Abstract

The objectives of this study were to investigate the types of teacher’s feedback in writing which given by the teachers and to find out the reason why teacher used those types of feedback on students’ writing analytical exposition text at grade eleven students’ of SMK Negeri 4 Medan. This research used descriptive qualitative method and the data were collected through documentation and interview. The framework undertaken is proposed by Ellis and the interview question was adapted from Thorsteinsen. The data was analyzed in four steps: 1). Data Collection, 2) Data Reduction, 3). Data display, 4). Conclusion and Drawing verification. The findings found that there were 5 kinds of feedback, namely direct written feedback, indirect written feedback, focus and unfocused feedback, and reformulation. The most dominant of teacher’s feedback especially on written used in students’ analytical exposition text was direct feedback. It was 56 data or 66%. Based on the analysis interview, the reason why teacher used those types of feedback on students’ writing was because it could make the students’ have more vocabularies and the students did not think more about what was the correct word. In conclusion, teacher’s feedbacks are important to make student aware of making mistake on their writing task. The finding suggested that the English teacher should give the written feedback to students’ writing task to enable them improve the writing skill. Keywords: Teacher’s Feedback, Students’ Analytical Exposition Text, Writing

Abstract

This study attempts to discover the effect of applying Small Group Work Strategy on students’ achievement in writing procedure text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was the nineth (IX) grade students of SMP N 1 Padang Bolak Julu which consists of 3 parallel classes with the total number of students is 90. The samples of this research were taken by random sampling through lottery technique. The result was class IX1 consisted of 30 students became the experimental group and class IX3 consisted of 30 students became the control group. The experimental group was taught by Small Group Work Strategy while the control group was taught by using individual work strategy. The instrument was used to collect the data was writing procedure text. After the data were analyzed, it was found that the value of t-observed was 3.37 with the degree of freedom (df) = 58 at the level significance 0.05. it means that t-observed was higher than t-table (3.37 > 2.00. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is reected and the hypothesis alternative (Ha) is accepted.Key words : Small Group Work Strategy, Writing Procedure Text.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to develop English speaking materials of descriptive text for Tenth Grade students of Marketing Study Program at SMK based on scientific approach. The subjects of the research were grade X students of marketing study program at SMK Negeri 1 Medan. This research was classified as Research and Development (R&D). The research procedure was adapted from the research procedure proposed by Gall, Gall and Borg (2003). There were two questionnaires used to collect the data. The first questionnaire was used to collect data in need analysis while the second questionnaire was used to collect the data about the appropriateness of the materials in the expert judgment. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The research findings showed that English speaking materials of descriptive text developed have met good characteristic and appropriate for grade ten students of marketing study program. It was indicated by the mean of expert judgments. The mean score for content is 3.5 which categorized as “Very Good”. The mean score for language is 3.8 which categorized as “Very Good”. The mean score for presentation is 3.5 which categorized as “Very Good”. The mean score for graphic is 3.75 which categorized as “Very Good”

Abstract

The objective of this study aimed to analyzing higher order thinking skills of reading comprehension questions in English textbook for eleventh grade of senior high school. It also used qualitative research method for collected, analyzed and classified reading questions based on revised of Bloom’s Taxonomy. The data of this study were taken from reading comprehension questions in Contextual English textbook. The findings showed that the distribution of the higher order thinking skills looks like: the analyze skill obtains 20 out of 155 reading comprehension questions (12.9%) while the evaluate skill only obtains 4 out 155 questions (2.6%) and the create skill obtains 2 out of 155 questions (1.2%). The dominant level of the higher order thinking skills contained in analyze skill (12.9%). These results do not achieve proportion of thinking order skills namely 30% for C1 and C2, 40% for C3 and C4, and 30% for C5 and C6. It shows that the distribution of the higher order thinking skills in the reading comprehension questions in Contextual English textbook is unequal. Key words: English language textbook, reading comprehension questions,revised edition of Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to develop materials of student’s worksheet in writingdescriptive text based on scientific approach for grade 10 MAN Binjai. This study wasconducted by using Research and Development (R & D) method. The data werecollecting through observing, interview and questionnaires. The results of this researchfound that the worksheet in writing descriptive text for students was not based on thescientific approach that applied scientific approach and student faced problems and haddifficulties in learning the writing skill. Researcher developed worksheet by usingScientific Approach and based on experts judgement of validating, it was appropriate tobe used by the tenth grade students of MAN Binjai to develop their skill in writingdescriptive text.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing features of teacher talk in teaching speaking. The subject of this study were English Teacher and 40 students at first grade of SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The data were collected through the following: observation, and audio recording. In this research, the FLINT is used to identify the categories of teacher talk occur during the learning process. Moreover, this study is conducted in the form of descriptive qualitative research where the researcher as the non-participant observer on the classroom. From the data that has been taken, it is obtained that the categories of teacher talk used by the teacher in teaching speaking in the first grader of SMA Negeri 20 Medan are deals with feeling, praises or encourages, jokes, uses ideas of students, repeats students response verbatim, ask questions, gives information, corrects without rejection, give direction, criticizes student behavior, and Criticize student response. The finding of the study showed that there are eleven features of teacher talk occur in English classroom interaction and the dominant feature of teacher talk was ask questions (40.2%). The feature of teacher talk which is dominantly used by the teacher help students more active in the class because the teacher gave the oppurtunity to the learners to deliver their ideas, and try their ability in speaking skill. Keywords : Features of Teacher Talk, Foreign Language Interaction, Learning Process

