Abstract

This study explores the life of Rosihan Anwar, a famous Indonesian historian and journalist. He can be considered a historian because he applied historical methods in several of his works. As a historian, he had an exceptional ability to collect oral sources by means of interviews with the actors in or eyewitnesses to the event. Despite limitations in terms of the use of written sources because journalists had a tight deadline for publishing their articles, Rosihan was able to produce historical writings with strong rhetoric and to present information in an interesting way, making them easily understood by a wide audience. As a history recorder during the Indonesian Independence Revolution era, he produced many works which contributed to Indonesian historiography, which were written using an alternative historical writing approach known as “small history”.

Abstract

This article discusses the origin of the Ketoprak Dor art in Paya Tumpi Kampong, Kebayakan District, Central Aceh. This form of art is interesting because it demonstrates that change or development of an art does not only arise from the artist’s own creative processes, but it may also occur due to external factors. Thus, a qualitative research approach with descriptive analysis method was used to investigate this cultural phenomenon. This research proves that Ketoprak Dor originated from Deli, North Sumatra. There were two events that prompted its emergence. First, in 1950s, a Ketoprak Dor group from Deli performed in Bies District, Central Aceh. Second, in the same decade, a group of people from Medan migrated to Bies and brought a set of Ketoprak Dor musical instruments and wanted to sell it there. However, the Bies residents could not purchase it, but the Paya Tumpi residents accepted the deal. Thus, they formed a Ketoprak Dor art group named “Langeng Madio Utomo”, which was later changed to “Sanggar Ketoprak Rahayu Cipto Rukun” in the following decade. Even though they had been on hiatus for three decades from 1990s, in the past few years the group has been active again. It can be concluded that external factors can bring about changes in an art’s purposes, form, style, and meaning.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the development of ancient Muslim settlements on the west coast of Aceh based on the findings of Islamic gravestones at the Binanga site in Subulussalam City, Aceh. This site is very unique, it is located inland and right on the banks of the Singkel River, which is connected to the highlands of Sumatra. There are 131 Islamic gravestones, and their shapes vary greatly. The results of the morphological analysis show that the gravestones were divided into two groups: Aceh gravestones (batu Aceh) and Barus gravestones (nisan Barus). There are no biographical inscriptions carved on the gravestones, however, the morphological analysis shows that these gravestones date from the 18th to 19th centuries AD. These tombstones indicate that Muslim communities began to settle permanently in the interior of Aceh's west coast in the 1700s. The emergence of these settlements is related to the migration of people from the highlands of Sumatra to the west coast of Aceh, which was motivated by the development of international trade centered in Singkel and its surroundings since the 18th and 19th centuries AD. Thus, the tombstone on this site is very important because gave the clear picture to understand the emergence of Muslim settlements on the west coast of Aceh in the past.

Abstract

The spice route has become a national discourse in the context of strengthening the Indonesian nation's maritime cultural identity. As one of the big nations, the archipelago was once a cross-national melting pot in the context of hunting and trading spices on an international scale. After all, spices were the prima donna commodity of their time, which raised the name of the archipelago to the international trade stage. This research was conducted to find out the history of the spice route in one of the archipelago regions, especially in Aceh. After all, Islam and the spice trade have become a part of the civilization of Aceh and the Archipelago. This research is a qualitative research, with an historical and anthropological method approach, in order to understand firsthand how the description of the spice trade route in Aceh, especially the western and southern regions of Aceh. The results showed that the West and South Coasts of Aceh had become the locus of one of the archipelago's spice trading centers from the late 18th century to the end of the 19th century AD. The progress of the spice trade was marked by the emergence of ports on the west coast, including the old Singkel port, Trumon , Susoh, Kuala Batu, Meulaboh, to Bandar Rigaih. The presence of the Trumon Kingdom, which was built from the rapid trade in spices and pepper, and the weakening influence and power of the Aceh Darussalam Kingdom, shows that there is a contestation of power between the Aceh Darussalam Kingdom, Dutch Colonial and local powers on the West coast. Among the spice commodities on the west coast of Aceh include; pepper, cloves, nutmeg, resin, and silk. However, the presence of spices on the West coast of Aceh contributed to the emergence of power contestation between the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam, the Netherlands and the kingdoms on the West coast of Aceh, especially in the context of power struggles and spice commodities.

