Abstract

Abstract This research is aimed at improving teaching Writing Skills for Recount Text especially Junior High School students at SMP Negeri 2 Kota Jambi. By using qualitative method this research tries to reveal some difficulties faced by the students in writing Recount Text and giving a resolution to overcome its difficulties. The sample was taken from Eight Grade Students at SMP Negeri 2 Kota Jambi which applied a qualitative research as mentioned by Creswell (2013:334) that Qualitative research is an inquiry process of understanding based on distinct methodological traditions of inquiry that explore a social or human problems. The researcher builds complex, holistic picture, analyze words, reports detailed views of informants, and conducts the study in a natural setting. Findings of this research is considered to be good in category with the percentage of students’ level skills is 6% in very good level, 14% classified in good level, 22% classified in fair level, 28% classified in weak level and 30% classified in poor level. The students’ of writing skills in recount text that weak category, because the students have learnt recount text more than 4 meetings and the teacher have explained seriously. The findings of the research will be useful for the English teachers and the students at Junior High School in using its results as teaching strategy and learning material for the teacher and the students as well.Keywords: Recount text, writing skills, Teaching strategy, Learning materials.

Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this research is to know the students’ ability in TOEFL Structure Section tests of sixth semester at Batanghari University Academic Year 2016/2017. The sample of this research are 20 students sixth semester at Batanghari University which consist of two classes, regular A and B. The design of this research is descriptive method because the researcher just analysis the students’ ability in TOEFL Structure Section test. Based on the data analysis, the sixth semester students of English Education Study Program attained 60% which belong to fair category in Structure and Written Expression part. Based on the result of the research and the discussions that have been previously discussed in chapter IV, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in TOEFL Structure Section tests of sixth semester of English Education Study Program at Batanghari University was 60%, it belong to fair category. Keywords: Students’ Ability, TOEFL Structure Section Tests

Abstract

Abstract Curriculum is undoubtedly and inseparable part of education. The newly introduced and implemented one is called Curriculum 2013. Involving a “scientific approach”, this curriculum is expected to answer both the needs and the challenges to improve the quality of education in Indonesia.The teacher’s role is very necessary in the success of Curriculum 2013 implementation. If the teacher implements it well, the students with real good quality will be created as the objectives of Curriculum 2013. The objective of this study is to know the implementation of Curriculum 2013 by the English teachers in teaching learning planning, teaching learning process, and learning evaluation. The research used descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through questionnaire and interview. Subject of this research were five English teachers. The research shows that the English teachers in SMA N 3 Kota Jambi have implemented the teaching learning planning especially in the arrangement of lesson plan and refers to the syllabus in accordance with the Curriculum 2013 despite some obstacles that they found. The teachers have implemented teaching learning process in accordance with the Curriculum 2013 development which included in pre-activity, main activity and post activity during the teaching and learning process. In learning evaluation, the English teachers performedquite well in accordance with Curriculum 2013. Nevertheless, some teachers find obstacles in the scoring criteria.Key Words: Implementation, Curriculum 2013, English language teaching and learning, English teachers

Abstract

AbstractThis research used 40 students of English Language Education Study Program of Faculty of Teachers Training and Education of Batanghari University Jambi year 2014 as the sample. Their Microteaching score and their supervisors’ assessment of their teaching performance in teaching practice in the form of 40 questions questionnaire were analyzed using statistical method. The result of correlation test showed that there is a positive influence of Microteaching score to the teaching skills of the students. The result of the coefficient of determination is 0.419, which means that variable Microteaching influenced the teaching skills of the students by 41.9% while the other 58.1% was influenced by other factors outside the scope of the research.Keywords: Microteaching, Student teacher, Teaching skills

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara capaian hasil belajar berbicara Bahasa Inggris mahasiswa/i dengan penguasaan kosakata pada mahasiswa/i semester 2 (dua) Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Batanghari tahun ajaran 2016/2017. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kuantitatif dengan menggunakan metoda Korelasi sederhana. Sampel penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa/i semester 2 (dua) Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP, Universitas Batanghari tahun ajaran 2016/2017 yang diambil secara keseluruhan. Untuk mengumpulkan data tentang capaian hasil belajar berbicara bahasa Inggris mahasiswa/I, peneliti menggunakan nilai semester dari hasil belajar mata kuliah Speaking 2 dan tes untuk mengetahui penguasaan kosakata mahasiswa/i. Data akan diolah menggunakan Pearson Product Moment (PPM) dengan menggunakan SPSS sebagai alat untuk menghitungnya. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, didapatkan hasil bahwa terdapat korelasi yang signifikan antara capaian hasil belajar berbicara Bahasa Inggris mahasiswa/i dengan penguasaan kosakata pada mahasiswa/i semester 2 (dua) Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Batanghari tahun ajaran 2016/2017 sebesar 0.585.

