Abstract

This study aims to show the development of sanitation and hygiene infrastructure in Bandung from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. This research positions sanitation and hygiene infrastructure as part of urban technology that contributes to public welfare. This research used the historical method which consisted of four stages: heuristics, critics, interpretation, and historiography. Results show that sanitation management in Bandung in the early 20th century was conducted by harmonizing technology and natural fortress. Gemeente Bandung anticipated the unhygienic habits of the villagers, environmental pollution, and spread of diseases by providing clean water, toilet facilities, public washing, and an integrated sewage system. The construction of infrastructure that supported sanitation management was carried out from 1910 to 1938. As a result, by 1938, Bandung had already had clean water reservoirs, clean water pipelines, open pipelines for rainwater disposal, closed pipelines for waste disposal, sewage treatment systems, waste treatment management, and road cleaning services.

Abstract

Since the early 2000’s, Indonesian literary works raising the issue of homosexuality have been increasing in number. However, the proliferation of discourse on homosexuality cannot be necessarily interpreted as Indonesian literature’s increasing sympathy with homosexuality. Adequate discussion is needed regarding perceptions, perspectives, and attitudes towards homosexuality in literary works with the theme of homosexuality. In relation to this, we found that works raising the issue of homosexuality have not been able to escape from the framework of the prevailing social order and norms, namely heterosexism. This study aims to see how the idea of heterosexism works in narrating and embodying homosexuality in six chosen works with the theme of homosexuality. Results show that these six works address the robustness of heterosexism by presenting homosexual characters as individuals who are haunted by confusion about their own sexual orientation, giving stereotypical reasons for being homosexuals, and establishing homosexual relationships with gender roles that operate within the framework of heterosexuality.

There are many other aspects that can be explained to prove male and female differences, one of those differences can be seen by how they name colour. Using Lakoff’s theory, which talks about female and male differences in colour naming, as the main theory, this research is conducted. Using ten FIB UI English students as the sample, five males and five females, this research aims to prove Lakoff’s theory whether it is suitable with the condition of FIB UI English students or not. Besides, by the end of this research, readers can find some other aspects which can affect one’s colour vocabulary besides gender differences. At the end of the research, I can say that Lakoff’s theory about female and male differences in colour naming is more or less similar with the condition of FIB UI English students.

Abstract

Previous studies propose that female protagonists in Disney movies are represented based on gender construction that causes oppression towards women, but in 2014, Disney produces Maleficent which offers different characterization and theme opposing the aforementioned gender construction. By focusing on its different female main character and theme, this paper aims to see what kind of oppression occurs and how Disney presents their gender ideology in the movie. The findings reveal that even though Maleficent is portrayed as a powerful woman, she is also oppressed. Her magical power becomes a trigger of her oppression since men consider Maleficent’s power as a threat for their domination. This research gives an insight to see gender ideology in Disney movies which is still considered as an arguable issue among the society.

Abstract

The Baduys are rice farming communities who rely on nature and the forest. Therefore, they keep and maintain their forests through customs and cultural practices. Dudungusan is preserved forest, prohibited for cultivation. Garapan is the land that can be processed into fields (huma), following the needs and rules of cultivation. Although the Baduys live in groups in small villages at the foot and slopes of hills or mountains, they keep and follow their local wisdom. This is evident from the review and the community activities that have been done earlier. There are records of the knowledge, views, and understanding of the old and young Baduys about forest conservation and identifying existing problems. The method used is the dissemination and sharing of knowledge. The results of the data collection and identification of the reference model of socialization, or carean, are used to understand the local knowledge about forest conservation. The Baduy residents in Kampong Balimbing who are involved in the research are the kokolot, or the class of older generation, whereas the youth group are participating in the process. In general, the activity is well-shared for both for the older and younger generation. In addition to this, the residents of other Baduy villages may learn from Kampong Balimbing’s wisdom.

Abstract

Urban areas have developed rapidly in terms of demography and culture. This is because urban areas attract people who are searching for higher income and a better life than those in rural areas. Demographical and cultural development in urban areas often affects local culture. One example can be found in Pekanbaru City, Riau Province, Indonesia. The Riau Malays, the city’s native ethnic group, no longer dominates the city’s demographical landscape. In fact, the Minangkabaus as a migrant ethnic group actually dominate Pekanbaru City. However, there is still a limited body of documentation of and research on the language and culture in Pekanbaru City. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the toponyms of various areas in Pekanbaru City. This research is also intended to reveal the meaning of less popular local toponyms to provide valuable information for the general public. This research used the qualitative method with the toponymic approach. Data consist of all sub-district names in Pekanbaru City. Analysis was conducted to classify those names based on their basic toponymy, focusing on their lexico-semantic aspects. The meaning of those toponyms was obtained from interviews with selected respondents. In addition, this study also connects toponymy with various sociolinguistic aspects, especially ethnicity, language use, and code-mixing. Results show that most local toponyms in Pekanbaru City refer to certain geographical conditions, trees, hopes, and rivers. Furthermore, most local toponyms contain roots which originated from Indonesian, Riau Malay, and Javanese languages. In terms of ethnicity, Pekanbaru City is dominated by the Minangkabaus, Riau Malays, and Javanese. The dominant languages in Pekanbaru City are Indonesian, Minang, and Riau Malay. Code-mixing in local toponyms mostly occur between Indonesian and Javanese. However, not all sub-district names have identifiable toponymic meaning, so further research is needed to complement the existing results.

Abstract

The Chinese have settled in Bintan Island since Zheng He’s great expeditions in the 15th century. However, large-scale arrivals of the Chinese did not occur until in 1740. They worked as laborers in pepper and gambier plantations that belonged to Buginese nobles. Internal and external changes in the political landscape, as well as land and territorial tenures between the Hokkiens in Tanjungpinang and Teochews in Senggarang, added a new nuance to their roles as middlemen, land owners, and coolies in pepper and gambier plantations. This gave rise to contestation between these two ethnic groups. How did the land tenure process take place? What was the role of the Chinese and the Dutch East Indies government in that contestation? Using the concept of Chinese expansion proposed by Kwee Kui Han, this research found that the Chinese were able to establish very structured and systematic presence in the island, both in its hinterland and coastal areas. This condition made it easier for the Chinese to gain control of the economy. This study used the historical method to reconstruct the Chinese’s roles as intermediary traders and plantation owners, as well as the contestation that occurred in Tanjungpinang in the 19th century. Primary data were obtained from Dutch colonial-era sources and the writings of local and foreign historians in order to generate a more comprehensive picture of the topic.
