This study aim to design English speaking materials needed for students of class XI SMA N 1 Kerajaan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this study were students of class XI consisting of 20 students. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 20 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result of the needs analysis showed that the students needed materials for speaking which were attractive and interesting and based on their social life context. Thus, the learning materials were developed into 6 of speaking material. By two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The average scores are 4,7 or 95% from English Lecturer and 4,5 or 90% from English Teacher. It means the developing materials categorized as relevant, thus, it can be concluded that contextual teaching and learning speaking materials had been appropriated for grade XI students of Senior High School.Key words: Research and Development (R & D), Speaking materials, Contextual Teaching and Learning

The objectives of this study were: (1) to develop reading material for tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Medan, (2) to develop students’ vocabulary by playing puzzles as the task. This study was conducted by Research and Development (R&D). The research procedures were adapted from Borg and Gall. This research were designed through six phases; 1) gathering data and information, 2) analyzing the data, 3) designing materials, 4) validating materials, 5) revising, and 6) final product. The data of this research were taken from existing materials, syllabus, teacher’s interview and students’ questioners. The result of this study showed that the students’ existing material were not relevant to electrical engineering program. The vocabulary that students’ get from the existing materials was less. The designing material was validated by English teacher and English lecturer. The product of this study is a set of reading material entitled “electricity holic” for students in SMK Negeri 2 Medan. The reading materials consist of three genres; descriptive, narrative and recount. Key words: Reading material, Research and Development (R&D), SMK Negeri 2 Medan, Puzzle, Vocabulary.

The thesis deals with the dominant category used by teacher and the students during English classroom interaction, and the percentage of teacher’s talk and students’ talk during English classroom interaction using Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories System (FIACS). Moreover, this study used descriptive qualitative design .The data of this study were utterances between English teacher and students during English classroom in XI-2 IPA of SMA Negeri 11 Medan.The instruments for data collection were observation tally sheet and video recording. The result showed all of the categories used in the teaching and learning process. It found from the percentage of all categories , the dominant category used by the teacher was Giving Direction (40.41% ). In the other hand the dominant category used by students was Student Talk-Response (57.60%). In addition, the percentage of Teacher Talk was 59.76%, and the percentage of Student Talk was 36.72% during classroom interaction in English lessons .It showed, the teacher more active and dominant talking than the students during verbal classroom interaction.Key words: Verbal Classroom Interaction, Teacher Talk, Student Talk, Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories System

This research aims at investigating the effect of rich media guided writing strategy on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The Population of this research was the tenth (X) grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Dolok Merawan. There were two classes as the sample. The first class (X MIA 1), the experimental group consisted of 20 students, and the second class (X IS 1), the control group consisted of 20 students. The experimental group was taught by using rich media-guided writing strategy while control group was taught by using pen and paper-guided writing strategy. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the score of students in the experimental group by using rich media guided writing strategy was higher than the score of students in the control group by using pen and paper guided writing strategy, at the level of significance (α) 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 38, the t-observed was 2,818 while the t-table was 2,024. Therefore, the application of rich media guided writing strategy significantly affected the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. The aims of this study are to find out the types of collocation used in the English textbook for grade X students in senior high school, to find out the most dominant used of collocation, and to describe how the collocations applied in the 3 genre texts contained in the textbook. The data of this study were the collocations used in 3 genre texts, descriptive, recount, and narrative of an English textbook for tenth grade students in senior high school. After analysing the data, the researcher found 6 types of collocations used in the 3 genre text. The result showed that the textbook use 6 types of collocations (adjective + noun, verb + noun, noun + noun, verb + preposition, verb + adverb, adverb + adjective), and the most dominant collocation used was the adjective + noun type of collocation. The use of collocation in the narrative text was the biggest percentage of (38%), followed by the recount text of (35%) and the last was the descriptive text of (27%).Keywords: Collocation, Types of collocations, Genre Text, English Textbook.

