Abstract

This paper Is about the dynamic of discourse between the so called Transnational ideologies and Religious local wisdom. The reason this discourse is necessary to understand well in relation to religious life in Indonesia is because some transnational ideologies have succeeded in attracting the attention of some Islamic people. This is a paper with an anthropological approach. Thus, the description is based on phenomenological observation. This paper will look at some transnational ideologies offerings that attracted some Islamic historical experiences which had built the grandour of Islamic civilization as the nostalgia to back up their offer. One of the example is the idea of Khilafah which is propagated by the so called Hizbut Tahrir. Another is the Jihad movement which is propagated by for instance ISIS and previously al Qaida. This paper will analyze the reasons why some Islamic people are very interested in these movements while what transnational ideologies offer is actually the solidarity to be Muslims based on the bad situation of the Middle East. However, these transnational movements have gain their supporters in the name of Islamic solidarity based on the historical example of Islamic golden age. Therefore, the ideas offered is constructing new Islamic world order based on Islamic teachings and form in accord with their framework and paradigm. The New Islamic World order will leash the suffer of Islamic people from unjust treatment the so called western domination. In relation to this in Indonesian case, it is important to consider religious local wisdom as a filter to this propagation. It is because religious local wisdom will give deeper understanding to the people how to understand the teaching of their religion based on the context of their life and their local religious heritage without deviating from the essence of religion.

Abstract

Nationalist movements in India during the mid 19th century took momentum and gained popularity when various intellectual freedom fighters started reinterpreting the religious texts motivating the educated people. The reinterpretation was oriented towards inducing the mass with the feeling of self-consciousness and nationalism. Most of these freedom fighters i.e. Bankimchandra Chatterjee, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Swami Vivekanada, Aurobindo Ghose, Mahatma Gandhi, Vinoba Bhave, who wrote extensively on ”˜Bhagavad Gita’ and their basic interpretation converged on ethical and moral basis for nationalism. Nationalist leaders like Bal Gangdhar Tilak who wrote Gita Rahasya in which he has justified the use of violence for the cause of nation unlike Mahatma Gandhi and Vonobha Bhave who oriented interpretation of Gita towards non-violence. However, both the interpretations worked in mobilizing the people against the imperialism by invoking conscience of the mass towards nationalism through religious texts. The article will deal with the stepwise process of highlighting religious texts and their reinterpretation by the leaders towards nationalism.

Abstract

Kampung Bugis is a small community of Bugis people who occupy a special land in the customary village of Serangan. The oral narrative stated that the village was a gift from the King of Pamecutan Badung in regard for their merits in assisting the kingdom during the war. They were eventually known as hard workers, courageous, and immigrants like the Bugis people in general. They also bring those sets of attitude to overseas, one of them in the customary village of Serangan, Denpasar. In addition to being able to adapt very well, they were also capable of maintaining a religious life in harmony with the society of Serangan where the major religion was Hindu. In 2007, the village of Kampung Bugis experienced a tragedy of eviction that eliminated half of the village. During the evictions they also survived by continuing the tradition and caring for the heritage of their noble cultural treasures through the old As Syuhada mosque, the old Qur’an book, the historical old tomb, and Bugis typical stage house. This writing is to highlight the cultural treasures and tradition that the people of Bugis strive for despite of many unfortunate events they experience including the recent evictions.

Abstract

The article is an examination of practices, such as the transmission and movement of ideas and knowledge, by which Indonesian Islam or what is called Islam(ic) Nusantara comes into being as a distinct civilizational body, and then considers the ways in which these practices claim a place in a wider Muslim societies. “Angajawi” (being Muslim Nusantara) is a strategic term to convey these practices, while, at the same time, to look closely at the way they constitute the vitality and resilience of Islam(ic) Nusantara cultural riches among the citizens of Muslim world. The method followed in this article is firstly to track down the flow of ideas from Jawi or Nusantara as they were brought about by Indonesian agents of trade, knowledge and pilgrimage to the Holy Land since earlier centuries of the coming of Islam to Indonesia; and then, secondly, to draw our attention to the worldwide Muslim reception of these ideas as the creative energy and qualities of Indonesian Islam in dealing with the problems of humanity. Furthermore, the meaning of “Islam Nusantara”needs to be clarified so as to provide a clear comprehension of the globalized qualities or core ideals of “angajawi”.