Abstract

Abstract This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraphs through the application of Team Pair Solo. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class X/A SMA Nurul Ilmi Padangsidempuan that consisted of 32 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and the first cycle consisted of four meetings and the second cycle consisted of two meetings. The instruments of collecting data were quantitative data (Writing Test) and Qualitative data (observation sheet, interview and questionnaire sheet). Based on the writing test score, students’ score kept improving in every test. In the test I the mean was 66,4375, in the test II the mean was 78,125 and the test III the mean was 87,5625. Based on observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that teaching learning process ran well. Students were active and interest in writing. The result of the research showed that TPS can improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. Key Words: Achievement, Descriptive, Paragraph, Team Pair Solo

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the needs of grade eight students of SMP Negeri 8 Medan in learning reading English using website and concerns on how web-based reading learning materials are developed for grade VIII students of junior high school.  The nature of this study is Research and Development (R & D). The steps were conducting the needs analysis, writing the course grid, storyboarding, writing the first draft, obtaining the experts’ judgments, revising the first draft, and finally writing the final draft. This study involved 32 students of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Medan as the research subjects. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaires (needs analysis questionnaire and expert judgment questionnaires). The results of the needs analysis questionnaire were analyzed using percentage and the expert judgment were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Data got from the result of need analysis was being the basis in developing the product. The website was divided into five pages: Home, Start Up, Your Focus, Your Activity, and Grammar Corner. Then, based on the expert judgment, the website are appropriate for the grade eight students of junior high school. It was proved by the mean value of 4.2 for web based materials which cover the appropriateness of content, language, and presentation, and 4.5 for the website.Key words: Research and Development (R&D), Website, Reading Materials, Junior High School

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate whether the application of Taba model improve the students’ achievement in Reading Comprehension. This study was an classroom action research. The subject of this study was class VIII SMP Negeri 1 Bandar which consisted of 32 students. The study was conducted in two cycles, cycle I consisted of three meetings and cycle II consisted of three meetings. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data (reading comprehension test) and qualitative data (observation sheert, and questionnaire sheet). Based on reading comprehension scores, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation and based on the observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet it was found that teaching and learning process ran well. Students could enlarge their thinking process. The result of this study showed that the Taba Model improved the students’ achievement in reading comprehension.   Keyword: reading comprehension, taba model, classroom action research.

Abstract

                                                       ABSTRACTThe aim of this study is to analyze the implementation of peer assessment in reading skill through task based learning at grade tenth students in SMA Negeri 1 Labuhan Deli. It used qualitative research method through four stages; 1) Data collection, 2) Data Reduction, 3) Data presentation, and 4) Conclusion and verification. The data of this research were peer assessment used by each teacher and sources of data in this research were three English teachers at grade tenth students in SMA Negeri 1 Labuhan Deli. The techniques of collecting the data were by conducting observations, interviews, and documentations.  The findings showed that two teachers applied peer assessment good, and one teacher didn’t applied peer assessment. The result showed that the implementation of peer assessment in reading skill through task based learning at grade tenth in SMA Negeri 1 Labuhan Deli was almost run effectively and also categorized sufficient due to some obstacle and supporting factors.  Key words: Implementation,Peer Assessment, Reading Skill, Qualitative Descriptive, Task Based Learning
