Abstract

This study were aimed to find out the types of teachers’ written feedback in writing which given by the teachers for grade 10, to find out the reason why teacher used those types of written feedbacks on students’ writing and also to find out the students’ response to the teacher’s written feedbacks on students’ writing of grade 10 students in SMA YAPIM Taruna Sei Rotan. This research used descriptive qualitative method and the data were collected through documentation and interview. The data collected were analyzed qualitatively. The findings found that there were two types of feedbacks namely, direct written feedback and indirect written feedback. There were 59 direct feedbacks (52%) out of 114 total feedbacks. Meanwhile, indirect feedback with 55 un-coded direct feedbacks (48%) and in this case, teacher did not use coded indirect feedback because the teacher did not understand about the codes. The reason why teacher used those kinds of written feedback on students’ writing was because it could make the students have more vocabularies. In conclusion, teacher’s written feedbacks were important to made students aware of making mistake on their writing and the students knew about their mistake easily and their writing will be better because they learn from the mistakes. In this case, most of the students felt happy when their teacher gave a correction on their writing. The students said that direct feedback was more effective than indirect feedback because they felt confuse about what the correct word is. By using the direct feedback, the students can have more vocabularies on their next writing. The findings suggested that English teachers was expected to provide a clear description of feedback on writing, especially how students perceive and interpret the feedback given.Key words: Feedback, Teacher’s Written Feedback, Students’ Writing

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the use of translation and investigating the reasons of using translation in teaching reading analytical exposition text grade eleven at MAN Peanornor. This study was qualitatively conducted that taken 3 English teachers of MAN Peanornor. The data were collected by using an interview and observing the whole process of teaching reading analytical exposition text. The findings of this study showed that there were 51 times of using translation found during three processes that they were conveying and checking meaning of words or sentences, explaining grammar and classroom management. It was also found that the use of translation was used in the scientific approach activity that experimenting and associating activity were the dominant used rather than observing, questioning and communicating activity in teaching. The reasons of using translation in teaching reading analytical exposition text were facilitating communication, teacher-student relationship and the L2 learning. The findings of this study revealed that translation contributed to the study of foreign language teaching especially teaching reading skill. Keywords : translation, teaching and analytical exposition text.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing features of teacher talk in teaching speaking. The subject of this study were English Teacher and 40 students at first grade of SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The data were collected through the following: observation, and audio recording. In this research, the FLINT is used to identify the categories of teacher talk occur during the learning process. Moreover, this study is conducted in the form of descriptive qualitative research where the researcher as the non-participant observer on the classroom. From the data that has been taken, it is obtained that the categories of teacher talk used by the teacher in teaching speaking in the first grader of SMA Negeri 20 Medan are deals with feeling, praises or encourages, jokes, uses ideas of students, repeats students response verbatim, ask questions, gives information, corrects without rejection, give direction, criticizes student behavior, and Criticize student response. The finding of the study showed that there are eleven features of teacher talk occur in English classroom interaction and the dominant feature of teacher talk was ask questions (40.2%). The feature of teacher talk which is dominantly used by the teacher help students more active in the class because the teacher gave the oppurtunity to the learners to deliver their ideas, and try their ability in speaking skill. Keywords : Features of Teacher Talk, Foreign Language Interaction, Learning Process

Abstract

This study was aimed to describe the English Teaching Methods in writing descriptive text and the problems faced by the teacher. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of this research was an English teacher of SMK NEGERI 1 Pulau Rakyat. The techniques of collecting data were by observing the process of teaching writing comprehension of descriptive text at X Grade students and interviewing the English teacher. The techniques of collecting data were observation and interview. This study found that the teacher at SMK NEGERI 1 Pulau Rakyat used the method in teaching writing descriptive text. The English teacher used the lecture method and discussion method to teach in the descriptive text and the students get difficulties in comprehending the material. The application lecture method and discussion method is not appropriate with scientific approach of 2013 Curriculum. The result and response from the students to the teacher’s method are still not effective. The teacher should not apply the methods in written but also in spoken. And the problems faced by the teacher were the first is about the lack of students’ vocabularies, and the second is about the students’ participations when work in group. This study also found that the teacher’s methods not integrated with the scientific approach of 2013 Curriculum. The implementation of methods in teaching writing  should can make teaching learning process more interesting and help the students’ understanding and skill of writing comprehension better.Key words: Teaching Method, Writing, Descriptive Text.

