Abstract

The efforts and conservation actions are needed to obtain a clean water for consumption. One of such efforts is interpreting the traditions of indigenous peoples, which are directly related to the concept of nature conservation. This study aims to identify and describe the meaning and geographical aspects of the barong wae ritual practice of the Manggarai indigenous people in the context of preserving the water environment. This research was a qualitative descriptive study with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. Results show that local wisdom in the form of the barong wae ritual contains knowledge, ethics, values, and norms that are directly related to the efforts to protect the water environment. This is reflected in the meaning of the symbols, the selection of locations, and the involvement of indigenous peoples as a form and means of human interaction with the environment, especially the water environment. In conclusion, local cultural values, ethics, moral standards, and norms embodied in symbols, locations, and community involvement in the implementation of barong wae cultural rites must be preserved for the survival and sustainability of the natural environment, especially the water environment, for the next generation.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the hidden narrative in the slametan of the ulur-ulur ritual at Telaga Buret, Sawo Village, Campurdarat District, Tulungagung Regency. In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the long sequences of ulur-ulur rituals were summarized by only conducting slametan. This indicates that the main foundation of the ulur-ulur ritual is slametan. To find the core ideology of slametan, this study employed the ethnographic approach. Data were obtained through participatory research and in-depth interview. The collected data were then transcribed and analyzed using related theories. This research shows that in slametan, syncretic narratives are beautifully woven into the ritual. An assortment of narratives from Islam and other religions or beliefs is represented in the offerings served during the ritual. Each offering is addressed specifically to a particular supernatural entity through ujub. This harmonious assortment shows that the Javanese people have a high degree of adaptability when it comes to adjusting their religious practices to inevitable social changes.

Abstract

This article report the study of traditional dance in Siguntur Dharmasraya, West Sumatra. Marhasnida, a cultural activist from Nagari Siguntur, created the toga dance. This article explains how the dance was created, developed, and performed from stage to stage and passed on to the younger generation for preservation. This historical research observed and analyzed the actions of an individual closely related to the development of toga dance. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and tracing of personal archives pertaining to various aspects of the dance, including its history and movements. This research found (1) that Marhasnida has been involved in the preservation of toga dance since 1990; (2) that toga dance has been performed in various local, national, and international performances; and (3) that toga dance preservation involves educational institutions and students at the school where Marhasnida teaches, which also serves as a forum for fostering young dancers who will preserve the dance. Findings indicate that traditional activities are not only preserved and passed on to the millennials by formal institutions established by the government, but also by an individual who is also a local activist and culture expert. However, this study also shows that the involvement of formal institutions such as schools is quite effective for attracting young talents to preserve and practice regional arts. However, not all art activists are teachers and have access to formal education. For this reason, an educational curriculum that can stimulate actions to explore cultural values and local wisdom by providing flexibility for teachers to create, innovate, and collaborate with practitioners is a commendable measure.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of coming out as part of queer narrative within Shimanami Tasogare (2015), a manga by Kamatani Yūki. Although coming out has become an important concept within LGBTQ, previous related research tends to see coming out as a one-time achievement. This study analyses the significance of coming out in Shimanami Tasogare by using the queer narrative approach. This study applies Klein et al.’s theory (2015) which argues that coming out is a dynamic and non-linear social process. This study uses text analysis and compositional interpretation (Rose, 2001) as research method. Results show that coming out plays a significant role for the characters who have done it for two reasons. First, coming out is a way for LGBTQ individuals to remove the compulsion to hide their non-heteronormative identity. Second, coming out is also a way to educate people who misunderstand or have misconceptions about LGBTQ. This study found that Shimanami Tasogare has succeeded in depicting the complexity of LGBTQ identity without trapping itself within the traditional queer narrative which assumes that coming out is a linear process.

Abstract

Totemism is a belief in an animal or plant’s guiding spirit that is linked to a person’s character and destiny. Totemism manifests itself in tattoos as body decoration and symbols of hope, such as Yakuza tattoos (irezumi). This research aims to reveal the representation and meaning of totemistic irezumi worn by three Yakuza characters (Kazuma Kiryuu, Akira Nishikiyama, and Goro Majima) in two Yakuza-themed game series: Yakuza 0 (2015) and Yakuza Kiwami 1 (2016). These games provided the primary data in the form of images and conversations. Ricoeur’s hermeneutic theory was applied to examine the data, along with qualitative descriptive and interpretative methods. Analysis revealed differences between the meaning of tattoos shown in the Yakuza games and those existing in the real world. Kiryuu’s dragon tattoo represents the burden of responsibility; Nishiki’s koi tattoo represents the burden of being a great individual; and Majima’s tattoo represents an emotional burden. Thus, the entities shown in those irezumi can be said to represent psychological burden and influence their bearers’ as personal totems.

Abstract

This article focuses on the volcanic eruptions in Priangan, West Java, in the first half of the nineteenth century. Even though volcanic eruptions are natural occurrences, their impacts on human lives are viewed as historical events. While such disasters caused damage and misfortune to those directly affected, some people may also use them as a source of inspiration to seek knowledge. Moreover, eruptions occurring in an area were, to a certain extent, considered as a threat to the colonial authorities. Using contemporary news, official reports, and diaries, this research analyzes the relationship between natural events and its surrounding social and political landscapes. Such relationships are examined primarily to show that the eruptions might inspire the development of science while becoming a setting for human tragedy. It also examines how the colonial government responded to these catastrophic events within the framework of colonial political economy. Finally, this article argues that scientists and colonial administrators actually took several actions to ensure the continuity of colonialism through volcanic science and to maintain the availability of economic resources. In conclusion, the disasters that occurred in the colonial period did not only precipitate more scientific explorations but also provided another perspective on the dynamics of colonialism in the Dutch East-Indies.
