Abstract

By the middle of the 19th century fully independent states in Southeast Asia were few, and all felt threatened by the advance of competitive European imperialisms. By 1900 only Siam (Thailand) had retained its full formal independence, though arguably by yielding key levers of control to the British. Siam’s success is often compared with the failure of Burma and Vietnam, conquered by Britain and France respectively in the late 19th century. Archipelago states have seldom entered this comparison, although Aceh had unique advantages in the ability to play off British and Dutch. The argument here is that the Aceh leadership did have vital agency, and made some crucial choices that could be considered mistakes from a Siam perspective. Dutch and British choices and mistakes have been better studied, but Acehnese ones also deserve to be.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the phenomenon of the ocean recited in the verses of the Quran such as, fire/energy in the ocean, two oceans that do not blend, deep darkness of the ocean, sea boundary, oceanic layers, and the abundantwealth of the sea for humanity. This article focuses first on the semantic aspects on oceanic verses as revealed and found in 42 verses in the Quran and then how these verses could be used as guidance for technological solutions. The study uses the methodof interpretation of bir rakyi or interpretation within reason using the scientific method. Modern semantic scientific methods, ontology, and the categorization of verses are used for further understanding and developing a framework for further study in developing a foundation for Islamic Marine Knowledge. The study findings indicate that the knowledge of layers in the seawater column, as mentioned in the Quran, could be a blessing for Muslims to be inspired and guided to find more discoveries and benefitsof this water layer phenomenon. These ancient manuscripts are relevant to the challenges of modern civilization, such as food and energy security and environmental control. There are clues in these oceanic verses about technological solutions to the existing and future humanitarian problems, which Muslims can use as a divine guidance.

Abstract

This paper describes several forms of therapy for spiritual well-being and physical health based on the values of sufism (tasawwuf) and spiritual exercise (riyadhah). The variety of methods contained in these therapeutic forms can be generally found within sufism in theory, but not specifically in practice. These practical experiences is thus part of a ”˜local wisdom’ (kearifan lokal) tradition deserving of study and research. Thus far, the therapies have been performed with patients who suffer from physical ailments such as heart disease, cholesterol excess, hypertension, gout, and kidney disorder, as well spiritual illnesses such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, and phobias. From the perspective of sufism, these conditions appear because of the sinful actions committed by the sufferers. These sins disturb or trouble the sufferers’ soul, causing it to acquire negative traits, blocking its ”˜link’ to God who is the Source of Peace, Happiness, and Well-being (as-Salam). The ”˜further’ a person is from God, the ”˜nearer’ the person is to problems and disease, and vice-versa. To attain physical and spiritual well-being is to become closer to God.In practice, to cure illnesses, the therapies take the following forms: Rasa Ruhani (Spiritual Sensation), Shalat and Thuma’ninah (Prayer with Concentration), and Terapi Nafas (Breathing Therapy).

Abstract

The term Islam Nusantara has been in circulation for a long time, but recently its use has gained a new significance after the 2015 Nahdlatul Ulama Congress in Jombang. Understanding of the term Islam Nusantara differs, but a common feature in all interpretations is the opinion that it is a blend of universal Islamic notions and specific regional cultural elementswith specific Indonesian characteristics, like tolerance, peacefulness and moderation. In the history of Islam in Indonesia different appreciations of Arabic as a language of Islam Nusantara exist. In this paper I want to go into the role of Arabic in Islam in Indonesia and I will argue that for a proper assessment of position of Arabic within the concept of Islam Nusantara an Arabic Literature of Indonesia should be produced.

Abstract

This paper presents semantic and symbolic analyzes of the concept of Islam Nusantara and how it evokes meaning and emotion to counter extremist and violent transnational movements, including al-Qaeda and ISIS, based on the Salafi-Wahhabi ideology. The paper is based on a religious, cultural, and political theme framework in two films produced by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU): The Blessing of Islam Nation (Oceans of Revelation: Islam as a Blessing for All Creation) and Launching the Film The Blessing Islam Nusantara. The first is based on elements of Sufism, Javanese and some other Indonesian cultures to build a vision of Islam which directly opposes the hard and non-violent Salafi-Wahhabi extremist. The latter promoted the film and the potential of the Ansor (NU) youth organization to combat extremism and terrorism. Theoretically, I rely on the insight by Goffman's observations of "framing" and "reframing" and Sperber's demonstration that symbolization is one of the cognitive processes that awaken and simultaneously communicate meaning and emotion.

Abstract

Abstract

Although Indonesia and Malaysia are now two independent nations, both countries have a lot in common, tied by a common religion, language and cultural heritage dating back centuries ago. In building a better tomorrow, both nations can benefit from each other’s rich experiences. This paper will focus on an educational institute established at the International Islamic University (henceforth, IIUM) in 2016 initially named the Centre for Malay World and Islamic Civilization and now has been transformed as the International Institute of Islamic Civilization & Malay World (henceforth, ISTAC). The institute is established to support the efforts of the university in creating an academic and intellectual field of research and studies focusing on the Malay World and Islamic civilization. This study describes the scope, major types of activities and concerns of the institute. In so doing it will identify the potential areas for collaboration (such as academic exchange, research, international conference) with relevant institutions in Indonesia.
