Abstract

This study examines the development of the ISTAID Center, an Islamic institution in Medan that has consistently distributed bulletins since 1993. The research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the institutional changes at ISTAID by tracing its historical development and analyzing the social phenomena reflected in its newsletters. Specifically, the focus is on the period from 2019-2021, exploring the central themes discussed in the bulletins. To investigate these dynamics, the research employs historical methods, including heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, complemented by descriptive analysis of the bulletin content. Data collection involved primary sources from newsletters and interviews, supplemented by secondary sources. Wilhelm Dilthey's hermeneutic theory was applied to analyze thematic relevance within social contexts. The findings suggest that the ISTAID Center has played a significant role in reflecting and addressing the social situation of Muslims during the specified period, as evidenced through the thematic content of its bulletins.

Abstract

This research examines the historical arrival of Islam in Pagaran Bira Jae Village, Padang Lawas Regency, North Sumatra, and explores its development in the realms of economics, education, and Islamic heritage. The arrival of Islam in this area is significant, as Pagaran Bira Jae was one of the first regions in Padang Lawas to embrace the religion. The spread of Islam in Pagaran Bira Jae is closely tied to trade activities, and prominent religious figures like Sheikh Jired and Malim Mudo I played a crucial role in its dissemination. The research also links the Padri War and the influence of West Sumatran and Tapanuli ulama in shaping religious growth. In terms of physical heritage, Pagaran Bira Jae and Pagaran Bira Julu house several religious institutions, including mosques, surau, and madrasahs, as well as Islamic relics such as the tomb of a saint named Jired, which bears Arabic inscriptions and Pallawa script, possibly from Gujarat, India. This study employs historical methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of the local Islamic legacy.

Abstract

This research examines the development of Dumai as a company town, where its growth is closely tied to the role of a multinational oil company, Caltex. The study addresses the question of how Caltex developed and shaped Dumai, beginning with the company's arrival in 1956. Caltex initially operated in Minas, Duri, and Rumbai but needed a strategic port to export crude oil from its fields, leading to the selection of Dumai. Using historical methods and literature review, this research chronicles Caltex’s establishment of Dumai as a key operational and distribution center. The findings reveal that since Caltex's arrival, Dumai has rapidly transformed into a company town, a development largely driven by its oil industry operations. The study concludes that Dumai’s urban growth is a direct result of Caltex's significant role in the city’s management and infrastructure.

Abstract

This article explores the history of the distinctive batik motifs from Kampong Batik Brandan, which hold unique characteristics and serve as a representation of the "Bumi Hangus" event, commemorated through the art of batik. Given that batik is a high-value art form, this led to the establishment of a venue dedicated to preserving cultural history and art in Pangkalan Brandan, known as Kampong Batik Brandan. This study employs a qualitative research method, utilizing interviews with sources and additional information collected through literature review. The findings reveal that the creation of Malay batik, particularly Brandan batik, has become iconic due to the historical narrative embedded in its motifs, symbolizing the heroic "Bumi Hangus" event known in the area. This community’s commitment to preserving history and culture inspired the establishment of Kampong Batik Brandan as a space for sustaining cultural and historical creativity.

Abstract

This research investigates the role of Islamic communities in preserving historical buildings in Sei Glugur Village, Pancur Batu Sub-district, Deli Serdang Regency. The study addresses how the Muslim community maintains its cultural identity through these preservation efforts. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected via observations, interviews with key informants, including the Village Head and building caretakers, as well as documentation. Guided by Indonesian Law No. 11 of 2010 on Cultural Heritage, the research reveals the community’s active role in utilizing and maintaining historical buildings. For example, the Sri Maha Laksmi Temple is still functional, a logistics warehouse was repurposed as a public school, and a Dutch-era house became the Al-Istiqomah Mosque. Factors such as the community’s long-term residence and hereditary ties to colonial-era workers contribute to their preservation awareness. However, some buildings, including the administration office and tobacco warehouse, remain underutilized. The study concludes that community-government partnerships are essential to optimize the use and preservation of these structures. Recommendations include allocating resources for adaptive reuse and emphasizing cultural tourism and local identity enhancement.

Abstract

This study explores the patterns of shapes and materials used in inscribed gravestones in Java and Sumatra during the 16th century. These gravestones function as cultural artifacts, reflecting the social, religious, and aesthetic dimensions of the societies of that era. Utilizing historical and archaeological methods, the research examines data from Islamic burial sites in both regions. The findings reveal diverse patterns, including geometric, floral, and Arabic calligraphic designs, which were shaped by local traditions and cross-cultural interactions within the Islamic world. The materials used, such as andesite, marble, and limestone, indicate the utilization of local resources and reflect the social status of the deceased. This study contributes to understanding the cultural and aesthetic dynamics of 16th-century Javanese and Sumatran societies, while also demonstrating the significant influence of Islam on local art and architecture.

Abstract

This study contributes to the academic discourse on student leadership by analyzing Lafran Pane’s strategic approach in advancing the Islamic Student Association (Himpunan Mahasiswa Islam, HMI) from its establishment in 1947 until his passing in 1991. The research examines the leadership strategies employed by Lafran Pane, his motivations for founding HMI, and the broader historical context that shaped his vision. This study employs a qualitative library research method, utilizing descriptive analysis of books, journals, and scholarly articles related to Lafran Pane. The findings indicate that Lafran Pane's leadership strategy was deeply rooted in his nationalistic and religious background, which he synthesized into HMI’s ideological foundation. His efforts to strengthen HMI were driven by Indonesia’s fragile post-independence condition, particularly in governance, religion, and student affairs. As a result, Lafran Pane and his colleagues formulated strategies across education, politics, religion, law, and state administration to solidify HMI’s role as a leading student organization. Ultimately, his leadership model emphasized character development, which became a fundamental trait embedded in all HMI cadres, ensuring the organization's resilience and ideological continuity.
