Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of educational psychology theories, particularly learning motivation, humanistic, behavioral, and cognitive theories, in character development and the enhancement of students’ learning motivation at Al Hidayah Basmol Islamic Boarding School. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach to gain an in-depth understanding of educational practices within the pesantren environment. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving students, teachers (ustadz), and boarding school administrators. The collected data were analyzed using interactive data analysis techniques, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that students demonstrated a high level of learning motivation, particularly in religious subjects such as Qur’an memorization (tahfiz), Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir), and moral education (akhlaq). This motivation was influenced by internal factors, including sincere intentions to worship and seek the pleasure of Allah SWT, as well as external factors such as support from teachers, parents, and a conducive boarding school environment. The teachers applied a humanistic approach through empathetic interactions and individualized guidance, while behavioral principles were implemented through educational reward and punishment systems. Furthermore, cognitive learning theory was reflected in the use of concrete instructional methods and learning styles adapted to students’ characteristics, including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic preferences. Character values such as honesty, responsibility, cooperation, and discipline were emphasized throughout the educational process. Relationships among students, teachers, and administrators were developed in a warm, family-oriented atmosphere while maintaining educational authority. The study concludes that the integration of psychological approaches creates a harmonious educational climate, strengthens students’ moral character, and sustainably enhances their learning motivation.

Abstract

Seudati Dance is one of Aceh's traditional performing arts, characterized by dynamic movements accompanied by poetic chants, rhythmic foot stomps, chest clapping, and finger snapping performed by the dancers. Throughout its historical development, this dance has served not merely as a form of artistic expression but also as an effective medium for Islamic proselytization (da'wah) and a means of fostering the spirit of resistance and collective solidarity among the Acehnese people. This study aims to examine the meanings, functions, and Islamic values embedded within Seudati Dance in the socio-cultural life of Acehnese society. Employing a qualitative design with a field research approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with Seudati instructors and performers, and documentary analysis of relevant written sources. The data were subsequently analyzed using a cultural anthropological perspective in conjunction with semiotic theory to interpret the symbolic meanings embodied in the dance movements and lyrical compositions. The findings reveal that Seudati Dance encapsulates a wide range of Islamic values, including faith (iman), moral conduct (akhlaq), discipline, solidarity, and devotion to Allah SWT. These values are symbolically represented through choreographic patterns, performance structures, and the poetic verses recited by the performers. Beyond functioning as a medium of da'wah, Seudati Dance also serves as a vehicle for social and religious education while reinforcing the cultural identity of the Acehnese community. The study concludes that Seudati Dance possesses not only profound aesthetic significance but also functions as a socio-religious instrument that facilitates the intergenerational transmission of Islamic values.

Abstract

This study aims to identify differences in learning styles between male and female students at SDN Kedoya Utara 01 West Jakarta. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving three participants, consisting of one classroom teacher and two students (one male student and one female student). Data were collected through interviews and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings indicate that learning style differences are influenced by gender. Male students tend to demonstrate a dominant kinesthetic learning style, showing greater preference for physical activities and hands-on practice. In contrast, female students tend to exhibit visual and auditory learning preferences, such as taking notes, reading, and listening to teachers’ explanations. These findings are limited to the experiences of the participants involved and do not represent all elementary school students. Several factors were identified as influencing these differences, including psychological aspects, cognitive development, learning environment, interests, and family learning habits. The study implies that teachers need to implement varied instructional strategies to accommodate diverse student learning characteristics in elementary classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the learning characteristics of children at TPQ Al-Muntaha Ali and examine their implications for teachers’ instructional methods. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach using observation, interviews, and documentation involving teachers and children aged 5–10 years. The findings indicate that children demonstrate varying levels of attention, motivation, learning pace, and participation during Qur’anic learning activities. To address these differences, teachers implement the Ummi method, provide rewards, and utilize interactive learning activities such as Islamic songs and group memorization. These strategies help maintain students’ engagement, improve learning motivation, and encourage social interaction among learners. The study concludes that understanding children’s learning characteristics is essential for designing effective and enjoyable learning environments in TPQ settings. The findings also imply that teachers need to adopt flexible and child-centered instructional approaches to optimize learning outcomes in nonformal Islamic education.

