Abstract

Vertical housing is often considered a viable solution to address the high population density in DKI Jakarta. However, it poses a challenge when such housing is situated within Cultural Heritage zones that require preservation. This scenario gives rise to potential conflicts of interest between the preservation of archaeological resources and the development of housing for the public's benefit, as exemplified in Kampung Akuarium. This study aims to elucidate the extent of community involvement in resolving the issues arising from apartment development within cultural heritage zones. It emphasizes the need for balanced community participation to achieve a win-win solution. The research methodology employed in this explanatory qualitative study entailed conducting in-depth interviews and direct field observations. The data collected revealed the Kampung Akuarium community's participatory approach in addressing the conflict of interest. The local community actively participated in both the development of the apartment complex and the preservation of archaeological resources. Their involvement was evident during the planning stage, policy implementation, and the actual development of the apartment complex situated in the cultural heritage zone. This collaborative participation has fostered harmonious preservation of archaeological resources while meeting the housing needs of the Kampung Akuarium community.

Abstract

This article discussed street art in Cairo after the Arab Spring ( العربي الربيع( . Revolution took place on Januari 25. 2011 when Egypt was led by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF). This paper was aimed at elaborating how street art in Cairo served as a means of political resistance employed to resist SCAF military government. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative method, Jenkins’s (2009) participatory culture theory and Peteet’s (1996) art as a means of political resistance. This study found out that, in general, street art or graffiti in Cairo during SCAF military government era emerged in the forms of stencil and mural works. In that era, street art served as a means of political resistance employed for various purposes such as criticizing the regime, telling stories of what was going on, depicting violence and murders committed by the security forces, commemorating martyrs of the revolution and telling stories of struggle, oppression and sexual harassment towards Egyptian women, Street art offered opportunities to the community to participate there so as to express their aspirations and make Cairo’s streets and walls public space for ‘a participatory culture’. Graffiti or street art found in Cairo served as a means of political resistance. Most of the murals on the walls depicted chaotic situations of that era, commemorated events and martyrs of the revolution, and commented on the social and political situations sharply.

Abstract

The nature of man in relationship with his society is ambivalent, reflecting that human beings have the capacity to alter their personality to fit in to the situation they are confronted with at different times. This alterations result in indeterminate portrayal of human identity in creative works. No character is whole until the social condition he is pitched against justifies him. This paper evaluates Effiong Johnson’s treatment of indeterminacy of the human selves in a chaotic social milieu in Son of the Land. It uses qualitative research methodology and bases its theoretical framework on Sigmund Freud’s Psychodynamic Theory. Findings show that uncertainty of social conditions may force people to vary the attitudes they put up for survival. Dramaturgy is the various impressions people put up at different times. Personality is the discernible self marked for a particular regular situation, while the quirk in the marked self suggests split-personality. The totality of all selves in their sameness or differentiation in the confrontations with pleasant and unpleasant situations in life suggests human identity. The paper concludes that unstable society will provide unstable citizens. The circumstances people face in life shape their pattern of thought which motivates action they take. Everyone puts up a self when confronted with a happenstance. The knowledge of human behaviour should be broadened in drama to help in the curtailment of sweeping conclusion over human attitude, varying selves and identity in the society.

Abstract

The study examines Ola Rotimi’s Theatre from both the literary and theatrical perspectives. The study contends that Ola Rotimi created/developed simplicity of style both in his playwriting and in theatre practice. The study also notes that Rotimi has created the drama and theatre of lasting quality through his knowledge of the culture and tradition of his people and his copious deployment of Para-linguistic aesthetics in his plays. Rotimi anchores all these on his knowledge of world theatre in his practice, thus creating the phenomenon of total theatre. The study concludes that the laws of the theatre are provisional and subject to change, derived from creativity and not from theory.

Abstract

Brunei Darussalam maintains its absolute monarchy system by integrating its well-established Islamic values into national ideology while calculating strategic plans to progress. Wawasan Brunei 2035 embodies collective national objectives that tie Brunei together as a nation amidst the future’s challenges. This pathway is viewed as a paradox of modernity and tradition. Using a qualitative method, this study provides perspectives on how Brunei Darussalam maintains its unique political stand in this fashion by looking into its formation of national identity and examining Wawasan Brunei 2035 as a national narrative. The study finds that Wawasan Brunei 2035 guides the nation and keeps it on track to retain its prosperity. As the idea of progress is translated into this development vision, Brunei carefully selects the element of modernity to sustain its standing.

Abstract

Carnivals situate a state or nation in the global cultural map, for their especial merit of fostering for the host community, economic advancement and a healthier international profile in the diplomatic comity. The present study engages the relevance of the Calabar Carnival beyond the realms of entertainment and tourism, but as a politico-cultural agent in the global environment where diplomacy conditions the reputation, acceptability, and sometimes fortunes of nations. In a multicultural nation like Nigeria, where autonomous ethnic identity is an intense superstructure of indigenous beliefs, dressing, cuisine, and native performance; cultural diplomacy can play a significant role in regulating intercultural relations. Culture therefore, can play a nationalistic function as a unifier of divergent interests and orientations, especially within the thematic and logistical organisation of festivals and carnivals, and the touristic benefits they have for diplomatic intentions. The Calabar Carnival represents that nationalistic intent to explore and promote the objective of cultural diplomacy, both on the national and international frontier. The objective of the present study consequently, is two-fold. Firstly, to analyse the sociocultural implications of the Calabar carnival on the national polity, such that it validates the carnival's potentials in economic and touristic development. Secondly, to discuss the logistical and ideational challenges of hosting the Carnival, as well as possible ways of ameliorating them. The study takes its foundation in the theory of diplomacy, which submits that the more we meet people through trade and other platforms the more we outsource and propagate our native culture, values and ideas. The study employs the participant-observation, interview method, and content analysis of relevant literature, to pursue its objectives.

Abstract

Characters in a movie often use idioms in various situations to express certain ideas. However, translating idioms can be challenging for translators making the movie subtitle. This descriptive-qualitative research aims to examine the types of idioms that appear in Game Night movie (2018) and compare the strategies used in the fansub and the official subtitle of the movie in translating idiomatic expressions. The data analyzed in this research consist of all the idioms that appear in the movie and their Indonesian translations. The results of this study show that English phrasal compounds constitute the most frequently used type of idiom. Meanwhile, the most used translation strategy in both the fansub and the official subtitle is the translation by paraphrase strategy. Despite the application of the same strategy, there are still some differences in the translations of the same idioms between the two subtitles. Meanwhile, other translation strategies are used in different frequencies. Overall, the study finds the official subtitle to be more communicative than the fansub translation.