Abstract

This study concerns on how reading text are developed for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design. It was started from collecting the data, analyzing data, designing course grid, designing new reading material by using Scientific Approach, validating by experts, and revising for final product. The new reading material contained of five stages namely; observing, questioning, exploring, associating, and communicating. The source of data of this study was the grade X students of Computer Engineering and Networking Program at SMKS Taman Siswa Medan consisting 24 students. Instrument of collecting data were observation, questionnaire, and interview. After analyzing data, the researcher got the students’ need in learning English in term of vocation that they have. The interview and questionnaire result proved that the students need English reading materials which contain English for Computer Engineering and Networking program. The materials which were developed were focused on descriptive text. The product had been validated by the experts. The average scores are 3,4 both from English teacher and English lecturer. It means the developing materials categorized as relevant for students of Computer Engineering and Networking program grade X.Key words: Research and Development (R&D), Scientific Approach, Reading, Material, vocational school, Computer Engineering and Networking program

Abstract

This study deals with the designing of English Speaking Materials By Using Digital Storytelling Project For The Eleventh Grade Students of Senior High School.  The objectives of this study are: (1) to know the English speaking materials needed by grade eleventh students of senior high school, (2) to design appropriate English speaking materials by using digital storytelling project for the eleventh grade students of senior high school. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 3 Medan. The research procedures of this study is Research and Development (R&D) through three phases : 1) evaluation and need analysis, 2) course design, and 3) materials validation. The instruments used were questionnaire, interview and documentation sheet. The data from evaluation and need analysis were analyzed by using descriptive technique and the data from expert judgement results were using quantitative data analysis. The result of this study is a course book of speaking materials by using digital storytelling project which consist of title, objective, introduction, observing, practices and reflection. The materials consist of three units, they are What Is Your Opinion, How May I Help You? and You Are Loved. Based on the experts’ judgement result, the score was 3.97 which belongs to good category. Keywords: Digital Storytelling Project, Speaking Materials.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop Video Blog as Teaching Media for Students of Multimedia Programme. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D).Instruments for collecting data were syllabus, questionnaire and interview. The data was gathered by administering interview to the teacher and distributing questionnaires to the students. The result of this study was developed Video Blog   which contained explanation, students’ activities and the example of report text in spoken.The average scores of media’s assesment were 4.04 from English teacher and 4.56 from English lecturer. It means the developed Video Blog as Teaching Media were categorized as very good or very appropriate for students of Multimedia Programme.  Key words: Report text, Research and Development (R&D), Report Text

Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop Word Walls as media for teaching writing descriptive text at the seventh grade students of MTs S Nurul Hakim Tembung. The researcher used Research and Development (R & D) method through six steps: gathering data and information, need analysis, media design, validating to experts, revising, and final product. The subjects of this research were 26 students from VII A at MTs S Nurul Hakim Tembung. The instrument of collecting data was using questionnaires and interviewing the teacher. The data were analyzed by descriptive text technique. The product was assessed from two experts. The average scores of the product assessment were 90 from English teacher, and 92 from English lecturer. The total average scores from two experts were 91 which was in very good quality. It means that the developed product/Word Walls is eligible to be used for teaching writing descriptive text for the seventh grades students at MTs S Nurul Hakim Tembung.  Keywords: Research and Development (R & D), writing descriptive text, word walls.

Abstract

This research was aimed to develop English speaking materials for the students of Accounting program at SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang especially the tenth grade. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through four phases; Evaluation and Need Analysis, Material Development, Material Validation and Revision and Final Product. It was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang. The date were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 10 students to get the student’s needs. The result of questionnaire showed that the relevance of existing Speaking material with Accounting major just 35 % (less relevant) and 90 % of  the students need the relevance English speaking material with their major and related to work situation. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English Speaking materials which contain the appropriate knowledge or topic with the syllabus, student’s level and major. The material developed into 3 units based on the basic competence on syllabus; Congratulating and Complimenting, Expressing Intention, and Giving Announcement. The product of English speaking material validated by two experts, lecturer and English teacher. The result of experts’ judgment is 89.5 and it belongs to good category. The experts’ validation shows that the materials are appropriate and recommended to be used for students of Accounting program especially in SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang.Keywords: Research and Development(R & D), English Speaking materials, Accounting Program