Abstract

Maimun Palace, a prominent legacy of the Deli Sultanate, embodies a remarkable synthesis of diverse architectural traditions. Although numerous studies have examined Maimun Palace, most have predominantly concentrated on its historical significance and tourism potential, while scholarly investigations specifically addressing architectural acculturation as a reflection of the cultural disposition of the Malay community remain relatively limited. This study aims to analyze the forms of architectural acculturation manifested in Maimun Palace and to elucidate how the Malay community has adapted foreign cultural influences without relinquishing its indigenous cultural identity. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research draws upon field observations, visual documentation, and an extensive review of relevant literature. The findings reveal that architectural acculturation is manifested through the incorporation of domes and horseshoe arches inspired by Middle Eastern and Mughal architectural traditions, symmetrical spatial arrangements as well as large doors and windows influenced by European architecture, and the predominance of yellow hues and distinctive Malay ornaments that signify local identity. These findings demonstrate that the Malay community selectively appropriated external cultural elements and creatively integrated them into local architectural forms. This study contributes to the broader discourse on architectural acculturation in Indonesia by positioning Maimun Palace as a compelling representation of the Malay community’s cultural openness to global influences while simultaneously preserving its distinctive local character

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the processes of architectural acculturation in Islamic architecture in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan and to identify the forms of cultural interaction that have shaped its development. Situated along the historic Silk Road, both countries experienced intensive encounters between Islam and diverse cultural traditions, including Persian, Turkic, Mongol, Chinese, and indigenous nomadic cultures. The research employs a qualitative method with a historical-cultural approach and comparative analysis. Data were collected through an extensive literature review of scholarly publications, historical documents, and relevant sources on Islamic architecture in Central Asia. The data were subsequently analyzed through data reduction, classification, historical interpretation, and cross-case comparison. The findings reveal that architectural acculturation in Uzbekistan evolved into a monumental Persian-Timurid architectural tradition characterized by grand domes, iwans, blue ceramic mosaics, and intricate geometric ornamentation, as exemplified by architectural landmarks such as Registan and Shah-i-Zinda. In contrast, architectural acculturation in Kyrgyzstan demonstrates a greater degree of adaptation to nomadic cultural traditions through the use of local materials, functional building forms, and the incorporation of Chinese architectural elements alongside Turkic traditions, particularly evident in the Dungan Mosque in Karakol. The study further demonstrates that architectural acculturation in Central Asia constitutes a dynamic and creative cultural dialogue that has produced distinctive hybrid architectural forms rooted in local identities. This research contributes to the broader scholarship on Islamic architecture while supporting ongoing efforts toward the preservation of Central Asia's rich cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transformation of the social order in the Sintang Kingdom during the process of Islamization. Employing a qualitative-analytical method with a historical approach, the research applies the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography to examine historical sources obtained through library research. The findings reveal that Islamization in the Sintang Kingdom constituted a gradual process of cultural and religious adaptation rather than an abrupt replacement of the existing social system. This transformation was reflected in the integration of Islamic values into customary law, the adoption of Islamic principles in marriage practices, the reorientation of political legitimacy and royal leadership, and the expansion of Islamic religious institutions that reshaped patterns of social interaction. Despite these changes, several local customs continued to coexist with Islamic traditions, demonstrating a process of cultural accommodation. This study contributes to the historiography of Islam in West Kalimantan by showing that Islamization in the Sintang Kingdom represented a process of social transformation characterized by negotiation and adaptation between local traditions and Islamic values, rather than a simple religious conversion.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the manifestations of Javanese cultural symbolism embedded in the architecture of the Kudus Mosque Complex and to analyze its function as a strategic medium for Islamic propagation (da'wah) during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Employing a historical research method with a qualitative approach, the study follows the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The data were collected through an extensive review of scholarly literature, including academic journals, books, and architectural documentation related to the Islamization of Java and the architectural heritage of the Kudus Mosque. The findings reveal that the Kudus Mosque Complex represents a remarkable example of cultural acculturation among Javanese, Hindu-Buddhist, and Islamic traditions, as reflected in its architectural elements, including the Hindu temple-like Kudus Minaret, the gapura bentar and paduraksa gateways, the three-tiered (tumpang tiga) roof, the soko guru (main structural pillars), the Buddhist-inspired ablution fountains, and the spatial organization of the mosque complex based on the mandala concept. These architectural features function not merely as structural components but also as symbolic expressions deliberately employed by Sunan Kudus as an effective medium for communicating Islamic teachings. Through a culturally accommodative approach that respected and incorporated local traditions, Islam was accepted peacefully by the Javanese community without eroding their pre-existing cultural identity. This da'wah strategy significantly contributed to the expansion of Islam in Kudus and fostered the emergence of distinctive religious traditions that reflect the harmonious integration of Javanese cultural values and Islamic principles. Accordingly, the Javanese cultural symbolism embodied in the architecture of the Kudus Mosque Complex stands as compelling evidence of the success of an inclusive model of Islamic propagation founded upon cultural acculturation, religious tolerance, and profound respect for local wisdom.