Abstract

AbstractThe background of this descriptive qaulitative study was to determine the Teacher’s Roles. It also aimed to find out how teacher’s roles in motivating students in studying English. This research was conducted at Second Grade SMA N 1 Jambi. The subject of this research was an English Teachers and also students at Second Grade of SMA N 1 Jambi. To collect data, the writed employed and questionnaire and interview techniques. The interview data used structured interview. The result of this research indicated that were kinds of Teacher’s roles that applied by English Teacher.Comparising:board,textbook,picture,recording, audio-visual media,laptop, and internet. Meanwhile, the audio-visual use for record the interview itself as the media selected by English Teacher. Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this study was to find out the influence of learning motivation towards English learning achievement. This study involved 269 students of eleventh grade, the sample was 40 students of eleventh grade science six at SMA N 3 Jambi City academic year 2017/2018 and taken by random sampling with lottery. There were two variables in this study, they were learning motivation and English learning achievement with 6 total indicators. The method of this study was survey method of quantitative research. Instrument used in this study was questionnaire and documentation. The research found that mean of students motivation from the questionnaire was valued 81,6 in good category. From the findings, it showed that there was no significant influence of learning motivation towards English learning achievement. Based on the analysis of data, the value of tcount is -0,052 ˂ ttable 2,024 in significance 0,025 line 38 counted by SPSS for Windows Version 16.Keywords: Learning motivation, English learning achievement

Abstract

AbstractThis research is purposed to analyze the grammatical errors in writing made by sixth semester students at English education program of Batanghari University academic year 2016/2017. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The sample of this research is sixth semester students at English education program of Batanghari University and choosing them by using random sampling technique. The instrument of the research is test, the test is conducted two times at A and B class. Based on the result, sixth semester students often make grammatical errors in their writing, the errors are analyzed based on four categories, there are Fragment, Run-Ons, Problems with Subject-Verb Agreement, and Verb Problems. Then the researcher calculates the total errors made by sixth semester students by using the formula in order to find out the most common grammatical error. It is found that the most grammatical error made by students is Fragment which is 32,95% , and the smallest percentage of errors made by students is Verb problems which is 19,31%. Based on the finding above, the researcher can conclude that sixth semester students need to study about grammar deeper in order to avoid misunderstanding in their writing.Keywords: Grammatical errors, Writing

Abstract

AbstractStress is unsatisfactory situations of life where people want to change it for the better one with the emotions come and go with circumstances’ changing. Learning English is the process to know more about English capability which develops in a human. The purposes in this research want to types of the stress that students feel in learning English on 2rd Semester at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Batanghari University of Jambi Academic Year 2017/2018. The researcher where numerical data used in order to analyze the gathered information is called quantitative research. The population of the research is 40 students and the samples are 20 students. The data collected by questionnaire. Then, Questionnaire used Scale likert with data ordinal. The result of this research are, 20% of students stress affects sleep because students tired when who activities in campus. 34 5 high score is behavior of students, 31% is Personal habit and 15% low score is emotional. There were ways done by students to disappear their stress is pray to God. Sharing problem solve with parents, family, close friend and so on. All of students activities to lose the feeling stress. Abstract

AbstractHistorically, swearing is assumed as a form of the curse but since the sexual revolution happens in 1960, swearing not only used as a form of cursing, it can be used as a form of insult, emphasis, or even strengthen the bond between friends and co-worker. A Sociolinguistic analysis of swearing words in Celebrity read mean tweets purposes is to find out types and functions of swearing based on the meaning of the word. The data is gotten from the tweets in celebrity read mean tweets. The design of this research is qualitative research. For collecting the data, the researcher retypes all the swear words found in the celebrity read mean tweets with left the tweet without swear words, change the data from video into the word file. Then, the technique for analyzing the data was by pointing out the swear words and describing its meaning with the dictionary. The researcher has also categorized the type and function from the highest to the lowest. In the end, the result was found is sex swear words are the most frequent type of swearing and abusive swearing is the most frequent function of swearing. The conclusion is many of the cursing in religious terminology is changed with sex, and people cursing with sex swear words. Also, the gender-based swear words not only uttered based on the sex addresse, but can be also addressed by its opposite sex because the gender-based swear words can be used as the epithet for people. And the last is the swear words can be used as adjective, noun or adverb without following the grammatical rules from these three subject, because of the wide-usage of swear words.Keywords: Swearing words, Social media
