Abstract

This paper investigates the legitimate authority of the Prophetic Sīrah (biography) as a source of legal and ethical deductions within Islamic jurisprudence. While classical scholarship unanimously considers the Sīrah an essential component of the Sunnah (Prophetic tradition), its independent capacity to serve as a foundational basis for deriving rulings has been a subject of nuanced analysis. By distinguishing Sīrah from Sunnah, this study critically examines the extent to which the Sīrah can function as a source of normative guidance. Employing a qualitative methodology grounded in library research, the paper utilizes descriptive, analytical, and comparative approaches to scrutinize classical and contemporary scholarship. The findings demonstrate that Prophetic Sīrah, beyond its narrative value, possesses significant legislative weight in contextualizing and applying Islamic principles to the evolving realities of Muslim life. In the context of modern complexities, the Sīrah not only reinforces Muslim identity but also provides actionable frameworks for ethical and legal reasoning. This research contributes to the broader discourse on Islamic legal theory by reaffirming the integrative role of Sīrah alongside the Sunnah in shaping jurisprudential thought and moral conduct.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education learning in majelis taklim plays a strategic role in shaping the character and spirituality of the Muslim community. However, the effectiveness of this learning process still faces challenges, particularly in the development of comprehensive and applicable teaching materials. The materials delivered are often textual and theoretical, lacking contextual relevance and failing to accommodate the diverse needs of participants. This study aims to develop a concept for Islamic Religious Education learning materials through a holistic-integralistic approach that encompasses cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects. The research methodology employed includes a literature review and observations of several majelis taklim. The holistic-integralistic approach is implemented through a systematic instructional design framework known as the ADDIE model, which consists of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. This model is applied by incorporating andragogical principles and considering socio-cultural aspects. The findings indicate that this approach fosters a more meaningful and applicable learning experience. Additionally, the delivery of teaching materials becomes more contextual, aligning with the needs of learners and the challenges of modern life.

Abstract

This paper offers a critical analysis of modern materialist philosophy from an Islamic perspective. It argues that the spread of materialist thought—emerging prominently in the 19th century with ideologies like positivism, evolutionism, Marxism, pragmatism, and logical positivism—has fundamentally reshaped global intellectual discourse, often at the expense of metaphysical and spiritual values. The authors contend that these philosophies, while presenting themselves as “scientific” and “rational,” are unified in their denial of divine revelation, their reduction of reality to material phenomena, and their promotion of atheism. Drawing from the works of influential Western thinkers such as Karl Marx, Ernst Haeckel, and others, the paper highlights how materialism became the philosophical backbone of modern secular ideologies, particularly in education, politics, and economics. In contrast, the Islamic worldview maintains that reality encompasses both the seen and unseen, and that true knowledge must integrate reason, revelation, and empirical observation. The authors also reference contemporary Muslim scholars who have critically engaged with these ideologies, proposing methodological reforms in Islamic theology to better respond to the epistemological challenges posed by materialist philosophies. Ultimately, the paper asserts that modern materialism not only contradicts core Islamic tenets about God, man, and the universe but also leads to moral and existential crises by excluding transcendental values. Thus, a comprehensive Islamic critique is essential not only to defend the integrity of Islamic thought but also to contribute constructively to global philosophical debates

Abstract

This article explores human development as a holistic process grounded in the Qur’an’s maqāṣid (higher objectives), moving beyond modern approaches that often center narrowly on material and economic indicators. While development thinking shifted in the late twentieth century to focus more directly on human welfare—emphasizing education, fair distribution, and protection of rights—such frameworks emerged late and have struggled to prevent rising poverty, unemployment, and inequality. By contrast, this study describes the Islamic perspective as reflected in the Qur’an, which integrates spiritual, ethical, and social dimensions of development, and then deduces how these maqāṣid lay the foundation for a balanced model of human flourishing. Drawing on classical and contemporary scholarship, including the contributions of Ibn ʿĀshūr, Riḍā, al-Qaraḍāwī, and al-ʿAlwānī, the article outlines core objectives such as refining character, protecting human dignity and life, promoting knowledge and freedom, ensuring justice, and affirming humanity’s role as khulafāʾ (vicegerents) on earth. The study further highlights practical examples from the life of the Prophet in Madinah—such as the establishment of brotherhood, organizing economic and social life, prohibiting ribā (usury), and safeguarding public welfare—that demonstrate how these objectives were translated into practice. Ultimately, the article concludes that the Qur’anic maqāṣid offer a comprehensive, ethically anchored framework for human development that remains profoundly relevant today, emphasizing that genuine progress must harmonize spiritual purpose, moral integrity, and collective responsibility to achieve sustainable human well-being