Abstract

This study is driven by the emerging threats of desacralization and cultural commodification facing the Meriam Puntung Site at the Maimun Palace Complex, Medan, due to mass urban tourism. Additionally, a theoretical dichotomy persists, separating colonial historical facts from the local myth of the Hikayat Putri Hijau. This study aims to analyze the historical-mythological dialectics of Meriam Puntung and map out how the Malay Deli community executes cultural Islamization regarding this narrative. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method with hermeneutic and usul al-fiqh approaches, we gathered primary data through direct field observations at Maimun Palace and in-depth interviews with the site custodian. The findings reveal that the local community successfully engaged in cultural adaptation, shifting the narrative status from ‘urf fāsid (corrupted custom) to ‘urf ṣaḥīḥ (valid custom). The magical-mystical elements of the cannon fragments are theologically transformed into symbols of nusrullah (divine intervention), the spirit of jihad fi sabilillah, and spiritual steadfastness (istiqāmah) aligned with Surah Ar-Rum verse 60. Sosiologically, the site serves a dual purpose as a social cohesion binder and a driver for the local creative economy. We conclude that to safeguard the site's economic sustainability and spiritual values from the risks of desacralization, an inclusive governance restructuring is required, driven by digital promotion and local community empowerment.

Abstract

The concept of wealth ownership in Islam has been widely discussed in the fields of Islamic economics and Qur'anic studies. However, most previous studies focus separately on the legal aspects of zakat or the economic function of wealth, while limited attention has been given to the integrated interpretation of wealth ownership based on Surah At-Taubah verses 60 and 103 using a thematic (tafsir maudhu'i) approach. This study aims to analyze the concept of wealth ownership in Islam by examining these two verses to reveal the relationship between ownership rights, social responsibility, and spiritual purification. The research employs a qualitative library research method with a thematic interpretation (tafsir maudhu'i) approach. The findings demonstrate that Surah At-Taubah verses 60 and 103 establish an integrated framework of wealth ownership in which individual ownership is recognized but remains conditional upon fulfilling social obligations through zakat. Verse 60 identifies eight categories of zakat beneficiaries, thereby defining the social redistribution mechanism of wealth, while verse 103 positions zakat as an instrument for both material redistribution and spiritual purification of wealth owners. These findings contribute to the literature by offering a comprehensive interpretation that integrates the legal, social, and spiritual dimensions of wealth ownership within a single Qur'anic framework, providing a broader understanding of the Islamic concept of property rights.
