Abstract

There are more than a hundred manuscripts that were found in Sumenep Madura and were digitized by a research team from the Office of Religious Research and Development Ministry of Religious Affairs, Semarang Indonesia. That research focused on the identification and digitalization on those manuscripts; however, that research has not made further analysis on the content. Therefore, this paper examines the content of those manuscripts and classifies them into category based on the discipline. In addition, this essay looks at how these manuscripts related to pesantren and its ulama (kyai/Muslim scholars) in Sumenep Madura. This study uses a library research and content analysis method. The result shows that from the 107 digitized manuscripts, there are more than 107 texts embedded in those manuscripts, since some of the manuscripts are a compilation book.  The majority of those manuscripts consist of fiqh texts (64 texts), followed by tauhid/theology (46 texts), tasawuf/mysticism (8 texts), Qur’an (3 manuscripts), Arabic grammar and linguistic (6 texts), and the rests are texts about do’a, Javanese horoscope and history. All of those texts are written in an Arabic letter and used various languages such as Arabic, Javanese and Madurese. Some of those manuscripts are collection of ulama and pesantren in that area. These ulama and pesantren received their manuscripts from their parents and preserved it until now. Indeed, those manuscripts can be recognized as the legacy of pesantren and its ulama in Sumenep Madura.  In the context of Sumenep Madura, ulama/kyai and pesantren play significant roles in the development of Islam since they are the center of the society.

Abstract

This article is to identify a few concepts on independence and proposed a necessary approach in developing an identity of the country by analysing articles written in Qalam periodicals by three figures, Edrus, Dr Burhanuddin al-Helmy and Muhammad Isa Anshary. Qalam is a socio-politics periodical in Jawi script published in Singapore in 1950 until 1969. By analysing the writings, it is believed that proclamation of Indonesian independence in 1945 inspired the development of Malaysia as a sovereign country and influenced readers in Malaya, Singapore and Brunei in which their countries were still struggling for independence.

Abstract

Indonesia is known to the world not only for its multi religious ethos but for its unique cultural legacy, nurtured by its people who, as individuals, adhere to quite a wide variety of different faiths and beliefs. The author tries to give a narrative on those Indic elements in particular which have substantially influenced the social system of Indonesia. The paper deals with the historical perspective and how the present day Indonesian cultural system allows that the traditions of Ramayana, Mahabharata and other Indic folklore survive throughout the archipelago. It will also assess how the state’s patronage of these unique cultural traditions has made possible the preservation of these inexpensive customs which not only grant to the general mass a unique identity but also gives them a strong feeling of belonging to a common culture. The study establishes India’s strong cultural links with Indonesia by providing evidence of the deep route by which the oral traditions of mythological epics in Indonesia i.e. Ramayana and Mahabharata puppetry and also its dance forms (similar to the pattern of Ramleela in the northern part of India) came to be in the archipelago at all.

Abstract

The paper well go on to identify a number of different approaches that offer some measure of environmental protection and I will draw on structured and unstructured interviews with these thinkers in order to further explore their published works on nature conservation. From these sources, the author discovers an urgent need for religious communities to engage in the work of sustaining this planet. The author has also identified the means to utilize and empower religious doctrines for environmental conservation. Abstract
