Abstract

The objectives of the research were to find out the main cause of Dissociative Identity Disorder of the main character in a movie called The Secret Window, the symptoms of Dissociative Identity Disorder of the main character, and the effects of Dissociative Identity Disorder on the main character. The data were taken from the main character in the Secret Window movie, characterization, dialogue, plot, and the movie itself. The method used by the researchers in this research was the descriptive qualitative method. The results of this research showed that: 1) the cause of the Dissociative Identity Disorder of the main character, Morton Rainey, was when he found his wife was cheating on him, 2) there were two symptoms that appeared in Morton Rainey’s disorder: heard voices and amnesia, 3) the effects of Dissociative Identity Disorder on Morton Rainey was he murdered his wife, Amy Morton and Amy’s affair, Ted Milner.

Abstract

In the current century, racism is a problem in society that is still happening. Various kinds of movements have been made so that this action can be completely destroyed. The art activists began to run campaigns through their literary works. One of them is the movie called Green Book. Taking the green book film as the object of research, this research wants to show acts of racism in movie and compare acts of racism that occur against black people in the United States. This movie is based on the true story of American society during the Jim Crow Act in 1962. The author uses a qualitative descriptive method with a sociological approach to explain racist behavior to black Americans in America. The results of this study indicate that the racist behavior that occurs in the movie "Green Book" is indeed a picture of racism that occurs in the United States.

Abstract

Women have long suffered because of gender discrimination. In patriarchal societies, discrimination is more fatal due to its homogeneous beliefs and values. This discrimination against women often leads to mental problems for some individuals. Literature serves as a fitting platform to voice social issues, including gender-based discrimination. This study aims to analyze the gender discrimination reflected in the novel "Woman at Point Zero" using Bhui & Hosang's (2018) theory of Gender discrimination and its connection to mental health. The study was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method and analyzed using a feminist approach. The study shows that gender discrimination affects almost every aspect of society, and its impact on women's mental health is significant. The experience of Firdaus, a woman living in a patriarchal society, who constantly suffers from unfair treatment, has lost her passion for life. The study concludes that Firdaus as the main character and as a woman does not want to be treated differently, unjustly, and violently. As a woman, she wants to be treated equally, supported, respected, and have the same rights in the household, workplace, education, cultural society, and even politics.

Abstract

In this study, the researchers discussed the communication styles Donald Trump used when delivering his speech. The three speeches studied were Israel's capital is now Jerusalem, Coronavirus news conference and Radical islamic terrorism speech. This study aims to determine how the communication style is applied to Donald Trump's speech and what types of communication styles are most often used by Donald Trump. In determining this, researchers used the theory of Tubbs and Moss (1996). There are six types of communication styles in Tubbs and Moss theory, namely Equalitarian, Structuring, Controlling, Dynamic, Relinquishing and Withdrawal. Qualitative content analysis is a method of researching problems in this study. researchers found only four types of the six types of communication styles that have been proposed, the four types are Structuring, Controlling, Dynamic and Relinquishing. Dynamic style is the least used type of communication style, which is only found in the second speech. While the other three types dominate in every speech, especially the Controlling style which is the type of communication style most often used by Donald Trump.

Abstract

Gender stereotypes are views or beliefs that are generally applied to men and women within a culture or society. This research aims to analyze the aspects and meanings of gender stereotypes in Legally Blonde movie. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method and is analyzed using a feminist approach. The research findings indicate that the movie Legally Blonde presents various stereotypes about women. However, the main character in the movie, Elle Woods, successfully challenges and proves herself to be a woman who is not only glamorous and feminine, but also intelligent and capable of studying law at Harvard and becoming a lawyer. The research concludes that stereotypes in the film can be harmful and limit opportunities available to women in real life. By challenging these stereotypes, Legally Blonde encourages audiences to see women beyond their physical appearance or social roles. Appearance cannot be an indicator of one's intelligence and abilities.

Abstract

This research discusses the language of women contained in the series 'The Summer I Turned Pretty'. This research aims to analyze the female language contained in the series 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' by using Lakoff's theory (1973 & 1975) to analyze ten features of women’s language. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The researcher analyzed the women’s language in the series 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' which amounted to 7 episodes and lasted about 45 minutes each. The result of this study shows that 10 features of female language were found in the series. The features of women’s language including lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, rising intonation on declaratives, empty adjectives, precise color terms, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, ‘superpolite’ forms, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. The reason women use the features of the female language is because to cover themselves from self-confidence or make them feel confident when using these features. From the 10 data observed, the researcher concludes that some features have similar purposes but different uses.

