This paper aims at explaining the ambivalences in the novel Mencari Sarang Angin (MSA) written by Suparto Brata. The ambivalences found in MSA are seen not only in the space and time movement, but also in the dialects of European (Dutch) and Javanese culture. The space and time movement points back at a space and time that will be left. Although the European culture is placed in a higher position as compared to Javanese culture, it can't move up Javanese culture easily. In relation to the position between European and Javanese, or between the colonialist and the colony, the ambivalences have occured not only between receiving European logic and keeping Javanese philosophy and between receiving democratic values and feudalism, but also between monogamy and polygamy marriage. The relation is not one that ignores each other, but it the one that creates third space, it is the hybrid of Javanese and European culture.

This research analyzes the function of inflectional affixes as person, number, and gender in Arabic verbs from inflectional and derivational morphological perspectives. It is a qualitative research using structural linguistic method. Based on the data analysis, the result shows that there are two systems of inflection in Arabic verbs. They are inflectional suffix and inflectional prefix. The system of inflectional suffix occurs on perfect verbs (madi) and the system of inflectional prefix occurs on imperfect verbs (mudari'). The inflections function to mark the relation of verbs and their subjects in person, number, and gender in a sentence. The existence of inflection system proves that word-order in Arabic is flexible, i.e. the position of the verbs can be before or after the subjects. In addition to that, the system of inflection also shows that morphologically Arabic is inflectional, which means that its words are formed of morphemes. Each morpheme supports the concept different grammar.

Systemic Functional Linguistics is a linguistics approach which cop-siders not only the structure of the language but also its social context. In the Systemic Functional Linguistics the concept of genre is defined as a step-by-step activity to reach the goal. The concept of genre is used to describe the cultural context in a language. According to this view, text should be seen and observed in its interaction with the context and social background. For that, the genre analysis will constantly involve the linguistic social context in the forms of field, tenor, mode, schematic structure and its realization in the text.

Since the mid - 19th century the Samin people have made a contribution to resisting the Dutch colonial rule in rural Java through their non-violence movement and passive resistance (lijdelijk verset). History also notes that they have a unique culture and system of values which reflect their own local wisdom. However, many negative rumours have become widespread regarding this community. This article explores the marriage practices in Samin society and investigates how this society gives meaning to these marriage practices. It also examines whether the practice of 'virginity tests' and 'stray marriages' exist in contemporary Samin society.

The aim of this study is to investigate Minangkabau women in politics who are well known for their egalitarian characteristics and have a central position in their community. There is a great gap between women representation and equality. In general, women's political representation and position in local politics are still low in West Sumatera. In fact, there is no causal relationship between women's egalitarian characteristics and their position in politics. In other words, the egalitarian characteristics do not significantly influence votes they may have in general election, since share of votes may depend greatly on electoral processes, such as recruitment systems; relationship with voters and social network with social organizations; relevant regulations providing more opportunities and facilitating women in their efforts to accomplish the elected post. To succeed in politics, they must have high interests in politics and make optimal efforts in a progressive and sustainable way.

Royal traditional arts are generally influenced by the power of the king. An example is Bedhaya Anglirmendhung. This royal traditional dance has a heroic theme.
