Abstract

This essay appraised linguistic features in selected utterances of some prominent and leading Nigerian politicians during political rallies held between October and December, 2022. These utterances, which serve as data for this paper were extracted from some Nigerian tabloids like NaijaNews.com, Opera News, Politic.nigeria.com, RealMedia, Vanguard News, Voice of the People (VoP) and www.thisdaylive.com. In linguistics, utterances are viewed as unit of speech. The significant meaning of speech, therefore, embeds in the utterance which may provide a basis for social positions and further interpretative actions or decisions by the listener. The data for this study were eleven (11) purposively selected excerpts collected from some Nigerian media outfits. The selected data were appraised and analyzed from the linguistic perspective of John Langshaw Austin’s speech act theory, although other linguistic insights are gleaned from other speech act analytic scholars. The speech theory of John Langshaw Austin emphasizes on meaning embedded in an utterance. His speech act is interested in what the speaker’s or the writer’s intention is, and what he or she does with words but not necessarily the meaning of words within the utterance. The essay revealed that political rally utterances are purposeful utterances laced with vituperations, repetitions, and choice codes meant to persuade and manipulate the electorates against their perceived opponents. These social political attributes, negative in the manner of approach, present contemporary Nigerian politicians as desperados whose intentions are to grab political power by all means. Therefore, the essay recommends constructive criticism and politeness in political rally utterances when doing things with words in order to reduce and curb unnecessary political hatred, social battery, democratic mayhem, oppositional killings and anarchy caused by unethical political utterances.

Abstract

Niger Delta uprising always evokes controversial positions viewed from a single perspective from the pages of print to electronic media with which many dramas and films on their themes clone some intertextual discourses as the absolute voice on the Niger Deltans’ problem. The major concern is usually the violence caused by the people of the Niger Delta to disrupt the peace of the Nigerian society without giving a second thought to the people’s complaint about the political which worsens the situations of the region. Using qualitative research methodology, framed on Mikhail Bakhtins’ theory of Dialogism as a suitable theoretical framework for essential critical guide, this paper discusses Uwemedimo Atakpo’s Watering the Hard Ground as a counter-discourse to Ahmed Yerima’s position in Hard Ground over Niger Delta people’s struggle, activities and their way forward in Nigeria. The objectives of the study are to examine the positions raised in Hard Ground and the counter point in Hard Ground on Niger Delta situation; to identify the areas of convergences and divergences in the two texts, and to assess how each text negotiates the way forward for the region. Findings show that Hard Ground discusses aggressiveness and self-destruction as the cause of frustration, while Watering the Hard Ground negotiates neglect and exclusion from the mainstream of lucrative activities as the cause of aggressiveness in Niger Delta. The two texts agree that violence is destructive to both the Government and the people; Hard Ground suggests repentance as a solution, while Watering the Hard Ground suggests the cleansing off of the industrial pollutions, education and inclusion of the people in government benefits. The paper concludes that dialogue between the two texts has given rise to a rational rethink over the Niger Delta controversy, and that counter-discourse may raise inimical frontiers in drama but it evolves a fresh premise that generates power to the society.

Abstract

This paper discusses the journey of Pasar Baru Post Office using The Biography of Things study in which observes the building from time to time. Pasar Baru Post Office is used as the main source in this paper. Amidst the changes since The Netherland-Colonial era, the building remains still and that became the reason this study was conducted through The Biography of Things study. The research method used in this article is the research framework of Sharer and Ashmore which consists of data collection, processing, and interpretation. The results of the study show that there are some changes in the physical form of the building or its commodification, which can be included as a way to put off the past colonial memory. This can be seen throughout the values and functions shifting that were once used as a place for postal and philatelic services, now the building has become a public creative space.

Abstract

A backchannel is generally known as a response in a conversation that serves as a sign that the interlocutor is paying attention. In conversation, verbal backchannel speech can simultaneously occur with nonverbal gestures. Backchannel in conversations in digital content is often found. Beauty content from Hiro Beauty Channel shows that backchannel in beauty vlogs often occurs through verbal and nonverbal . Previous studies have researched the behaviour of backchannel usage (Cutrone, 2011; Nurjaleka, 2019; Bodur et al., 2022; Ramadhani, 2023) and the behaviour of gazing gestures (Walker, 2010). However, there has yet to be research about the multimodality of backchannels in conversations on digital content such as beauty vlogs. This research explains the pattern of backchannel usage in beauty vlogs, both from verbal and non-verbal modes. This study methodology uses conversational analysis (Sacks et al., 1974; Heritage, 2001) and multimodality (Mondada, 2018). This study's result is that the interlocutor's backchannel means that 'the interlocutor is listening' and 'the interlocutor asks the speaker to continue his speech'. Both imply that the interlocutor is paying attention to the speaker. The backchannel multimodality pattern in beauty vlogs consists of three main types, namely (i) verbal backchannel, (ii) verbal and nonverbal backchannel, and (iii) nonverbal backchannel. This study also shows that the preferred mode in providing backchannel in Japanese combines both verbal and nonverbal modes.

Abstract

In 2022, based on Google Trends tools, Indonesia is ranked third as the country with the most searches related to Japanese anime. Wibu is a term that refers to someone who is outside Japan but likes and even tends to be obsessed with the culture of that country. This research aims explore how stereotypes of Wibu in Indonesia are constructed by digital media, specifically YouTube. Research findings show that Wibu in Indonesia is stereotyped as "smelling of onions", "Wibu Nolep", "perverted Wibu" and “pshycopath Wibu.” By conducting textual analysis on YouTube videos that are related to Wibu content, we argue that the construction of Indonesian Wibu’s stereotypes are done through narrative and visual elements in the videos. Based on this research, researchers discovered the role of YouTube in affirming the stereotypical construction of Wibu in Indonesia with ambiguous representations.

