Abstract

This article critically examines the complex interactions between Javanese identity, colonial influence, and karawitan (traditional Javanese music) through an autoethnographic methodology. By introducing the innovative concept of the ‘body as archive,’ the research explores how embodied experiences function as repositories of cultural memory and resistance. It deconstructs colonial interventions in karawitan, uncovering how documentation, standardization, and systematic recording processes altered the transmission and cultural significance of the art form. The research traces the transition from oral traditions to written documentation, highlighting the commodification of Javanese artistic expressions and the emergence of cultural stereotypes. A central focus of this study is the exploration of embodied knowledge as a decolonial strategy. By emphasizing local wisdom and personal narratives, the article demonstrates how performative practices such as karawitan can serve as potent sites for cultural reclamation and identity negotiation. The analysis ultimately challenges conventional perspectives on cultural preservation, contending that evolving artistic traditions have the potential to reshape and reimagine Javanese identity in a postcolonial context.

Abstract

This short article attempts to apply Adrian B. Lapian's theory of three maritime community groups (Sea People, Pirates, & Sea Kings) in the context of the Srivijaya Kingdom other than the Sulu Islands which are the focus of Lapian's discussion. This article analyzes the involvement of the king in the recruitment of Pirates and the organizational structure of Pirates and Sea Kings in Srivijaya. Meanwhile, the Sea People group in the Srivijaya Kingdom is analyzed here by identifying their roles in trade and cooperation with Sea Raiders and Sea Lords according to Adrian B. Lapian's previous theory from the case study of the Sulu Sultanate. It was found that the novelty of the study was that there was a comparison of cases in the Riau-Bangka Belitung Islands Sea Region with the Sulawesi Sea and Sulu Islands in terms of the loyalty of the Sea People in Sulu and Srivijaya (Riau-Bangka Islands). Likewise, the organizational structure of the Sea Kings and the Pirate recruitment system in both regions had significant differences. This study uses a historical method that has four stages, namely heuristics, criticism, verification, and historiography.

Abstract

The new direction of ethnic Chinese citizenship politics in Indonesia is marked by a communal revival in non-governmental organizations, media and schools. The past of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia is indeed full of crises, but the future of Chinese citizens in Indonesia really depends on the policies of each ruling regime towards their group. The new direction of ethnic Chinese citizenship politics in Indonesia must be understood as a process of psychological rehabilitation for sentiment and antipathy towards China in the past. The interpretation of social reality and the social movements they carry out on a local scale should be appreciated and appreciated rationally and sympathetically. The government's efforts to create democratic change require much greater effort. Perhaps with the development of democratization in Indonesia, residents of Chinese descent, especially in Jakarta and Manado, will feel that there is security stability, economic growth and equal access to work so that social justice for all is truly achieved to the maximum. Thus, the central government needs to encourage the involvement of Chinese citizens in the world of local government politics at both the executive and legislative levels so that they can find the best way to deal with ethnic and religious tensions in our democratic political system.

Abstract

This study examines the role of internalized misogyny in sexual violence used as a weapon of war. Misogyny in patriarchal cultures fosters hatred towards women, facilitating sexual violence in armed conflicts. Cases in the Congo, Rwanda, Ukraine, and Yugoslavia demonstrate how sexual violence is systematically employed to demean and destroy women. Through a feminist critical approach and qualitative analysis, this research reveals that sexual violence in war is often not recognized as a weapon of war due to the inferior position of women in patriarchal societies, being merely seen as ordinary crimes despite being systematic and structured human rights violations. Findings indicate that women in war experience layered violence based on their gender, ethnicity, and nationality. Internalized misogyny normalizes sexual violence in war. Therefore, feminist-oriented laws and policies are required to acknowledge women's human rights as part of human rights and provide justice for victims of sexual violence. This study underscores the importance of feminist education to eradicate misogyny and patriarchal cultures. Furthermore, recognition and rehabilitation of sexual violence victims in war zones are necessary to restore affected communities. The author hopes future research will delve deeper to break the impunity in human rights violations and keep the memory of victims and the struggle for justice alive.

