This journal contains the writings of lecturers, students and linguistic practitioners from both inside and outside the campus. This journal is published twice a year, in April and October.

Abstract

This study aims at finding whether mapping technique significantly affect the students’ essay writing ability. It is Classroom Action Research (CAR) in which the subject is the second semester students of Letters Faculty of Darma Agug University. Data collection method was done in two ways because the data are in the form of qualitative and quantitative data. Based on the result of cycles implementation, it was found that the ability of students were improved from good to be better while teaching them by using mapping technique, it was from 62.85 to be 69.07. Then, in the second cycle, their score is 77.30. It can be concluded that Mapping Technique significantly affect the students’ writing ability in essay.

Abstract

Artikel ini berkaitan denganSelf-Identity Crisis in Trisha Ashley’s Every Woman for Herself. Pembahasan berfokus pada penyebab krisis jati diri oleh karakter utama dan juga dampak dan cara karakter utama dalam mengatasi krisis identitas diri. Dalam menganalisa krisis identitas diri penulis menggunakan kombinasi antara unsur intrinsik dan ekstrinsik yaitu disiplin ilmu psikologi dan sastra. Metode penelitian yang digunakan oleh penulis berdasarkan penelitian perpustakaan dan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dalam menganalisa data. Hasil temuan menunjukkan penyebab dari krisis identitas diri, dampak dari krisis identitas diri dan cara mengatasi krisis identitas diri karakter utama dalam novel. Temuan analisa krisis identitas diri menunjukkan bahwa krisis identitasberpotensi membawa dampak buruk bagi pribadi yang mengalaminya dalam kehidupan sosial mereka.

Abstract

The problems lies in this study are (1) how is the attitude towards reading of English Department students in Darma Agung University? (2) How is the attitude towards reading of English Department students in University of Darma Agung by the factors of (a) sex, (b) class type, (c) father’s education level, (d) mother’s education level, and (e) financial income level? After administered questionnaire of attitude towards reading by Gomleksiz (2004) to 46 students of English Department in Darma Agung University, there are findings found. First, the attitude towards reading of English Department students in Darma Agung University is mere positive for the average score of the 46 students is 143, 5 by the condition of the highest score is 172 and the lowest score is 111. Second, personal attributes and environmental factors are determine differences, the male students is mere positive in attitude towards reading by the average score of 145,4 than the female students by the average score of 142,6. In Class types, morning class students are having mere positive attitude towards reading by the average score of 147 than the evening class by the average score of 138,4. Fathers’ and mothers’ education level is also determining differences. However, mothers’ education level is affect linearly to the students attitude towards reading; the higher the mothers’ education level the mere positive the students’ attitude towards reading, but fathers’ education level is not affect the students attitude towards reading linearly. The last of the environmental factors, financial income level is linearly affect the students’ attitude towards reading; the higher the students’ financial income level the mere positive their attitude towards reading.

Abstract

Studying English for at least seven years does not necessarily make students proficient in practicing English language learned include speaking. When the ability to use English orally has become one of the factors to get a good knowledge, economic independence and job security, it is deemed necessary to find out what problems are the students have to speaking English in order to build strategies to overcome the problems to students' speaking ability in the future. Thirty persons from second semester students of English department at University of Darma agung Medan participated in this study. The data regarding students’ English speaking were collected through questionnaire and speaking test. This study found that students experienced problems to speaking English. It was also revealed that the major problems of the students to speaking English due to the lack of effective transition of knowledge into practice which is caused by the lack of English basic knowledge and the influence of first language used, the disadvantaged socioeconomic factor, non-English classroom instructions, and English speaking anxiety.

Abstract

This study is to find out whether roundtable technique significantly affects for the students’ mastery of writing a descriptive text of eighth grade students at SMP Swasta GKPI Pamen. Roundtable Technique is learning technique where the students take turn in their team by generating their responses, solving problems, or making a contribution to a project. It was conducted by using experimental quantitative research. The population of this study is the eighth grade students of junior high school SMP Swasta GKPI Pamen. The writer takes 40 students as the sample and they are devided into two groups by using random sampling. The first group was VIII-1 as Experimental class which is taught by implementing Roundtable technique. While the second group is VIII-2 as control class which is taught by using conventional method. Oral test is used as the instrument of collecting the data. This test consists of two types, namely pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The calculation shows t-observed that is 2.307 is higher than t-table that is 1.686 at the level significance (p: 0.05) with the degree of freedom (df) 38. It means that Ha is accepted, therefore it is concluded that Roundtable technique significantly affect on students’mastery of writing a descriptive text of eleventh grade students at SMP Swasta GKPI Pamen. It is suggested for the students of English department as source of valuable knowledge and information when conducting a research related to the study. It is also suggested that teachers of English subject should implement Roundtable technique as one of alternative in teaching Writing to increase students’ writing ability.

Abstract

This research dealst with Code Mixing Used by Teenagers in Facebook. The objective of the research was to find out the types of code mixing used by teenagers in their Facebook accounts status. The data analyzed were teenagers’ Facebook accounts status dated from 1st May until 31st July, 2019. The writer analyzed and interpreted the data based on Hoffman’s theory and qualitative design of research. The result of the study showed that there were three types of code mixing used by teenagers in their Facebook accounts status dated from 1st May until 31st July, 2019 based on Hoffman’s which were intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing and involving a change in pronunciation code mixing.
