Abstract

This article is an excerpt from an undergraduate thesis of the same title which focuses on A Series of Unfortunate Events, a children‟s book series by Lemony Snicket. This thesis explores how a culture of fear shapes childhood, which is represented in the series. By using qualitative textual analysis the research discusses how the series represent the way childhood is shaped by a culture of fear through the depiction of various characters and social institutions in the novels. This research also explores the author‟s attempts in challenging the notion that children are vulnerable by analyzing the Baudelaires‟ identity and vulnerability. Results suggest that A Series of Unfortunate Events demonstrates ambivalence in the perception of childhood. Social institutions that should create a safe space for children tend to further perpetuate the culture of fear for them. Furthermore, children‟s vulnerability is often taken advantage of by adults for their own interests. Results also suggest that for children, their childhood is shaped by a culture of fear that is created and maintained by adults

Abstract

The paper assesses the issue of terrorism as a social reality present in the Nigerian state from its origination and the questions treated by the paper among others include: what dimensions did the occurrences of terrorism take on Nigerian socio-political sphere? What are the counter measures taken by individual and groups in dealing with state organized terrorism? What are the dimensions state organized terrorism take in the modern Nigerian state? Lekan Balogun‟s Ogun Skugga is used primarily while other literary works are used to supplement. The paper argues that the state organized terrorism was a surreptitious method of coercion adopted by the colonial authorities equally and eventually adopted by the political elites after independence. It also maintains that individual and groups engaged in subtle and overt terrorism as counter measure against state sponsored terrorism. Again, current acts of terrorism organized by state are multidimensional so also are variables presented by ethnic, tribal and political inclinations which in turn stimulate approaches by individual and groups in counter measures. The importance of this work is the perspectives it presents from history and drama to assess the issue of terrorism and its relevance to modern Nigerian society.

This paper analyzes a film as one of the media with the ability to convey certain messages to the public. Films can reflect the social and cultural conditions of society, thereby they can be used to spread the current ideas, views, and ideologies of a country. Films in Turkey are part of a culture that has developed rapidly and has become an entertainment for the people. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk reformed and turned Turkey into a new country with the ideology of secularism, controlling religious institutions and expressions. This journal article aims to describe the implementation of Turkish secular ideology in the country's cultural settings, namely censorship of religious elements in Turkish films from 1939 to 1990. The method used in this article is critical descriptive through literature study. This article concludes that censorship is not only practiced to maintain secularism in Turkey, but also to protect the religion itself.

Abstract

The three basic values of the philosophy of life belonging to the culture of the Sundanese people in Indonesia are the principles of triadic patterns of life contained in the Tritangtu Sunda philosophy. The three basic philosophical values contain a view of the division of triadic worlds, namely Buana Nyungcung (upper world, metaphor; sky, water, and women), Buana Larang (underworld, metaphor; earth, land, and men), and Buana Pancatengah ( Middle world, metaphor; stone, human, male and female, and life behavior). Tritangtu Sunda is a cosmic perspective of the unification of three interconnected worlds in the life of the Sundanese people. The union is the marriage between Buana Nyungcung and Buana Larang, and Buana Pancatengah which is the center of their connection. Tritangtu Sunda's philosophy of life which contains the construction of cultural and artistic values is used as a model for the directing method; Triadic Pattern Total Theater Performance. Research and concretization of method models are realized through a transformation process, to find new creations or new forms of change both in function and structure. "To transform", means to create something new that has never existed before. Transformation can mean a change in “mindset”. The research tools used Environmental theater theory and Performance Theory suggested by Schechner (1994 and 2004).

Abstract

A museum is a place to record world civilization development, especially for preserving culture and history. The museum is also used for permanent exhibitions of objects that deserve public attention, such as historical, artistic, and scientific heritage. In this regard, the museum functions as a place to serve learning, educational, and fun needs. However, nowadays, the museum is only considered a place to store antiques and ancient objects. The lack of museum enthusiasts is caused by the perception that museums are not significant places to broaden insight and knowledge. Besides, there is a lack of publications and information about museums. One great way to introduce museums is through new media based on digital marketing. Digital media is ubiquitous and relevant to today's society to introduce Jambi People's Struggle Museum. New media based on digital marketing can inform the museum's activities and educative materials. Thus, more Indonesians will know about and become interested in visiting the Jambi People's Struggle Museum.

Abstract

As an island country, Singapore has limited territory so it needs appropriate policies to arrange the balance between its population and territory. After separated with the Federation of Malaya in 1965, Singapore drew up a regional plan involving UNDP. Urban Redevelopment Authority is the institution that plays a role in carrying out this policy. Singapore organizes its slum areas for the better, one of which is located at Marina Bay Sand and the current transformation is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals program to maintain the balance of urban energy needed by Singaporeans. This approach involves the private sector in regional development and planning which is always organized following developments in the global community. This research was conducted using a sociological historical change approach by observing changes in Singapore government policies in managing the environment in the Marina Bay Sands area as well as field observations using qualitative methods through taking field data to the Marina Bay Sands area in Singapore, as well as unobtrusive observation, namely collecting data from informants indirectly through the social media channel Youtube.

Abstract

This article discusses the embodiment of the statues of the gods and goddesses at the Li Tie Guai Temple in West Jakarta. The embodiment of the statues in this temple is discussed using a life course perspective. The data used are all the statues of the gods in the temple, totaling thirty statues. The method used is study of literature and field data, followed by data processing which is done by classifying the statues into age, adult, teenager, and children as well as the shape of men, women, and others. The next stage is data interpretation. The results showed that there were more statues depicted in the forms of adults and old people compared to the forms of teenagers and children. This shows that from a life course perspective, a person during his or her lifetime becomes a god more when he or she is mature and old because the process of becoming a god requires special abilities and a purified soul that can be acquired over a long time. Then the embodiment of male statues is more numerous than the embodiment of female statues and others. This shows that in the past, especially in China, men had greater domination than women and others.

Abstract

Garudayana Saga is a comic that tells the story of Garuda. Garudayana Saga has the concept of Garuda, which is also found in Adiparwa. Adiparwa is the first book of the Mahabharata story. The Garuda character in the Adiparwa narrative is illustrated with manga-style drawings in Garudayana Saga. This research aims to explain the representation of the Garuda character seen in the Garuda character image in the Garudayana Saga, based on a quote that contains the character of Garuda in Adiparwa. The research is conducted using Creswell's qualitative method (2014), combined with Damono's transmedia theory (2018) and Peirce's semiotic theory (1998). Overall, the character of Garuda in Garudayana Saga is maintained based on Garuda in Adiparwa, which can be seen in physical characteristics, the title of king, supernatural powers, nature, and appetite, with the addition of accessories worn by the Garuda character in the comic. Then, found a sign in the form of 3 icons, 1 index, and 3 symbols. The results of this study reveal that the representation of the Garuda character in Garudayana Saga, which is in the form of a manga-style drawing, is compatible with the Garuda character in Adiparwa's narrative. We can conclude that the Garuda character in Garudayana Saga is correctly represented with a manga-style drawing based on the Garuda character in Adiparwa.
