Abstract

Poem is a medium of communication used by the poet to express their idea in a beautiful language. One of the elements of poem is imagery, functions of imagery are to create a vivid, realistic description of the scene, appealing to as many of the readers senses as possible, describes the appearance of characters and settings, the sounds, smells, taste and feeling of the poet. The objective of this research were to identify the types of imagery and describe the functions of imagery found in William Wordsworth’s poems The researcher used qualitative method with descriptive approach in this research. The results of this study show that there are 4 types of imagery found, they are, visual imagery, auditory imagery, olfactory imagery and organic imagery. Visual imagery in poetry functions to represent objects seen by the surrounding of the the poet related to nature such as flowers, stars, animals, and plants, auditory imagery in poetry has a function to represent sounds that also come from nature around the poet such as voice of animals, waves, wind and lightning. Meanwhile, the olfactory imagery in the poem functions to represent the scent of plants such as the smell of straw. Organic imagery functions to describe the poet feelings related to nature where the author feel happy when he sees beautiful views. Function of imagery that appears in the poem is to describe the object, poet feeling, as well as to represent the sound and smell that the poet experience from nature.

Abstract

This study discusses social conflict in the novel Great Expectations. Every paragraph has a conflict in it. Readers should look more deeply at each meaning in the novel to make it easier tounderstand. The theory used in analyzing this novel is the theory of social conflict by Lewis A Coser(2002), which categorizes it into three elements, namely Conflict concerning social statuses, Conflict of interest, and Conflict of role. The problem of this research is to find out the social conflict (conflict concerning social statuses, conflict of interest and conflict of role) in the noveland also to find out how it affects the reader. The are 13 cases identifying of Social Conflict: 7 data identifying of conflict concerning social statues, 3 data identifying conflict of interest, and3 data identifying conflict of role. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative because the data analyzed is in the form of sentences. The social conflict in the novel is the storyof the main character. The mode in the novel is personal distance, written and spoken. The influence of social conflict on readers is closely related because it is often found in everyday lifeto help people conclude various kinds of conflicts that are often encountered.

Abstract

This research discusses verbal and non-verbal communication in Barack Obama's farewell address speech. The aim was to find out verbal and nonverbal communication, kinds of verbal and nonverbal communication and how the verbal affects the no-verbal itself in Barak Obama's farewell address speech. The research was conducted using qualitative research methods. This study uses verbal theory from Adler and Rodman (2006) which divides verbal into two types, namely speech and writing, while he also uses non-verbal theory from Ruben and Stewart (2014) which groups non-verbal into five parts, namely: paralanguage, kinesics, haptics, proximity and chronemics. Kinesics refers to the body language used and facial expressions, Haptics refers to touch given such as shaking hands, etc., and Paralanguage refers to vocal or how to speak. Proxemics refers to how we interact with others; we usually talk more intimately with those who are closest to us. Two-way conversation or turns of speech are referred to as chronemics. However, in the last speech Barack Obama used only a few of the above types of non-verbal.

Abstract

The researchers obtained several points that could lead to an easier understanding of this research. In this finding, there are 4 types of the slang: blending, someone’s nicknames, shortened sentences, and society slang. The most dominant type in the findings of this study is the type of society slang with 15 data from 35 slang data found, and the least type of slang found in the lyrics of the song is the blending type as many as 5 slang from 35 slang data in the findings. The second is the slang function in the lyrics of the black eyed peas’ song. The functions that have been set as many as 14 functions: Makes a Humor, look different/follow a trend, look picturesque, attract attention, to avoid cliches, to the point/shortened sentences, increase vocabulary, avoid words that are always used, talk and to write, to make it easier to interact in social, to induce friendliness or intimacy, shows not part of the group, identity of a certain group, to be Secret. The dominant slang function is shortened word or to the point as much as 7 data from 35 slang found. And the last is the meaning that has been explained using several trusted dictionaries.

Abstract

This study was aimed at accomplishing two objectives: (1) to identify the types of conversational implicature found in the Green Book movie and (2) to discover the functions of each conversational implicature found in the main characters' dialogue in the Green Book movie. The data in this study were taken from dialogue of the main characters in the Green Book movie 2018. The researchers used a qualitative method to analyze the data and to find out the types of conversational implicature. The researchers used conversational implicature theory by Paul Grice, and used the theory of Roman Jacobson to find out the function of implicature. The result of this study indicates the process of identifying conversational implicature, the type of implicature, and the function. The types of implicature that occur are generalized and particularized. There are 19 cases identifying conversational implicature: 12 data identifying generalized conversational implicature, and 7 data identifying particularized conversational implicature. Implicatures in this movie have four types of language function named metalinguistic, conative, emotive, and referential. First, the kind of conversational implicature commonly occurs in the Green Book movie is Generalized Conversational Implicature because it is used in daily conversation so the listeners do not need specific knowledge to interpret the meaning. And then, there are two kinds of language function that are dominant found in this study, which are the conative and the referential. It showed the implicature that implied by the main character in the movie are concerned with (1) influencing the behavior of the addressee or convey the speaker’s commands, (2) providing the actual information based on the situation in the movie.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the various linguistic idioms used in Nancy Springer's movie Enola Holmes. The descriptive approach used in this study According to Huberman and Miles (2014) (1994:10). The information was derived from Nancy Springer's film Enola Holmes, which depicts the lives of youths in the Victorian era. By seeing as many films as possible, data is analyzed. Make an effort to follow every discourse. The author groups a number of exchanges in the movie into categories to demonstrate the language style used in Enola Holmes and what the main character and other characters mean by language style in the context of the scene. friends and the author's linguistic style, Nancy Springer. The study's findings indicate that the following linguistic tenors are used in Nancy Springer's Enola Holmes: frozen, formal, relaxed, intimate, and consultative. Additionally, Nancy Springer's writing has a significant impact on the way language is generated, as it immediately conjures up an environment. And the conclusion of this study is that in the film Enola Holmes by Nancy Springer which depicts the environment of teenagers in the Victorian era, they prefer formal language styles in each language.

