28 statements with valid results at rcount ≥ 0.256 and Corrected item-total correlation >0.3 with a confidence level of 95% (rcount 0.323-0.642) and reliable Cronbach Alpha > 0.700 (Cronbach Alpha If Items Deleted: 0.888-0.895) with a 95% confidence level were used in the instrument. The ISMI is a valid and reliable version of drug abuse that can be used as an assessment and evaluation tool for adolescent drug abusers in clinical, rehabilitation, research, and community settings.

Abstract

Transcultural health care involves providing individualized and holistic health care to clients across cultures. Understanding and learning the differences in each culture will promote optimum care levels, especially for patients with cancer. This study describes nurses' expression of transcultural care to patients with cancer. This is a descriptive phenomenological study of nurses' expression in transcultural care to patients with cancer. A total of 11 participants were selected by using purposive sampling. Data was gathered from in-depth interviews among nurses who took care of patients with cancer via an online platform. Data analysis used Colaizzi's thematic analysis. The study’s trustworthiness was established by its credibility, dependability, confirmability, and transferability. Four major themes were generated in this study: (1) cultural congruent care, (2) cultural and communication competency, (3) integrity as a vital aspect of respect and consideration of other cultures, and (4) challenges nurses face when a caring for patients with cancer and their transcultural and patient-driven solutions. Caring is about giving patients hope, love, and services based on their cultural sensitivity. Connecting and interacting effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds is essential in today's globalized society.
