Abstract

This study is entitled “An Analysis of Students’ Grammatical Error in Argumentative Writing”. The objective of this study is to identify what types of grammatical errors mostly made by students in argumentative writing based on Dulays’s surface strategy taxonomy (1982). The students sometimes make errors on the use of grammar when they produce an English writing, also in argumentative writing. It is because Indonesian and English have their own grammatical system. In order to obtain valid findings, qualitative method was used in this study. Six (6) argumentative writing were collected from 6 students in the second semester. Based on the error analysis conducted, the researcher found that errors regarding auxiliary and wrong form of words were the most dominant errors in misformation which consisted of 22 errors. Then it is followed by omission errors consisted of 6 errors and the dominant grammatical error done by the students was omitting the auxiliary. Addition and misordering were only found 1 error from each of them. The findings indicate that the students have difficulties in using correct form, especially in misformation of suffix –s/ -es/ -ed/ -ing. This problem may occur due to their lack of knowledge of English grammatical rules.

Abstract

This research was entitled “The Use of Elicitation Technique in Improving Students’ Speaking Skill”. Since there were many students who have problems in learning speaking because the students do not have enough opportunity to speak in English, so they feel uncomfortable to speak and feel awkward to say everything in English because lack of practice. The use of Elicitation technique was choosen as a means to improve an active situation in their speaking skill. This research aimed to found out whether there was any significant effect of using Elicitation as teaching method toward improving students’ speaking skill in a junior high school 4 Garut academic year 2015/2016. The participants of the research were consisted of 32 students of second grade. This is a quantitative research using pre-experimental research design. To achieved the purpose, a test including pre-test and post- test was employed. The test was in the form of speaking test which was retelling the story that had been heard. Normalized Gain Test was used to found out the significant difference between students’ scores in pre-test and post-test. The data from pre-test and post-test showed that the average of the students’ achievement in pre-test was 11.19 and the average of students’ achievement in post-test was 56.19 and the result from Normalized Gain showed that 99.9% students can improve their speaking through the use of Elicitation technique. To analyze the data, the t-test was used and it was revealed that the value of tobserved=8.0494 and the value of tcritical=2.0317. The finding showed that tobserved was bigger than tcritical (8.0494 > 2.0317). The tobserved lied in the rejection area of Null Hypothesis (H0). On the contrary, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Based on the result of study, it can be concluded that Elicitation technique have significant effect in improving students’ speaking skill and the use of Elicitation technique made students easier in presenting their ideas. Therefore, the teacher should have the best teaching method to use in teaching and learning process that make students actively speak up in the class and the students should practice their speaking continuously. This result indicates that the use of Elicitation technique is effective to improve students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

This study, entitled “Students’ Strategies and Problems in Translating a Poem” was conducted at the English program in one college in Garut area, West Java, involving six students of the sixth semester. It aimed to analyze the strategies they applied and the problems they encountered in translating an English poem entitled A Dream Within a Dream by Edgar Allan Poe into Indonesian. Using the qualitative case design, the data was collected from the documents of students’ translation works and interview and was analyzed through textual descriptive analysis. The data was analyzed using Lefevere’s (1992) theory of seven poetry translation strategies and Hariyanto’s (2003) theory about poetry translation problems. The findings of the study revealed that Literal Translation (38%) was the most used strategy, followed by Interpretation (24.7%), Metrical Translation (20%), Poetry into Prose (12%), and Rhymed Translation (5.3%). However, two other strategies, namely Phonemic Translation and Blank Verse Translation, were not found to be used at all by the students. This study also found that the main problem they encountered was Linguistic Problems, more specifically vocabulary, while the second main problem was Literary or Aesthetic Problems, more specifically the rhymes of the poem. It is recommended that further research to be conducted in a different setting and using a different kind of poem to give more information regarding students’ strategies and problems in translating a poem.

Abstract

This study was carried out to analyze the grammatical errror analysis which are made by the students in their speaking performance. It was based on the assumption that grammatical rule has a function in speaking to make the communication clearly and to convey the information in appropriate way. The study was conducted under qualitative methodology by using case study as the appropriate research design. The data source of this research is 1st grade student from the speaking class of English Education major that consisted of 24 students. For collecting the data, the researcher used observation fieldnote and also video record. The writer identified and analyzed data based on the types of error using Dulay’s theory. Based on the finding, the result of this research showed that students made a total errors 318 times divided into four types of errors: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. From the quantity of each error types, misformation was the highest errors produced by the students. It took 175 times of errors. And omission had 115 times of errors, moreover, 24 errors fell into error of addition, and the last one misordering was the lowest errors produced by the students the total was 5 errors. Actually, errors are necessary in learning a language, especially learning English language as the foreign language. Thus, error analysis also helps the students identify what the errors are made, because the students cannot apply their language acquisition directly without committing error firstly. They cannot achieve the target language perfectly when the errors appear. Error analysis is very advantageous for both learner and teacher. For learner, by paying more attention, the learners are expected to increase their knowledge on the English grammar. Whereas for teachers, hopefully the research can be useful information in teaching process and in the end, the teacher can be able to teach the material appropriately

Abstract

This study was focused on the analysis of students’ anxiety in speaking English as a foreign language. More specifically, the research sought to find out how the students reduce their anxiety in speaking as foreign language. To achieve the purpose, this study employed a qualitative case study design for investigating and analyzing the natural situation focused on students’ anxiety. To collect the data, this study used semi-structured interview and open-ended questionnaire. Moreover, the participants to be involved in this study are eighteen students in one of boarding schools in Tasikmalaya, Indonesia. The result showed that the students have strategies to reduce their speaking anxiety; first, the students need to prepare the outline and make a concept related to the material, second, avoiding eye-contact to their friends and teacher, third, getting help from peers when students feel anxious about learning, and the last strategy is making the students enjoy in learning English. The findings revealed that those strategies can help the students more less their anxiety in speaking English. Hopefully, this study may portray a clear explanation for readers about students’ anxiety in speaking English and for researchers in investigating relevant area, more importantly, by knowing the students’ responses to their anxiety.
