Abstract

This study aimed (1) To investigate the types of questions used in teaching reading comprehension in English classroom interaction, (2) To analyze how the teachers use the questions in teaching reading comprehension in English classroom interaction, (3) To investigate the reasons why the teachers use the questions the way they do. A descriptive qualitative study was used in this study. The source of the data was two English teachers of class XI in SMA Negeri 1 Sumbul. The data were collected by using video recording and unstructured interview with teachers. The data were the sentences that consist of teachers’ questions in teaching reading comprehension and the result of the teachers’ interview. The data were analyzed by data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings of the result were that: (1) There were five types of questions used by teachers namely literal questions (9.86%), reorganization or reinterpretation questions 19 (26.76%), inference questions 9 (12.68%), evaluation questions 4 (5.63%) and personal response questions 5 (7.04%). It also found that there were 27 (38.03%) other types of questions used by the two teachers, namely questions related to knowledge, vocabulary and students' experience, (2) The teachers use the different way in giving the questions. KP used wait time, repetition, paraphrasing, simplification and probing, while RS only use wait time, repetition, paraphrasing and simplification in giving questions when teaching reading comprehension, (3) The reasons that affect the teachers do the way they do consist of teachers' experience, teachers' formative and teachers' personal attributes.

Abstract

The study aimed to develop learning media in Speaking Descriptive Text forGrade VII of Junior High School Students. This study used Research andDevelopment (R&D) design through six stages; gathering information and data,analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and finalproduct. The subject of the study was Grade VII of MTs Al-Washliyah Kolam.The instruments of data collection were gathered by administring interview anddistributing questionnaire. The study was conducted by interviewing the Englishteacher and distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs.The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students need Englishlearning media which can motivate the students to understand about speakingdescriptive text. The product had been validated by the experts namely Englishlecturer and English teacher. The product result was Flashcard which ismodifying to playing game based on the rules game. The result of experts’validation showed that the media was an appropriate media to be used onspeaking descriptive text by getting the average percentage 95% categorizedexcellent.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to know how effective the use of Collaborative Writing in teaching writing descriptive texts is. So this final project mainly aims at determining the effectiveness of using Collaborative Writing in teaching writing descriptive texts. This study was conducted under the consideration that the students often get difficulties in describing something. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the writer designed an action research. The population of this study was the second grade students of SMP Negeri 29 Medan. The number of the subjects of this study was 37 students. During the research, the students becoming the subjects were taught by using Collaborative Writing in teaching writing descriptive texts. There were two cycles in this action research. Each cycle consisted of four phases. Before giving treatments in those two cycles, the students were given pre-test. After each treatment in each cycle, the students were tested. And the last, they were given post-test and questionnaire. The main purpose of conducting it was to find out the validity and the reliability of the test as instrument. The result of this research showed that the students’ ability in writing descriptive texts improved after a series of treatments given in the cycles. It can be seen by comparing the means of their tests. The mean score for the pre-test was 53.92, the mean score for test 1 was 70.27, while the mean score for the post-test was 80.08. It is clear that after applying Collaborative Writing in each treatment, the mean of each test improves and gets better. The use of Collaborative Writing technique is one of the ways to make students interest in studying English especially writing descriptive text. Abstract

The aims of this study is to analyze picture series trigger memory retrieval of a story as represented in writing narration. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The source of this data are the students of SMA Swasta Kartika Medan which consists of 18 students. To collect the data, elicitation technique was used in this study. To elicit the students writing, picture series of different completeness will be presented to the students. There are three concurrent flows of action to analyze the data, they are data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/ verification. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the way how picture series trigger memory retrieval is that by suiting the number of clues presented to the background knowledge of the writers. The more the background knowledge of the writers have, the less clues they need to trigger memory retrieval. On the other hand, the less the background knowledge of the writers have, the more clues they need to trigger memory retrieval. Key words : Picture series, Triggering, Memory Retrieval, Writing Narration.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out the effect of Group Investigation method on students’ writing achievement on narrative text. The study was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this study was eight classes of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kotapinang. The samples were taken by using clustering technique and two of the eight classes which was consisted of 60 students used as the samples, one class as experimental group and the other class as control group. In the treatment, the experimental group was taught by using Group Investigation method, the control group was taught without using Group Investigation method. Writing narrative text test was used as the instrument for collecting the data. Therefore, after analyzing the data, it was found that the value of  was 3.02 with the degree of freedom (df) = 58 at that level of significance (α=0.05) = 2.00. It means that  was considerably higher than  (3.02 > 2.00). The result of this study shows Group Investigation method has a significant effect on students’ achievement in writing report text. Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop the suitable and appropriate procedure text materials for reading skill, for Chemical Analysis program students. It was found that procedure text materials provided in the students’ textbook were not suitable and appropriate to the needs and interests of Chemical Analysis program students. This study is categorized into research and development (R&D). This study was conducted at SMK Negeri 3 Medan. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of Chemical Analysis program. The steps of this research were gathering information and data, analyzing data, developing materials, validating new materials by expert, revising materials and the final products. The result of the data were in the form of quantitative data obtained using questionnaire and qualitative in the open-ended questions. The developed reading material consisted of a unit. The texts were developed into three new suitable procedure text materials and about daily activity. Regarding understanding the generic structure of each text, comprehending text, completing sentences, filling in the blanks, answering question, arranging random sentences, choosing a title, matching the headings, vocabulary information, and true or false were appropriate. The developed reading materials were validated based on the suggestions of the teacher and the lecturer that selected as the experts. The average score of validation were 4, 45. It showed that the developed procedure materials were very good, suitable, appropriate and relevant with the students’ needs and interests.