Abstract

The sima inscription is an edict issued by the king as a gift given to certain parties. One of the reasons for its bestowment is as a reward to those who have shown him loyalty. This paper studies the forms of loyalty shown by the Ancient Javanese People to the king and the factors that influenced it. The study aims to give an understanding of the relationship that existed between the Ancient Javanese people and the king in the XIII–XV Centuries AD. The results of this research provides new insight for the effort to reconstruct the life of the Ancient Javanese people. The method used in this study consists of data collection, data analysis, and interpretation. Based on this series of studies, it can be determined that there are multiple forms of loyalties shown by the Ancient Javanese people to the king and multiple factors that influenced its formation.

Abstract

Our article describes the relationship between museums and schools as a policy of democratisation of French culture, a policy that has encouraged the ministry of education and the ministry of culture to work together in designing arts and culture learning programmes in museums and in schools. The case study of the implementation of the national policy of democratisation of culture by the municipality of La Rochelle is an important consideration that can help us to understand how the locality of public policy implementation in France can contribute specific characteristics to the cultural development and management of museums and schools. Arts and culture learning in museums aims to bring students into direct contact with museum collections. The aim is to give students real-life experiences, encouraging them to easily express or talk about them, both in the classroom and beyond. Learning in museums is designed to build sensitivity to emotions and impressions that arise when dealing directly with museum objects, looking at the shape, colour or material of museum objects. Students will comment and express their experiences. This is the virtue of the learning process.

Abstract

This article discusses the importance of government and community collaboration in the preservation and potential use of Siak Sri Indrapura Cultural Heritage Area. It is not easy to carry out preservation as mandated by the law, because in practice various problems may arise, especially those related to the area’s use. The purpose of this study is to integrate interpretations concerning the importance of government and community collaboration in the preservation of cultural heritage areas and those concerning their potential use by taking into account socio-cultural and economic values. This study was designed using a convergent qualitative and quantitative approach (convergent mixed methods approach) to collect data. Those data were then analyzed separately, and the results were then compared, resulting in whether findings in the form of mutual information become normalized or, conversely, do not normalize each other. This study identified the need for community participation in compiling significant values of the heritage and the similarity between government’s interpretation and public perception of socio-cultural and economic values.

Abstract

Time is a complicated object of study because understanding time is closely related to periodization, history, and memory. Film is a medium for presenting manifestations of motion and time in visual products that can be captured by human senses. Tenet (2020) is a film that displays temporal dimensions in terms of both creative ideas and packaging through its cinematography and narrative structure. Tenet presents the idea of overlapping time consciousness of the past, present, and future. A revolving door machine in the film is used to signify the paradox of determinism or the condition of characters suffocated in a time loop. The form of aporia or deterministic indecision experienced by those characters reflects the dialogue of human consciousness on the temporal dimension. Tenet presents a debate on two human perspectives on or attitudes towards time, namely the modern and the postmodern, which are represented by the protagonist and Sator. From a more ideological standpoint, the film is full of ambivalences when presenting the dialogues and human attitudes towards time. This is in line with the perspective of metamodernism, namely a continuous pursue of the impossible. All of the actions taken by the protagonist and Sator will eventually prove to be impossible because they are trapped in an endless time loop

Abstract

This article discusses the early development of rijsttafel and Dutch East Indies restaurants in the Netherlands during colonial period between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. The study takes a closer look at the early development of rijsttafel and Dutch East Indies restaurants in the Netherlands during the colonial period, as well as the role of actors in introducing rijsttafel and Dutch East Indies ethnic food in the Netherlands. This study aims to provide an alternative way of studying the history of culinary and gastronomic development and the influence of Dutch East Indies culture in the Netherlands. The historical sources used are newspapers, cookbooks, and guidebooks on Dutch East Indies cuisine, gastronomy, and restaurants in the Netherlands in the colonial period. The development of rijsttafel and Dutch East Indies restaurants in the Netherlands demonstrates the strong influence of colonial cultural imperialism in diversifying flavors in Europe in the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries. The early trajectory of rijsttafel in the Netherlands also shows that culinary dishes and gastronomic cultures from colonies such as the Dutch East Indies can be adapted and modified into various flavors that suit the tastes of Dutch society.

Abstract

A museum plays a central role in conserving cultural heritage. Hence, conserving museum collections is pivotal for preserving the values of the collection. The museum of National Awakening has a potential national collection that requires curative conservation due to its damaged condition, i.e., Sultan Thaha Robes. However, the conservation effort lacked written and visual documentation of the collection due to the collection's urgency, causing it difficult for conservators to access the conservation-related information. This paper presents a critical review of conservation stages performed on Sultan Thaha Robes while suggesting a complete, systematic conservation solution based on the theoretical collaboration of textile conservation experts.
