Abstract

Background: The root canal wall becomes coated with a smear layer predominantly composed of organic and inorganic matter, debris and bacteria during root canal instrumentation. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid (EDTA) are effective in removing the smear layer and they perform as lubricants during root canals instrumentation. The aim of this study was to analyze the efficacy of NaOCl and EDTA as lubricant during root canal preparation on apical third of root-canal wall.Method: Thirty-two premolars were all decoronated. All samples were randomly divided into 2 groups. All groups were instrumented with rotary instrument from #10.04 to #35.04 file. One group was irrigated with 17% EDTA and the other with 5.25% NaOCl. Then the teeth were dried, split into 2 halves and evaluated by 2 examiners under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at the apical third of the root-canal wall at 1000x magnifications. Data was statistically analyzed using Mann-Whitney test.Result: The result showed that 17% EDTA produced significantly higher cleanliness on apical third of root-canal wall compared to 5.25% NaOCl (p < 0.05).Conclusion: EDTA 17% was able to clean apical third of root-canal wall better than NaOCl 5,25%.

Abstract

Background: Calcium hydroxide (Ca(0H)2) has a beneficial biological properties as intracanal medicament. However, the direct contact of Ca(OH)2 with the root canal dentine can affect the physical properties and increasing the root fracture risk of treated tooth. This study aimed to determine the effect of application periods Ca(OH)2 mix with glycerin and chlorhexidine digluconate 2% on the micro hardness of root canal dentine.Method: Thirty extracted mandibular first premolars were use in this study. The crowns of the teeth were removed and the canals were prepared with crown- down technique. Each root was sectioned transversely on cervical third of 5 mm thickness and then they were mounted on acrylic resin. The specimens were randomly divided into 6 groups of 5 root segments each. In group IA, IB and IC Ca(0H)2 — glycerin mix were applicated during in a row two weeks contact, four weeks contact and twelve weeks contact. Whereas in group IIA, IIB and IIC Ca(0H)2 - chlorhexidine digluconate 2% mix were applicated during in a row two weeks contact, four weeks contact and twelve weeks contact. During the treatment period, the subjects were kept in an incubator at 37 ° C. Vickers Indenter Microhardness Tester was used to measure the micro hardness of root canal dentine after direct contact with Ca(OH)2 paste.Result: The results showed that the contact periods were effected on dentin micro hardness, while the type of vehicle was not significant. Conclusion: Greatest dentin micro hardness value shown on the application Ca(OH)2 – glycerine paste during two weeks, while the smallest value shown on the application pasta Ca(OH)2 -glycerine during twelve weeks.

Abstract

Background: Xylotrupes gideon is a harmful insect because it damages the shoots of coconut trees. Xylotrupes gideon has begun to be used in the form of nanochitosan as an alternative in dentistry. The addition of nanochitosan to Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) material is a modification to improve the properties of GIC, such as surface roughness caused by acidic conditions (critical saliva pH). Nano-sized chitosan is able to increase stability and better absorption, thus inhibit demineralization and increase tooth hardness. This research aimed to investigate the effect of nanochitosan from Xylotrupes gideon on the surface roughness of GIC at critical saliva pH.Method: This research type conducted is an experimental laboratory. Samples of 10 mm (height) x 2 mm (diameter) divided into 2 groups, (A) Unmodified GIC (control group), (B) GIC modified with 10% nanochitosan solution. Samples of the treatment and control group are stored in the incubator at 370C for 1 hour before early surface roughness testing and continued in critical saliva pH (5,5) for 7 days in the incubator before the final test. The surface roughness tester using sutrotonic s-100 series.Result: There was an increase in the surface roughness of conventional GIC by 0.133 µm and GIC nanochitosan by 0.122 µm. The results of the paired t-test before and after immersion in the two groups showed that there was a significant difference (p <0.05) between conventional GIC and nanochitosan GIC. The independent t-test results showed that there was no significant difference (p> 0.05) between the nanochitosan GIC and conventional GIC.Conclusion: Nanochitosan can reduce the surface roughness value of GIC at critical saliva pH, although there is no significant difference to conventional GIC.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: COVID-19 pandemic is a new challenge for dentist. Doctor-patients contact, aerosol formed during treatment, and contact with contaminated instruments are the transmission route for COVID-19 infection. Several guidelines and suggestion regarding infection control measures have been released, but the standard protective measures in daily clinical work are not effective enough to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Aim To provide an overview of the measures that can be made in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in dental health services Method: Systematic literature review used literature search methods in electronic databases: Google Scholar, Science Direct, and PubMed. The keywords were “COVID-19 and dental practice” and “dental practice during COVID-19”. The inclusion criteria for selection of scientific articles were years of publication from January 2020 to October 2020, published in English and full paper available. Out of 44 articles that have been screened, nine articles have been included in this reviewResult: The nine articles that were collected have already pointed out some necessary measures. Patients screening and triage are the first steps in selecting emergency cases, minimal invasive procedure are the principle in every dental treatment, and the use or personal protective equipment for dentist and team is an absolute requirement before performing any dental treatment. Conclusion: Protecting the oral environment through dental checks-up with preventive measure is important during the pandemic.

Abstract

Background: Orthodontic tooth movement is caused by mechanichal forces that cause pseudo-inflammation with the result that FGF (Fibroblast Growth Factors) was activated. The combination of SHED (Stem Cell From Human Exfoliated Deciduous Theeth) and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) hydrogels can affect the formation of fibroblast in the alveolar bone regeneration. The purpose of this study is the effect determination of SHED and PRP hydrogels for fibroblast formation in alveolar bone regeneration in wistar rats.Method: An experimental study was held using post-test only control group design. There were four groups, namely the PRP hydrogel group, the SHED hydrogel group, the SHED and PRP hydrogel group, and the povidone iodine group (n=8) treated with orthodontic tooth movement. Their mandibular tissue was made as histologycal slide, and the FGF expression were observed microscopically with 100x magnification. The data analyzed by ANNOVA and LSD test.Result: There was a significant effect of the combination of SHED and PRP hydrogel in ordering fibroblast in alveolar bone regeneration by ANNOVA test 0.001 (<0.05). This is because SHED and PRP are able to stimulate FGF expression through external stimulation. Conclusion: It concluded that the combination of SHED and PRP hydrogel affected fibroblast formation on alveolar bone regeneration in wistar rats
