Abstract

This article aims to analyze Social Media Use as a platform for political participation among first-time voters in Indonesia, particularly for the 2024 election. Social Media Use as a medium of political participation among first-time voters significantly impacts the political process and elections. This research is based on a qualitative method approach using a literature approach. Data collection techniques include documents and library data relevant to the subject matter, such as journal articles, books, Google Scholar, and references from websites accessed via the Internet. The collected data is then analyzed using descriptive techniques, which involve presenting and interpreting the data in detail. The findings reveal that social media significantly influences both the political participation and political awareness of first-time voters. For the 2024 election, according to the results of the DPT determination by the KPU, the number of first-time voters or millennial generation, namely Generation Y and Generation Gen Z aged 17-30 years and have never exercised their right to vote reached 63,953,031 people or 31.23%. First-time voters widely use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, and Messenger

Abstract

This research stems from Mahkamah Konstitusi’s decision to change the electoral constitution when the election stage was already underway. Netizens then discussed the decision of the Majelis Kehormatan Mahkamah Konstitusi (MKMK) which decided that the chairman of the Constitutional Court violated the code of ethics when hearing the election constitutional lawsuit. The election organizer (KPU RI) also did not escape the discussion of netizens after being decided to violate the code of ethics by Dewan Kehormatan Penyelenggara Pemilu (DKPP). The conversations of netizens on X/Twitter regarding the Chief Justice of the MK, MKMK, and the Chairman of the KPU were collected using NodeXL, then described in the form of tables and descriptions. The communication network analysis method was chosen as a data analysis tool. X/Twitter was used as a means of expressing opinions and disseminating information related to the 2024 elections. Netizens' conversations about the Chief Justice of the MK, MKMK, and the Chairman of the KPU signal the danger of democracy in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article explores the reasons why brokers shift from candidates with high winning prospects and substantial resources to candidates with lower winning prospects and fewer resources ahead of the 2024 elections. Building on Aspinall's study, the research aims to analyze the motivations behind the formation of Projo Ganjar by several Projo cadres who did not follow Jokowi's directive to support Prabowo Subianto, despite Prabowo having high winning prospects and substantial resources. A qualitative method was employed through in-depth interviews with key informants and literature review. The findings indicate that broker defections are driven by non-material factors such as incompatibility with the patron, changes in patron behavior, and alignment with other candidates. This study emphasizes that the relationship between brokers and candidates is not solely based on material benefits but is also influenced by non-material factors.

Abstract

This article examines the forms of politico-religious narratives constructed by Islamic parties in relation to public health support and electoral interests during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Focusing on the United Development Party (PPP) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the study employs a political discourse analysis approach, drawing data from media reports and the parties’ official websites concerning the government’s pandemic response. The findings indicate that both PPP and PKS utilized religious narratives to provide a spiritual framework for interpreting the pandemic, which aligns with their respective political stances and electoral objectives. The PPP, with its traditionalist base and role within the governing coalition, framed the pandemic as a divine test, promoting adherence to health protocols and civil obedience with subtle criticism. In contrast, the oppositional PKS portrayed the pandemic as a disaster necessitating divine protection, while consistently criticizing the government’s handling of the crisis. The article concludes that Islamic parties’ disaster perspectives are shaped by the interplay of religious narratives and political interests.

Abstract

For almost ten years, Thailand was governed by a military junta that staged a coup. It disappointed the Thai people as there were problems with civil liberties and economic growth. These problems led to demands for political reform in 2020-2021. On the other hand, the Move Forward Party, as an opposition party with a reformist program, won a significant victory in the 2023 general election. Therefore, this research examines the relationship between the demands for political reform and the triumph of the Move Forward Party in 2023. The data comes from a literature study that helps trace the stages of demands for political reform and the relationship between activists and opposition political parties in Thailand. The analysis using the concept of collective identity evolution shows that the movement demanding political reform disseminated through social media effectively unites the aspirations of the Thai people. Meanwhile, analysis using a socio-electoral coalition shows a reciprocal relationship between political reform activists and the Move Forward Party during the 2023 General Election in Thailand

Abstract

In January 2020, President Donald Trump introduced the Abraham Accords, often hailed as the deal of the century. Many criticized the proposal for focusing solely on U.S. diplomatic peace efforts in the Middle East and shifting the core issue from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the normalization of Arab-Israeli relations. Despite its controversies, the Abraham Accords normalized relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, potentially reshaping the "New Middle East" differently. This article explains the Abraham Accords, which primarily involve several Arab countries recognizing Israel's sovereignty and their willingness to establish full diplomatic relations with the Jewish state. The researcher draws two key conclusions by reviewing the process, content, atmosphere, and responses to the agreement. First, although the agreement seemed sudden, its achievement involved a complex, lengthy, and not entirely planned process. Second, Arab countries pursued this option not only out of solidarity with Palestine or pressure from their patron, the United States, but also to achieve various strategic interests—political, military, economic, and others—thereby effectively sidelining the Pales ti nian issue.

Using an Applied Islamic Studies approach, the article critiques orthodox interpretations and advocates for a dynamic, tolerant, and inclusive political model. Findings emphasize the integration of spirituality in modern governance, ensuring Islam's relevance without losing its essential values. Abstract

This paper examines the phenomenon of political dynasty elite networks in Indonesia through the lens of Charles Wright Mills' thought. The growing tendency of political dynasties raises academic concerns as it narrows public participation and weakens democracy. Power is no longer contested through healthy democratic mechanisms but is instead inherited within closed circles of interconnected elites bound by family ties. This study employs a literature review method by analyzing Mills’ seminal work, The Power Elite (1956), combined with a Heideggerian phenomenological approach to understand the ongoing reality of power. The findings reveal that elites hold power not through public legitimacy but through domination by informal power networks. In this context, Indonesian democracy is reduced to mere formalities, while key strategic decisions remain in the hands of a select few elites detached from the interests of the people.

Abstract

This study analyzes the ideological construction of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the Indonesian People’s Wave Party (Gelora), focusing on differences in principles, ideological orientation, communication strategies, and socio-political base segmentation following the internal fragmentation that led to Gelora’s emergence as a splinter of PKS. The study addresses a research gap concerning how new parties build ideological legitimacy in the post-reform political era. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through a literature study, drawing data from official party documents, scholarly articles, and online media coverage. The analysis applies Paul Lucardie’s new party theory, which categorizes parties as prophets, purifiers, or challengers. The findings reveal that PKS maintains its character as a conservative Islamic party, while Gelora emerges as an ideological challenger promoting moderate Islam, inclusive nationalism, and a geopolitical agenda. Both parties’ ideologies are shaped through official documents, public narratives, communication styles, and symbolic strategies in response to democratic and pluralistic dynamics in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper aims to explain the concept of caliphate in a theological and historical framework, while analyzing contemporary discourse. The caliphate is a system of leadership based on the Qur'an and Sunnah, with the example of the Rashidun Caliphates emphasizing justice, wisdom, and accountability. However, in an increasingly complex world, the relevance of the caliphate remains a matter of debate. Historically, the caliphate underwent a transformation from a representative model in early Islam to a monarchy. Moreover, the end of the Ottoman Empire marked the end of the classical caliphate and sparked discussions about its relevance today. This study concludes that the caliphate functions as a Sharia-based Islamic system of government to achieve social justice. Its value remains relevant as a model of ethical leadership that emphasizes justice, trust, and wisdom. However, its implementation requires contextual and inclusive reinterpretation to suit the needs of a modern, pluralistic society. Ultimately, the idea of the caliphate can be an inspiration without ignoring contemporary realities.
