Abstract

This study aims to develop a test for reading report text based on the Two-Tier Multiple Choices test for Junior High school students in SMP Negeri 3 Dooksanggul. The Two-Tier Multiple Choices Test was developed by using Research and Development (R&D) method proposed by Borg and Gall (2007), which has been modified by Sugyono (2016). It consists of six steps: gathering data and information, analyzing data, developing material, validating by experts, revising the product, and developing the final product. The test instrument developed was a twolevel multiple choice test consisting of multiple-choice questions and a choice of reasons totaling 30 questions. The validator assessment sheet consists of three aspects, namely material, construction, and language, with 12 assessment indicators and is analyzed using the Content Validity Index (CVI). The first draft was revised based on validation results and experts' comments to develop a better test instrument. The developed reading test validated the Content Validity Index (CVI) score was 1.00. It concluded that the instrument test was categorized as "Very Good."

Abstract

The aims of the research are to describe the students’ problems in writing and to describe the effective of the implementation of teaching writing skills through the Scratch program. This study was designed descriptive qualitative. The data in this study were obtained through questionnaire and interview. The subjects of the study were an English teacher and twenty eighth-grade students of SMP Swasta Al-Hikmah Medan. The students' problems are lack of vocabulary in writing, lack of confidence in creating ideas, lack of interest in learning English, and students' perceptions of ineffective strategies. According to the teacher scratch program is effective to use in teaching writing skills. Based on the results, the use of the Scratch program in teaching writing skills deserves to be used as an interesting and creative learning media.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to establish macromedia Flash as an English teaching medium for tenth grade students at SMA Azizi Medan.This research was carried out in six stages using Research and Development (R&D) design: obtaining data and information, analyzing data, designing media, validating by experts, amending, and delivering the final result.The research focused on SMA Azizi Medan's grade X.The information was acquired by interviewing an English teacher and sending a questionnaire to 30 students to determine their needs.The results of the interview and questionnaire revealed that students require a learning medium for teaching speaking that will assist them in comprehending the narrative text.Experts have supported macromedia flash as a learning media. The average score is 4.55. It means the developed learning media by using macromedia flash is relevant or appropriate and categorized as a very good learning media for students at SMA Azizi Medan.

Abstract

Feedback is one of the most important factors that contribute to students’ success in the learning process. At the same time, teacher feedback is a fascinating topic to discuss. It is important to understand the different types of feedback and why the teacher employed them. This study was conducted to learn about the different types of teacher feedback given by the English teacher of the eighth grade at SMPN 27 MEDAN during the academic year 2022/2023 in speaking activities, as well as the reasons why the teacher gives feedback the way she does. The research design is a descriptive qualitative study based on Stone and Nielsen’s opinions. After analysis, it is clear that the types of teacher feedback stated by the teacher are affective feedback and informative feedback, with informative feedback dominating. Furthermore, the teacher’s motivation for creating them is to improve communication with students and to build a communicative class.

Abstract

The research dealt with speech function used by male and female teachers in classroom interaction at SMA Negeri 1 Kisaran. The aims of the study were: (1) to identify the types of speech function used by the male and female teachers in classroom interaction (2) to analyze the way how the speech function used by the male and female teachers. This study used descriptive qualitative design. The participants of the study were one male English teacher and one female English teacher. The data were collected by following instruments: observation and video recording. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) the types of speech functions used by male teacher are statement (48.05% or 259 clauses), questions (19.9% or 107 clauses), offer (1.7% or 9 clauses), and command (12.6% or 68 clauses). Meanwhile, the types of speech functions used by female teacher are statement (28.6%% or 80 clauses), questions (21.4% or 107 clauses), offer (4.01% or 15 clauses), and command (24.6% or 90 clauses). (2) For the realization of speech functions by male and female teachers there are two ways that have been found in realization structure of male and female teachers speech functions named typical clause mood and non- typical clause mood. In typical clause mood, there were found four ways, statement that realized by declarative mood, question realized by interrogative mood, command realized by imperative mood, and initiating minor that realized by minor. Besides that, in non - typical clause mood found there are three ways in realization of mood by male and female teachers, named statement that realized by tagged declarative, offer that realized by declarative, and command that realized by modulated declarative.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the code-mixing used by the English teachers and the reasons for using it in the teaching and learning process at MTsN Batu Bara. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research are teachers’ utterances and teachers’ reasons for using code-mixing. They were taken from the three English teachers at MTsN Batu Bara using observation and interview sheets during the teaching and learning process. The result showed three types of code-mixing used by the English teachers in the teaching and learning process. Those are Intra sentential code-mixing, Intra lexical code-mixing, and Involving change of pronunciation. From the teachers’ utterances, Intra sentential code-mixing was dominantly used in the teaching process with an average percentage of 82.5%, which occurs within word boundary. Then Intra lexical code-mixing has 11.6%, and Involving change of pronunciation has 6.4%. After doing the interview, it can be known that the teachers’ reasons for code-mixing used in the teaching and learning process are the situation of the students’ ability in learning English and bilingualism as a teachers’ ability to communicate in two languages.

Abstract

This research dealt with teachers' roles used by English teachers in English classroom management. This study aimed to investigate the types of teachers' roles were used by the English teachers and to analyze the reasons why teachers applied their roles in the way they did in English Classroom management at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 4 Tanjungpinang. A descriptive qualitative design was used in this study. The data in this study were collected by using field notes, video recording, and unstructured interviews with teachers. The data were analyzed by data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The findings of this study showed that the two teachers who taught in the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 4 Tanjungpinang applied these eight roles to manage the classroom during teaching and learning. But there are differences between the roles performed by them when the teaching and learning process takes place in the classroom. The first teacher (W) applied the seven teacher’ roles as controller, organizer, assessor, participant, resource person, tutor, and observer. The second teacher (R) applied seven teacher’ roles as controller, organizer, assessor, and prompter, resource person, tutor, and observer. The reason why the both of English teachers in the eighth grade at SMP Negeri 4 Tanjungpinang applied their roles as they did. Because of 1) teachers’ formative, 2) teachers’ training experience, and 3) teachers’ personal attributes.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate teacher’s strategies in teaching writing recount text at SMP GAJAH MADA MEDAN and to discover the reasons on why teacher implemented that teaching strategies the way he did in an online class. The method of this research was qualitative research. The technique of data collection in this research were observation and interview. The research finding showed that the teacher applied two strategies in teahing writing namely Shared Writing Strategy and Guided Wring Strategy. According to the teacher, the reasons for using Shared Writing Strategy and Guided Writing Strategy are these strategies are suitable and effective to overcome students difficulties in writing especially in an online class that more complicated than face to face learning. Both of these strategies also made the students easily to understand the lesson and become more independent to write their own recount text.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to developed animation video as media in teaching writing narrative text for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Pakam. Due to the result in the form of product, this study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (2003) theory with some modifications. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Pakam. In conducting this study, the procedured were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis designing the first draft of media, revising the media and producing the final product as the animation video. The instruments of collecting the data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaires to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaires result prove that the students need animation video as a media in teaching writing which can help the students to understand about the narrative text. The new animation video consists of some pictures, characters and explanations that can be used in teaching writing narrative text. The media had been validated by two validators. The first validator gave 89.6% and the second validator gave 95.2% that it could be inferred that the developed media was appropriate to be used for students. The result of the study was the animation video that the teacher can use as the teaching media of narrative text for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Pakam.
