Abstract

This research was aimed to develop appropriate, interesting and attractive speaking media in teaching descriptive text for seventh grade students of MTsS UMMI Lubuk Pakam. Due to the result in the form of product, this study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (1989) theory with some modifications. The subject of this study was the seventh grade students of MTsS UMMI Lubuk Pakam. In conducting this research, the procedures were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis, designing the first draft of media, revising the media, and producing the final product as the meme comic. The instruments of collecting data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The interview result was analyzed as qualitative data and the questionnaires analyzed as quantitative data. These data were needs of students covering target needs and learning needs. This study developed speaking media which only focused on descriptive text taught in the odd semester. Abstract

This research concerned on The Effect of Teaching Media on Students’ Achievement in Speaking. This study used the experimental design. The population of the study was the students of SMP Negeri 1 Air Putih. There were twenty students from five classes as the sample of the research. This study was conducted with two groups namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by applying English comics while control group was taught with written texts. The instrument of collecting the data was used tape recorder. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The calculation shows that t-observed (2.378) is higher than t-table (2.086) at the level of significance 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected and alternative hypothesis is accepted. It means that teaching speaking by applying English comics as the media has more significant effects than without using English comics.   Keywords: English Comics, Story Retelling, Students’ Achievement in Speaking, Experimental Research

Abstract

 This research focused on the types of questions used by teacher and the reason for using the questions. It was a qualitative research design. The subject of this study was an English teacher of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Muara. The data were collected by observing, video recording, and interview. The result showed that the teacher only used 4 out of 5 types of questions, they were question of literal, question of reorganization, question of inference, and question of personal response. It was also found that there were other types of questions which categorized as students’ knowledge, vocabulary, and students’ experiences. Out of the 4 types of question, the type of questions frequently used was question of literal. Followed by question of reorganization came as the second, and the least used by the teacher was question of personal response. The reasons for using the types of questions were to measure students’ comprehension and to facilitate students towards comprehension. Key words: teaching reading comprehension, types of questions

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to describe how the teachers teach reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text to the eleventh grade students in Medan and to reveal the underlying reasons why they did that way. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The subjects of this study were two English teachers who taught at the eleventh grade students at SMA Methodist 8 Medan in academic year 2016/2017. The data were collected by observing, video recording and interviewing and analyzed by using Miles and Huberman technique (1994). The findings of the study showed that most of the teachers’ way are not yet focusing on teaching reading comprehension but rather focusing to the teaching the knowledge of the genre. The underlying reasons of the teachers’ ways in teaching reading comprehension did not facilitate reading comprehension. It was due to the misperception of the concept of teaching reading comprehension. Keywords: teaching, reading comprehension, hortatory exposition text

Abstract

This research aim at exploring how local culture integrated in English languageteaching to increase learners’ motivation to speak English. This research wascarried out of eighth grade students’ at SMPN 3 Perbaungan. This research wasconducted by using descriptive qualitative data. The data of this research werecollected by using observation, interview and audio recording. the samples wereselected purposively based on their cultural backgrounds. The result revealed thatby integrating local culture in learning English was easier for the learners. Thelearners had willingness to speak English since most of they were familiar withcultural input.

Abstract

This study deals with the designing of English Speaking Materials By Using Digital Storytelling Project For The Eleventh Grade Students of Senior High School.  The objectives of this study are: (1) to know the English speaking materials needed by grade eleventh students of senior high school, (2) to design appropriate English speaking materials by using digital storytelling project for the eleventh grade students of senior high school. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 3 Medan. The research procedures of this study is Research and Development (R&D) through three phases : 1) evaluation and need analysis, 2) course design, and 3) materials validation. The instruments used were questionnaire, interview and documentation sheet. The data from evaluation and need analysis were analyzed by using descriptive technique and the data from expert judgement results were using quantitative data analysis. The result of this study is a course book of speaking materials by using digital storytelling project which consist of title, objective, introduction, observing, practices and reflection. The materials consist of three units, they are What Is Your Opinion, How May I Help You? and You Are Loved. Based on the experts’ judgement result, the score was 3.97 which belongs to good category. Keywords: Digital Storytelling Project, Speaking Materials.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the target and learning needs of Grade X SMA SWASTA MARISI MEDAN. Moreover, it had a goal to develop English materials for learning writing skills. This is a research and development (R&D) study. The subjects of this research were 25 students of Grade X SMA SWASTA MARISI MEDAN. The need analysis data were collected by using questionnaires and an interview. Then, the results of questionnaires were calculated through percentage. Thus, the highest percentage was considered as the needs of students. Meanwhile, the results of expert judgment were analyzed in the form of descriptive statistics. Three units of materials were developed in this research. Each unit consists of introduction, main lesson and reinforcement. These materials used Project-Based  Learning as the approach in learning writing skill. The units covered some tasks as identify the generic structure, write a short paragraph and complete the sentences. Mostly, the themes used represented students’ knowledge about the popular places and person around them. According to the results of the expert judgment, the materials were very relevant to be used for Grade X SMA SWASTA MARISI MEDAN.    Keywords: learning writing, writing, descriptive text

Abstract

This study concerns with improvement of students’ achievement in writing recount text through mind mapping technique in Junior High School. The subject of the study was the students in SMP Free Methodist 1 Medan, class VIII-1 which consisted of 37 students. This study was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research. The procedure of this research was done in two cycles in six meeting. The mean of students’ score in test I was 67.24. It was increased in test II to 72.78 and in test III, it became 78.79. The improvement was not only showed in the mean of the students’ score but also in the number of students who got point up to 75. In test I, the number of students who got point up to 75 was only 5.4%. In test II, the number was increased to 29.8% while in test III it became 81.1%. Based on the diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that the students gave good responds in the teaching and learning process. Based on the result of quantitative and qualitative data, it can be concluded that the application of mind mapping technique had improved the junior high school students’ achievement in writing recount text.   Keywords: Writing, Recount Text, Mind Mapping, Junior High School

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the content validity of English summative test items of the eighth grade students at SMPN 4 Pollung in connection with the learning indicators, to investigate the reason of describing content validity and to write the test items with good content validity.In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative design. The data in this study were the test items of summative test that obtained by coming and asking the test from the English teacher at the school. This study described the conformity and inconformity of the English summative test items in the even semester of the eighth grade students at SMPN 4 Pollung with the learning indicators. Then the researcher interpreted the conformity level of the English summative test to the learning indicators in term of content validity by using Arikunto’s criteria.The findings of this study showed that the test items is 35% conform to the learning indicators and it falls into the level 21 – 40% which is called poor. It means that the content validity of the English summative test items of the eighth grade students of SMPN 4 Pollung is poor.   Keywords: content validity, summative test.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing features of teacher’s talk in teaching procedure text. The data of the study were the script of utterances the teacher and students. The source of data were the twelfth grade of Senior High School at SMA Swasta Tunas Pelita Binjai where the teacher taught 27 students in one class. This study was used descriptive qualitative. SETT (Self Evaluation of Teacher Talk) framework used to identify and classified features of teacher talk during learning process which used video recording and field notes. The finding of the study showed that the dominant feature of teacher talk was extended leaner-turn (41, 6%). This feature effected on the students’ learning process because the teacher gave the opportunity to the learners to deliver their ideas, it could improve the learners’ speaking skill. Keywords :  Procedure Text, Features of Teacher Talk, Learning Process.