Abstract

Past-historical concepts could influence and even led the growth of culture, nation, or individual life. It could be also used as a role-model. The same case occured with the process of Islamic recruitment that occurred at the local level, which was written on the manuscript (lontaraq) in details. Manuscript became the entry point in this study. The focus of the study, in addition, was religious and countries which could be paired together in the structure of kingdom or government agencies. The main source of this study was generated from the Lontaraq Akkarungeng manuscript, and further compared with other Lontaraq or manuscripts. The proposed problem in this study was how the acceptance and the role of the state towards religion in institutional management? The results of the study suggested that the Islamization process by institution effected the management of government agencies. One of them was pararara saraq [syarak/shari’a] that had its own formal structure. It should be noted that the functions of the royal institution was to regulate the socio-culture, statehood, law and etc, consisting of elements of culture (adeq), jurisprudence, speech, social coating (wariq) as the original elements, followed by the elements of Islam in the Islamization phase in Bugis tribe, particularly in regency of Wajo. The Islamic element was then integrated into one value, which could be further integrated with the national legal system.

Abstract

Salut is an old village that became the entrance of Islam in Lombok island. This is known from the historical evidence found in the village. Some of the ancient historical dwellings in Salut are ancient mosques with 17th century architectural styles and tombs of Islamic spreaders, which assert that Salut is the first region to accept Islam in Lombok Island. Based on the information from Babad Lombok, Salut is the first visited village by Islamic spreaders from Java through the Carik harbour. The existence of the ancient mosque and the old tomb as a historical relic is a proof of the success of Islam in North Lombok in the past. This article will discuss about the heritage of Islam as the initial evidence of the entry of Islam in Lombok. The entry evidences of Islam in Salut is in the form of archaeological heritage, so the approach used in this study is historical archaeological approach. Historical archeology tries to give the explanation of these remnants, using other social sciences as auxiliary science. There are three things to be studied in this article, first, reveal the archaeological remains of Islam in Salut Lombok Utara; second, reveal the growth and development of Islam in North Lombok and it’s relation with other areas in Lombok.

Abstract

A lithographed copy of the Qur’ān, printed in Bombay (Mumbai, India) in 1881, was bought in Sumatra a few years later by a certain K. Bijls, a Malay-speaking Dutchman who made several markings in it which may be regarded as a form of “graffiti”, in the sense of markings asserting his ownership. This same person most probably also added a marginal calligraphic composition to the text, in a manner that is typical of Malay epistolography, perhaps prompted by an element on the printed page that was unfamiliar to him, hence catching his eye and imagination.

Abstract

Since the beginning of his arrival in the archipelago, the scholars involved in the initial process of spreading Islam have emerged with an offer of a variety of religious understandings. Such diversity and differences are sometimes not uncommon to bring followers into horizontal friction to conflict and even bloodshed. Animosity and tension caused by differences in religious understanding and practice even continued for several generations with various levels and levels of conflict as a result among Islamic community in the archipelago. The feud and tension of religious understanding that took place between Shaykh Ismail al-Minangkabawi and Shaykh Salim bin Samir al-Hadhrami, Shaykh Abd al-Ghani Bima, Shaykh Abd al-Azhim Madura which occurred in the 19th century were among the evidence of continued conflict in religious understanding between the scholars who spread Islam in the archipelago. However, this religious conflict is only within the limits of dialogue and debate without dragging followers to something that has the negative impact of confrontation or bloodshed. At the very least, these debate and dialogue were the ones described by Shaykh Isma'il al-Minangkabawi and the opponents of his teachings in the archipelago.

Abstract

This study aimedto describe the conception of aqidah (creed) in the book ‘Aqīdah al-‘Awām by Sayyid Ahmad Al-Marzuqi. This book is taught in Al-Ihya Ulumaddin Islamic Boarding School, Cilacap, CentralJava. The teaching of the book ‘Aqīdah al-‘Awām in Al-Ihya Ulumaddin Islamic Boarding, Cilacap, is one of the efforts to keep and maintain the aqidah of the students in the boarding school. The method used in this study was philology which was conductedin several steps, namely; identifying manuscript, describing manuscript,and conducting a content analysis of the manuscript. The results suggested that the conception of aqeeidah in the Book ‘Aqīdah al-‘Awām includes knowledge of the attributes of Allah (God), of Prophets/Messengers, Angels, Holy Book, and Day of Judgment. Aqeedah is a basic element of faith of a Muslim. Aqeedah must always be kept and maintained so as not to be lost or destructed by the influence of the environment. In addition, the book‘Aqīdah al-‘Awām also contains the stories of the family of Prophet Muhammad, and Isra' Mi'raj. The matan of this book was written by Sayid Ahmad al-Marzuqi al-Maliki. This book has been given for explanations or comments (syarah) by various parties, among them, Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani with Nuruz Zalam book, Bisri Mustafa with Rawihat al-Aqwam book, and Muhammad Ihya' Ulumiddin with the Syarah ‘Aqīdah al-‘Awām book. In addition, based on this book, there has also been written another book of which contents were taken from some of the contents of the book ‘Aqīdah al-‘Awām, for example, the Niyat Ingsun Ngaji book written by KH. Badawi Hanafi from Al-Ihya Ulumaddin Islamic Boarding School, Cilacap, Central Java.