Abstract

Misogyny is hatred, contempt, or prejudice against women or girls. It is a form of sexism used to keep women in a lower social status than men, thereby maintaining patriarchal social roles. Hegemonic masculinity is the most exalted configuration of gender practices that legitimizes patriarchy. This article draws on the framework of Raewyn Connell's theory of masculinity and Kate Manne's concept of misogyny to discuss the phenomenon of Indonesian TikTok videos with the hashtag “Pick Me Boy” or #Pick Me Boy. Pick Me Boy challenge traditional masculinity to gain women's attention, and then demean women if rejected. This article uses a qualitative research method to explore how the language expressions and comments in Pick Me Boy videos reflect the phenomenon of mixed masculinity and misogyny by collecting and analyzing videos imitating Pick Me Boy on TikTok. The findings show that Pick Me Boy parody videos on TikTok illustrate male competition for female attention, reinforce stereotypes of masculinity while embodying male misogyny and reinforcing sexist behavior. This study highlights the various ways in which the Pick Me Boy trend perpetuates misogynistic beliefs and practices, revealing the complex interplay between gender dynamics and social media in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the impact of the development of tourist areas on culinary businesses by taking the case of the program for the construction of facilities and infrastructure supporting tourism villages which was implemented starting in 2017 and looking at the influence of regional disparities on the effectiveness of assistance which is then compared between the regions of Java-Bali and outside Java-Bali. Using the Difference-In-Differences (DID), the study analyzed the impact of the support program on 115 tourism villages, comparing them to other tourism villages in the same sub-district that did not receive support. The results show that, on average, the number of culinary enterprises in the form of restaurants and food stalls in the Java-Bali region increased by 12 units after the implementation of the Tourism Village Programme, in contrast to Tourism Villages in the same sub-district that did not receive support. These findings are supported by the better condition of road infrastructure, street lighting, and telephone signals in Tourism Villages in Java and Bali. The results of this study explain that regional disparities have an impact on the growth of culinary enterprises in tourism villages.

Abstract

The concept of multiculturalism has become a keyword of contemporary Korean society. The influx of migrants has made Korea could not escape becoming an ethnically diverse nation and a multicultural society. This study aims to understand the concept of Korean multiculturalism through migrant workers and marriage migrants by examining their life in Korea including what kind of issues the migrants have been encountered and how was the effort of Korean government in tackling those issues. It found that the government occupied an important position in leading multiculturalism in Korea as it was the one who promoted Korea's moving towards multiculturalism particularly by leading migrants coming into Korea. Indeed, the incoming of migrants has diversied Korea's homogenous culture, but migrants seemed to only serve as a "solution" for responding to the demand of cheap labors, the bride's shortage, and care provider deficiency. Multiculturalism supposedly recognizes and accomodates all diversity, yet Korea has not acknowledged and accomodated migrants as minorities in its society.

Abstract

This research delves into the extensive lexicon of the Javanese language, specifically focusing on expressions related to feelings of love. The presence of multiple Javanese lexicons denoting love poses a significant challenge, prompting the central question: What are the semantic nuances that distinguish each lexicon, given the absence of absolute synonyms? The research aims to elucidate the semantic fields that differentiate each love-related lexicon in Javanese. Data for this research is drawn from four distinct Javanese dictionaries, spanning various publication periods. Additionally, the study incorporates diverse data sources, including a book titled "Antologi Cerita Pendek Bahasa Jawa di Yogyakarta," Djaka Lodhang magazine, and the Javanese language corpus from the Javanese Studies at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia which contribute valuable data on sentences conveying the meaning of love. This qualitative research used Nida’s (1975) theoretical framework on componential analysis of meaning. The results show the existence of sixteen Javanese lexicons conveying the meaning of love, with only eight being actively used in sentences, and one common component, four diagnostic components, and forty-one supplementary components. These meaning components provide insights into the nuanced distinctions and potential redefinitions of each love-related lexicon in the Javanese language.

Abstract

This research analyzes the ideology that the author intends to instill in picture storybooks for children in Japan. The study aims to explore how the author conveys the ideology of handling trauma in children after earthquake disasters. The objects of the study are two picture storybooks titled "Yuzuchan" and "Yappari Ouchi Ga Ii Na." The research was conducted qualitatively using the documentary data search method. The analysis was carried out with van Dijk's CDA theory and Peirce's Semiotics Theory. The results of the analysis reveal that "Yuzuchan" and "Yappari Ouchi Ga Ii Na" are picture storybooks produced to help children cope with post-earthquake trauma. Disaster education handling the trauma is distributed in Macro Structure, Superstructure, and Microstructure. Although both of them deliver disaster education to overcome the same trauma, because the two authors have different backgrounds, the goals of the post-disaster ideology to be conveyed are different, the themes raised, and the topics raised are different. To convey the ideology of dealing with the trauma of death in Yuzuchan's story, the author raised the theme of loss due to catastrophic death. While at "Yappari Ouchi Ga Ii Na", from the ideology of disaster education facing trauma healing the ideology of earthquake trauma. The ideology of earthquake trauma handling is reflected in the macro and micro structures in both picture story discourses. The author uses diction and atmosphere to depict the post-earthquake trauma experienced by the characters.
