Abstract

Film, along with other literary works such as books, poetry and theater, is one of the mediums used in the contemporary day to communicate messages to society. Greta Gerwig adapted the film Little Women (2019) from the novel Little Women (1868) by Louisa May Alcott. This film shows a breakthrough over the prejudice and discrimination towards women in 19th-century cinema. The subject of female gaze has received attention since, up to this point, women have frequently only been shown as passive narrative objects, or even as the principal sexual objects in movies. Analyzing by comparing Laura Mulvey's theory regarding female gaze and male gaze through the phenomena contained in the film Little Women, which narrates the lives of five young women during their adolescent years. The image of women in the film Little Women does not appear as an object but a subject, the characters in the film Little appears strong, ambitious and optimistic. Little Women proves that Mulvey's theory of the patriarchal world is neither permanent nor obligatory.

Abstract

The research compared rascals in three Picaresque novels: Cannery Row, Candide or Optimism, and Don Quijote. It used Picaresque theories from Clarence Hugh Holman (1972), as well as Gustavo Pellon and Julio Rodriguez-Luis (1986), that specified rascal or rogue. This understanding explains how some Picaresque novels feature rascal characters who are silly, stupid, reckless, rude and have other negative traits, but they also have qualities of kindness, a good heart, and attentiveness hidden behind them. Mack and the boys, Candide, and Don Quijote are all depicted as rogues. The Picaresque element is used as a formula in the story to determine and exemplify rascal values. The researcher stated two problems related to Picaresque rascal: what are the similarities between Picaresque rascals in Cannery Row, Candide or Optimism, and Don Quijote? In addition, the purpose of this research is to identify Picaresque rascals in three objects. Furthermore, this research utilizes Ian Dey's (1993) literary criticism method, namely qualitative analysis. It is used to decipher the data of each object one by one and to obtain information about the Picaresque. The researcher then used Susan Bassnett's (1999) comparative method to compare topics. The similarities between the three objects are the results of this research. The similarities are rascals, education, instability of personality, criminality, and themes.  Keywords: Comparative Literature 1; Elements 2; Novel 3; Picaresque 4; Rascal 5

Abstract

Literary works are built from the harmony of intrinsic elements such as theme, plot, characterization, setting, point of view, style, and mandate. Plot is one of the crucial elements in a story which can combine all the elements in a story to become harmonious. From the plot, we can know the events of the character’s characteristics and the conflicts faced by the story. It can clearly describe the storyline that wants to create by the writer. Pulang by Leila S Chudori is one of the novels that have a unique plot which is created from the letter’s media. The new way of conveying the plot is called novelty.  The novelty is created for avoiding monotony in a story. Every stage of plot such as exposition, inciting moment, rising action, conflict/climax, falling action and denonement can be made to make a surprise so that the reader feels interested and curious about the next stage of plot. This is what Leila does to build her plot more interesting and unique. Leila in Pulang uses a regressive plot because the sequence of events told in fiction is not chronological, the story starts from the middle stage when Dimas Suryo is already in Paris. Besides the letter media that Leila uses in the story, she also used novelty for the renewal of the written media based on the developments of electronic media from 1965-1998. Through this kind of novelty, Leila succeeds in getting the reader to be influenced by Indonesia’s dark history which is written from a different perspective.