Abstract

This article discusses the changes in the implementation of death rituals organized by ethnic Chinese in Padang city. Documents in the form of photos and bylaws of the death ritual procession, an interview, and observations at the funeral home, crematorium of the Chinese socio-cultural and funeral association Himpunan Tjinta Teman (HTT), Himpunan Bersatu Teguh (HBT), and the Chinese cemetery complex in Bukit Sin Tiong and TPU Bungus Teluk Kabung are the sources of this article. The article's findings show that the performance of death procession rituals is an important part that marks the identity of the deceased and the family left behind. The ethnic Chinese of Padang still carry out death rituals in the Chinese tradition because there is a death congregation in the city of Padang that serves as a forum for preserving and organizing this ancestral tradition. In its development, the tradition of the death ritual procession has changed with the times, especially in the use of symbols, the stages of implementing a shorter and more efficient ritual process, the choice of the cremation process as a result of technological findings and the shift in ritual meaning from generation to generation of Chinese. These changes occurred in line with the changing times and the reforms adopted by the two Padang Chinese death societies as well as changes in the Chinese generation itself.

Abstract

This article explores the text structure of Kanekes (Baduy) carita pantun, focusing on the presence of rajah, previously understood as the beginning and end of the text (functioning as 'prayers and supplications' to the ancestors). Through analysis of documentation from J.J. Meijer (1891), Wim van Zanten (1977), as well as recent fieldwork (2022-2023), it was found that the rajah was not always in this position. This research uses an ethnographic approach and was conducted in August-October 2022 and September-October 2023 in Kanekes, Leuwidamar, Banten. Nine informants who work as pemantun and responders were recruited. Data were obtained through interview and recording techniques in three agrarian rituals (rice planting, house inauguration, and marriage). Based on the field data, it is found that the text of Baduy carita pantun in the three rituals has a unique different structure, with the pasaduan element not at the beginning and end, but after bangbalikan/usualan. In addition, panunda (intermediary) repetition also plays an important role. This finding challenges previous views and shows the complexity of the Baduy carita pantuntext structure that is different from other Sunda Tatar regions. The results of this study contribute to the understanding of the patterns of carita pantun in Baduy community based on field data and carita pantun texts that have been collected by previous researchers (Pleyte, Zanten, and Rosidi); knowledge about the aspects of preserving intangible cultural heritage among the Baduy (Kanekes) community which can be illustrated through agricultural ritual activities routinely carried out; and this study illustrates the current condition of carita pantun in Baduy (Kanekes) in the midst of cultural changes in the supporting community.

Abstract

The use of a language in a linguistic landscape outside its native environment tends to evoke attitudinal stances among individuals in the society. This phenomenon can be observed across Little Tokyo Blok M, Jakarta where Japanese language is widely used on restaurant signs. This master thesis discusses the language attitude of sign readers toward the utilization of Japanese in the area to identify the emerged language attitude and to explain the influencing factors. The study is conducted in mixed methods. The quantitative method (societal treatment approach) examines the statistics of language signs found in Japanese restaurant in regards to their multilingualism and code preference. On the other hand, the qualitative method (direct approach) explores the visitors’ responses during sosiolinguistic interviews to understand the cognitive process behind their attitude. The results show that the language attitude toward Japanese as a foreign language in the Little Tokyo is positive in nature. The positivity is reflected both on the triadic components of the attitude and across the various contexts of signage. Further, the notions of exoticism and authenticity concerning Japanese and its associations are found to be the influencing factors in two different parts of the attitude formation process. Contrary to the existing cognitive model, those parts are found to work simultaneously in determining the characteristics of the language attitude. Bringing forth empirical novelty and theoretical challenge, this thesis could serve as a valuable foundation or reference for further studies.

Abstract

This research focuses on translation and language errors discovered in English-Indonesian translation results. This study aims to investigate the types of errors mostly made by Indonesian novice translators. The data were obtained from translation practice assigned to undergraduate students, who were taking the compulsory basic translation course. The respondents, who were native Indonesian speakers, were asked to translate two paragraphs from a given text in class for one hour and send their translations to the raters via email. The raters then marked the errors in the students’ translations using the 2021 ATA’s Standardized Framework for Error Marking. The results of the study show that the most frequent errors made by the participants were spelling and terminology errors, which might be simply caused by sloppiness or by the participants’ lack of knowledge of the proper official Indonesian spelling system and which could be due to their ignorance of the proper terms.