Abstract

This was a research and development (R&D) study which aimed to evaluate the English summative test items based on revised Bloom’s taxonomy for grade VIII. This study focused on the developing the English summative test items according to the cognitive level of revised Bloom’s taxonomy for grade VIII at SMP Negeri 3 Tebing Tinggi. The data consist of the existing English summative test items which were directly collected from the English teacher due to analyze the proportion of cognitive level according to revised Bloom’s taxonomy. Based on the data analysis, the existing English summative test had not fulfilled the proportion of cognitive level according to revised Bloom’s taxonomy regulated by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The inappropriate English summative test items were then developed according to the proportion demand and suitability to the syllabus and indicators. The results of the study are 30 developed English summative test items which had been validated by the experts and tested to 20 students due to get the reliability scores. Keywords: English summative test, revised Bloom’s taxonomy, R&D research

Abstract

This study investigates the types of politeness strategy used by the teachers in classrooms interaction and how the politeness strategies were realized in classrooms interaction. The subjects in this study were teachers who used politeness strategies. This study used a descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected using the following instruments: observation, recording, field notes and interviews. The results of this study reveal that: (1) There are four politeness strategies found during the teaching and learning process used by English teachers, namely: Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness and Off Record. (2) The dominant type used by English teachers at SMA YPK Medan is the Bald on Record Strategy, specifically Bald on Record was used 11 times by 2 English teachers at SMA YPK Medan and for reasons why the politeness strategy is used by the teacher English at SMA YPK Medan during the teaching and learning process illustrates that politeness is the best sentence, soft and polite. And it is very important to apply in the classroom because it will make it easier for teachers to teach students and make them respect each other. Furthermore, this strategy was successfully applied in the classroom during the learning process to get to know the character of students well.

Abstract

This study concerns on how reading text are developed for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design. It was started from collecting the data, analyzing data, designing course grid, designing new reading material by using Scientific Approach, validating by experts, and revising for final product. The new reading material contained of five stages namely; observing, questioning, exploring, associating, and communicating. The source of data of this study was the grade X students of Computer Engineering and Networking Program at SMKS Taman Siswa Medan consisting 24 students. Instrument of collecting data were observation, questionnaire, and interview. After analyzing data, the researcher got the students’ need in learning English in term of vocation that they have. The interview and questionnaire result proved that the students need English reading materials which contain English for Computer Engineering and Networking program. The materials which were developed were focused on descriptive text. The product had been validated by the experts. The average scores are 3,4 both from English teacher and English lecturer. Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis focuses on the process of improving students’ reading comprehension through Directed Reading Thinking Activity. The objective was to discover the significant improvement of students’ reading comprehension if the students were taught by using Directed Reading Thinking Activity. The subjects of the study were Grade XI- IA 1 students State Senior High School ( Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri: SMAN 2 Kisaran). There were thirty four students, consisting of eighteen girls and sixteen boys. They were taught with Directed Reading Thinking Activity. The instruments for data collection were reading assessment, diary notes, interview and observation. The techniques of data analysis applied were quantitative and qualitative. In analyzing the data, the students were given three reading assesments namely, Assessment I, Assessment II, and Assessment III. The mean of the students’ score for the first reading assessment as Assessment I was 50.09, the second reading assessment to the third was 69.68%, and the third reading assessment as Assessment III was 80. 32. The total percentage of the improvement from the first reading assessment to the third was 75.53%. The conclusion is that the application of Directed Reading Thinking Activity can improve students’ reading comprehension. The qualitative data shows that the students were enthusiastic and interested in reading comprehension. It is suggested that teachers should apply Directed Reading Thinking Activity as one of the strategies in improving students’ reading comprehension.   Key Words: Reading Comprehension, Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA)