Abstract

Language is very important in conveying the right information with the aim of influencing the individual. Advertising language shows more persuasive, attracts people's attention, and is creative. More attractive and creative advertising can influence more people to try these advertisements. This study focused on the category of language style and how the use of advertising formula in conveying message of the advertisement on CNN. The purpose of this study is to identify and describe the types of language style in advertisement on CNN and to explore how the use of advertising formulas convey messages in advertisement on CNN to viewers. In conducting this research, the researcher used qualitative research and descriptive methods. The advertisements were taken randomly from as many as 13 advertisements from three videos on commercial breaks channel. The results of this study show that there were 4 categories of language style used in advertisements on CNN, namely the morphological style, syntactical style, rhetorical style, and sloganized style. Advertisement on CNN uses a different type of language style. In terms of morphological category, advertisement on CNN uses simple and formal language, misspelling or coinage, loanword, the use of verb, and the use of adjectives. In terms of syntactical category, advertisement on CNN uses interrogative sentences and imperative sentence. In terms of rhetorical category, advertisement on CNN uses simile, repetition, and rhyming. In terms of sloganized category, advertisement on CNN use slogan and taglines. Furthermore, there were 6 advertising formulas used in advertisement, namely, soft sell, slice of life, comparison, straightforward, demonstration, and spokesperson.

Abstract

This study is about Speech Style Used in Child Development. The aim of this research is to find out the different speech styles used in child development. The researcher has compared what speech styles that are used. Such as, formal style, frozen style, intimate style, casual style and consultative style. The theory chosen by the researcher about speech style is the theory of Martin Joos which classifies speech styles into five. There are two problems formulated in this study: (1) What are the differences between active children and passive children? (2) What are the functions of each type of speech style used by active children and passive children? The researcher has compared. The method used in this research Qualitative method and Sociolinguistics approach. This research investigated 11 students in one grade in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) Karama. In this analysis, the researcher found 4 out of 5 types of speech style, the researcher found consultative style, casual style, intimate style and formal style. Then, for the functions, the researcher also found 3 out of 5 types of speech. The researcher found expressive, directive and representative.

Abstract

This research discusses tattoos in the City of Bones movie. A tattoo is the art of tattooing the body with various themes or more themes that are poured on the upper part of the body skin to become works of art, which for the owner of the tattoo is a sign of pride or a meaningful warning. There are 10 signs in the movie, namely: calm angers mean emotion control, angelic power means removing traces, deflect means helper from attack, speed means to supporting or giving strength to other tattoos, stamina means power, soundless means moving without being noticed, fortitude means inner strength, vision means making the enemy have no power, strength means energy, and iratze heal means healing. This research is expected to help the reader understand the meaning of the signs mentioned in the film. The researcher used a qualitative research and descriptive method in conducting this research. The researcher used this method because the research objective describes the data in the spoken or written text. The results of this study indicate that the tattoos in the movie have meaning, but the tattoos are only used for movies because the City of Bones movie was fiction and unrelated to the real world.

Abstract

In this study, researcher analyzed the symptoms that arise from psychopathic disorder. The researcher analyzed 2 problems, they are: (1) What are the symptoms of the main characters potrayed in the movie "The Silence of the Lambs"? (2) What are the factors that cause the main characters of “The Silence of the Lambs” become a psychopath? The movie "The Silence of the Lambs" is a 1991 film directed by Jonathan Demme and adaptation of the novel by Thomas Harris. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive method and a psychological approach. Based on the findings, there are 8 psychopathic symptoms that appear in this movie. Hannibal Lecter's character has 6 psychopathic symptoms, namely Glib and superficial, Lack of remorse or guilt, Lack of empathy, Deceitful and manipulative, Impulsive, and Poor behavior controls. Meanwhile, Buffalo Bill's character has 6 psychopathic symptoms, namely Egocentric and grandiose, Lack of remorse or guilt, Lack of empathy, Deceitful and manipulative, Poor behavior controls, and Early behavior problems. The factor that causes Hannibal Lecter's character to become a psychopath is Trauma. Meanwhile, Buffalo Bill's character being a psychopath is Ultimate Causa