This study was about male and female teacher’s initiation in English classroom interaction. The aims of this study were (1) to find out the types of male and female teacher’s initiations used in English classroom interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model, (2) to find out the reason why male and female teacher used the types of initiation. The design of the research used qualitative research. To answer the problems of the study, the data were collected in three ways by observing, video recording and interviewing. The data were analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard theory (1975). The result of this study were the following, (1) there were nine types of initiation used by male and female teacher in English classroom interaction, namely, boundary, teacher inform, teacher direct, teacher elicit, check, re-initiation (i), re-initiation (ii), listing and repeat. (2) the reasons in use of types initiation by male and female teacher. Those were affected by male and female teacher belief which belongs to the presage category and context category which refers to the class in which the teaching process takes place. They had different ways when doing initiation in English classroom interaction, which is they had their own ways in doing interaction with the students. Even though they had different ways but their aim just making the students comprehended and could knew what the teachers said.Keywords: Initiation, Gender, Classroom Interaction

The objective of this study was to develop English learning media based on students’ needs. This research was conducted in SMP N 37 Medan for students in grade VII which consists of 30 students. This study followed the steps of research and development proposed by Borg and Gall (1983), which are 1) need analysis; 2) planning (develop preliminary form of product); 3) Collecting data; 4) designing media; 4) media evaluation; 5) revising (designing final product). It was found that 96.66% students agreed that the existing an interactive learning medium currently used by the students of Junior High School. The more relevant media were developed based on student needs, which can provide opportunities for students to participate in the classroom. The learning media were developed into 4 media based on 4 units of speaking materials. Then the learning media were validated by two experts. The average score of the validation was 90. It showed that the developed learning media were very good, relevant and feasible.Keywords: English learning media, speaking, visual art media.

The objectives of the study were to find out the discourse markers naturally that used by students in the essay writing, the most frequent inappropriateness in terms of the use of discourse markers, and to describe the reasons why they used the discourse markers in the way they do. The study was conducted by applying a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of the research were the students of senior high school at SMA Budisatrya Medan. The data were the students’ writing that were analyzed by using Fraser Taxonomy (1999). It was fond that the students used 7 out 8 types of discourse markers. Furthermore, the data were also analyzed by using Kao & Chen Taxonomy (2011). It was also fond that the students used 3 out 6 types of misuse patterns of discourse markers. There were seven reasons the students used discourse markers: Limitation of knowledge, lack of ability in writing, lack of interest against english, lack of interest against writing, reading resources, teachers’ explanation and internet resources. The objective of this study is to develop suitable procedure text materials for reading skill, for Beauty program students. It was found that procedure text materials provided in the students’ textbook were not suitable to the needs and interests of Beauty program students. This research was conducted based on educational research and development (R&D) through six steps, namely: gathering data, analyzing data, developing procedure text materials, validating procedure text materials, revising procedure text materials and final product. There are some instruments that were applied in this research namely questionnaire and interview .The subject of this study was XI Grade of Beauty program. Based on the needs analysis conducted there were 4 procedure texts related to Beauty program developed. The researcher developed the text by selecting and adapting relevant procedure texts related to Beauty program from internet and book as the sources. Then, the selected texts were adapted based on the principles of materials development in order to present well organized suitable procedure text materials. These developed procedure text materials had been validated by two experts and the average score gotten is 4.07. It is categorized “Good” since the mean is within the interval 3.40 < ≤ 4.19. It means that the developed procedure text materials for reading skill are suitable for the eleventh grade students of Beauty program. This study deals with developing the writing paragraph through quickwriting for junior high school at smp swasta pahlawan nasional. The objectives of this study were to find out to improve the students’ ability in writing paragraph of grade VIII students by using quickwriting strategy. Data data of the research was taken from the secondary grade of Junior High School Students at SMP Swasta Pahlawan Nasional Medan, which is taken from one class, contain 33 student. The data in this research collected by using interview and questionnaire. The interview and questionnaire will be given to collect the students’ need, problem and interesting in learning English, particularly in writing and using quick writing in teaching and learning. In the teaching-learning process the teacher should prepare before conducting the lesson. The first is classroom procedures in teaching-learning process. Classroom procedures used by English teacher are opening, quickwriting, main activities (exploration-elaboration-confirmation), closing. There are some problems faced in the teaching-learning process. The problems faced are problem in developing idea, organizing idea, difficulties in vocabulary, tenses, and grammar, different capability of the students, and limited time. The consequently, the teacher should give solutions to cope the problems faced in teaching-learning process. So, the teacher should be creative to minimize the problem faced in teaching-learning process in order to make the students enjoy with the materials and develop student’s ability.