Abstract

Romantic poetry offers a distinctive way to explore love, longing, and emotional depth. The both poems of Ilya Abu Madi’s "Qatrat-al-Tall" (The Dewdrop) and Raghunath Choudhary’s "Hepah" (Desire) are romantic poems that shed lights on these kinds of themes through distinct perspectives. Abu Madi’s poem depicts love as a philosophical mystery, demanding investigation beyond appearances and highlighting romance as a fleeting but meaningful experience, while Choudhary’s poem celebrates sensory devotion, where love is deeply connected with nature and impacts the reader in passionate nostalgia, trying to discover the presence of love in the breeze, sunlight, and ocean. This study analyses how both poets expressed love using symbolism and poetic imagery including their brief biography. One is via thoughtful introspection while the other is through sensory engagement. Though they have cultural differences, but they share the same message like love has an emotional resonance which is universal, divine, and transformative.

Abstract

The historical narrative surrounding the conflict between Amīr Mu‘āwiyah (d. 680 AD) and ‘Alī bin Abī Ṭālib (d. 661 AD) has long been cloaked in controversial debate. The former’s refusal to pledge allegiance to the latter stemmed from his demand for Qiṣāṣ (Retribution) following the assassination of ‘Uthmān bin ‘Affān (d. 656 AD). Believing that Ḥaḍrat ‘Alī’s ascension to the Khilāfah (Caliphate) did not adequately address the grievances, Amīr Mu‘āwiyah withheld his adherence, viewing it as a means to accentuate for Qiṣāṣ. This denial inflamed tensions and fueled the broader dispute between them, underscoring an intense impact on the political landscape of the Muslims in the early decades.  Drawing upon a range of sources, while employing critical textual analysis, this paper attempts to offer a broader understanding of the events that occurred during this crucial period with their deeper historical context. Through scrupulous revision of the authentic historical accounts, this study, primarily, aims to scrutinize the growing accusation labeling Amīr Mu‘āwiyah as a rebel owing to his stand against Ḥaḍrat ‘Alī, and seeks to evaluate the validity of such a budding narrative about his intentions. Moreover, it shall endeavor to shed light on Amīr Mu‘āwiyah’s role and motivations, ultimately contributing to a historically exact portrayal of his position. It shall also enrich scholarly discourse and foster a more nuanced understanding of early Muslim history.

Abstract

The Ikhwani sect represents one of the most influential reformist movements within Chinese Islam, emerging in the late nineteenth century under the leadership of Ma Wanfu (1849–1934). Inspired by Wahhabi ideas encountered during his studies in Mecca, Ma Wanfu sought to purify Chinese Islam by calling for a return to the Quran and Hadith while opposing syncretic practices such as Sufi saint veneration and Confucian-influenced rituals. This paper investigates the historical evolution, doctrinal foundations, and sociopolitical adaptation of the Ikhwani through three major phases: its ideological formation (1890s–1918), institutional consolidation under the Ma warlords (1918–1949), and pragmatic accommodation under Communist governance (post-1949). Drawing upon archival sources, mosque records, and key doctrinal texts, the study employs the theoretical frameworks of religious institutionalism and adaptive resistance to examine how the Ikhwani maintained theological integrity while surviving successive regime changes. The paper argues that the sect’s quietist orientation, pedagogical investment, and ritual standardisation provided a sustainable model of religious resilience. By comparing the Ikhwani to other reformist movements in the Islamic world, this study highlights the unique pathways through which Islam adapted to the Chinese sociopolitical context.