Abstract

This research discusses Meaning in the song of One Direction  in the “Midnight Memories” album. It aims to analyze the meaning of the song based on the theory of Leech (1981) and Yule (1960) to analyze the types also to know how the implied meanings are presented in each song. This study used a qualitative descriptive research methodology. The results of this research show that there are 52 extracts describing the types of meaning found of the One Direction songs in "Midnight Memories' ' album. There were 7 types of meaning's found based on the theory of Leech. They were Conceptual (2), connotative (10), affective (8), social (4), Reflected (2), Collocative (1), and thematic (3). There were 6 types of presupposition found also based on Yule (1960) theory, there were existential (5), factive (7), lexical (6), non-factive (4), structural (2) and counterfactual (3). It means that each song contains meanings that the singers want to convey. Based on 52 data observed, the research concluded that the true meaning can be found using the theory of Leech (1981) and the implied meaning also concerned based on Yule's (1960) theory of presuppositions

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the issue of gender inequality between men and women through gender roles depicted in the film Mulan 2020 by using Alice Eagly's social role theory. The findings of this study should encourage readers to perceive and comprehend feminism, gender inequality, its kinds and its impacts more clearly. Alice Eagly classifies gender inequality into two parts, namely stereotyping and subordination. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method where the main data of this research is taken from the dialog and scenes of the film Mulan (2020). The results of this study show that there are 26 data that show gender inequality which are divided into 11 data that show stereotypical expressions of masculinity, 4 data that show stereotypical expressions of femininity, and 11 data that show expressions of subordination. Society's view of the prevailing social norms has a huge impact on the roles considered suitable for each individual so that sometimes it causes inequality and this can be seen clearly in the movie Mulan.

Abstract

Language is the intelligence to comprehend and produce sign, gesture, posture, written and spoken words that send a certain meaning. Language can bring order to human life and builds social interaction which helps people to express their feelings and thoughts from a person to others. This study uses movies as the object to take the data. Movie is one of the visual aids that can be used to entertain and share the moral value of the story. This study aims to determine the kinds and the cause of social injustices that happen in Neil Burger’s movie “Divergent”. The movie talks about the life of society in the city that is controlled by the government and strong factions. The story begins when a young woman joins the games to know where her personality belongs. The writer will use qualitative research because this study aims to identify the phenomena that is happening in the movie. Moreover, a descriptive method is used because the research describes the characteristics of a particular society or phenomena. The findings in this study take from the dialogues, acts and by seeing the societies’ character. The result of this study shows that there are two kinds of social injustice in the movie. First is stratification among 5 factions, between capitalist faction which is included in parties of a status types and proletary factions which is included in authority types. And the second is discrimination. There are two types discrimination including in this study, social competition and consensual discrimination. Moreover, values and relationships are the causes of the social conflict happening in this study.

Literalture is al waly thalt people use words to shalre feelings alnd show life. It often tells stories using things from everydaly life. AL novel is al type of story thalt malny people enjoy realding. It often uses words to represent deeper ideals alnd feelings. Paltrick Suskind's "Perfume: The Story of al Murderer" is al well-known book albout al killer who hals al stralnge obsession with different smells. The story talkes plalce in 18th-century Palris alnd uses smells to show importalnt ideals, following the ideals of Ferdinalnd De Salussure albout signs alnd mealning. The waly smell is described in the book alffects how the realder feels alnd aldds to the mood of the story. This palrt of literalry theory caln be studied more. This might include looking alt whalt others halve written on the topic, defining key terms, deciding how to conduct resealrch, alnd dralwing conclusions. The informaltion for this study caln come from the book itself, als well als the setting alnd issues shown in the story. Daltal alnallysis maly include simplifying the daltal, showing it in al clealr waly, alnd malking conclusions balsed on whalt it tells us. In summalry, "Perfume: The Story of al Murderer" provides al speciall look alt how smells alre used in storytelling, following ideals from Salussure's theory albout signs alnd mealnings.
