Abstract

Self-defense mechanism is part of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. According to Freud, self-defense mechanism is an individual way of coping with anxiety-related outbursts. Anxiety can arise when there is a conflict of desire between the id and ego because the id gets a sex drive and aggression that forces the ego to do something it wants. The problem of individuals who overcome anxiety by self-defense can also occur in human "creation" in the form of characters in literary works, as in the novel. The novel to be studied in this research is a children's novel from Germany entitled Pünktchen und Anton by Erich Kästner. The main characters, Pünktchen and Anton, are still in elementary school. Pünktchen and Anton have different life problems from each other. This study aims to know in depth or to explore the type of self-defense mechanism used by the two main figures in the face of anxiety. This research is qualitative research with a content analysis method. The results show there are 31 data on self-defense mechanisms in this novel. Pünktchen uses the form of Repression 3 data, Reaction Formation 6 data, Displacement 1 data, Fixation 1 data, Disclaimer 1 data, and Rationalization 1 data. Anton uses the form of Repression 4 data, Reaction Formation 6 data, Displacement 3 data, Sublimation 2 data, and Rationalization 3 data. The second sub-focus on the type of personality of the main character, the results show Pünktchen used 4 data for id, 4 data for superego, and 1 data for ego. It means Pünktchen's personality is dominated by id and superego. Anton used 3 data for the id, 6 data for the ego, and 5 data for the superego. It means Anton has a healthy personality because he was dominated by his ego.

Abstract

In this paper, the feminine character of Pamela is explored throughout the epistolary novel. One is concerned with how Pamela’s constructed character as a female figure is represented with language and action, rather than adopting a defending position of the suppressed females in the 18th century. Pamela’s politeness and indirectness in her letters are aspects of her virtue and femininity. However, her language and use of specific politeness strategies, can also be considered a way of manipulating Mr B. Through her voice, there is be a kind of gradual unity of the female and male voices. Pamela is a representative of a doubled voice, exhibiting both of her inner and outer femininity. In this study, Pamela’s language is analysed using Julia Kirteva’s concept of semiotics. Keywords: Semiotics, Pamela, sign language, verbal language, femininity

Abstract

There needs to be more literature regarding English teachers' perspectives on the actual practice of extensive reading in the classroom in Indonesia. Therefore, a study aimed to investigate the implementation of extensive reading based on the teachers' perspectives. This study employed a qualitative research method as the research design. The participants were two senior high school English teachers and two junior high school English teachers. Interviews were conducted as the data collection and transcribed for the data analysis. The results showed that all English teachers had acknowledged and were well-informed of the benefits of extensive reading. However, half of them projected their positive beliefs through implementing extensive reading in their teaching practice, but the other half did not. The obstacles found in applying extensive reading were the students' need for more interest in reading, their lack of vocabulary mastery, and opposing views toward reading. Therefore, this insight into the study's results has enriched the literature, and the stakeholder of the curriculum should provide support regarding the teachers' concern about implementing extensive reading. Keywords: perspective, implementation, extensive reading

Abstract

This study explores the linguistic landscape at the Cisaat village and explains the reflection of top-down tourism approach in the linguistic landscape at the Cisaat village. The village is planned to be a leading agritourism and educational tourist village by a state university based in the capital city of Indonesia – Universitas Negeri Jakarta. The plan is formulated with a top-down approach since each plan and move is decided by the actors or authorities on the upper hierarchical level (top) and centralistic. To understand how LL reflects the top-down tourism approach, any signs along the main road in the village were collected and classified according to the language use. The result shows that only two languages were found to be significant for this study: Indonesian and Sundanese language. The Indonesian monolingual signs dominated the LL in the area. The anticipated appearance of local language from the mobility of language in periphery and the anticipated multilingualism from the grand plan of Kampung Bahasa by the university does not translate into the LL. The result reflects the top-down tourism approach in the area. The village becomes an area of interesting encounter between centre and periphery, top and bottom, affected by the tourism approach initiated by the university from the capital of Indonesia. Keywords: linguistic landscape, monolingualism, monolingual signs, top-down approach, top-down signs, tourism
