Abstract

Background: Stafne bone defect is an uncommon, well-defined lingual cortical depression of the mandible, most often discovered incidentally as a unilocular radiolucency in the posterior region, and is regarded as a benign developmental anomaly related to soft-tissue inclusion, particularly salivary glands. Classic lesions typically occur below the inferior alveolar canal in middle-aged male patients, are asymptomatic, and do not require surgical treatment; however, anterior variants located in the premolar region are rare and frequently mimic odontogenic cysts on panoramic radiographs.Objective: The purpose of this case report is to highlight the diagnostic challenge of an anterior variant of Stafne bone defect and demonstrate the importance of advanced imaging in differentiating it from odontogenic lesions to avoid unnecessary surgery.Case: A 60-year-old edentulous male patient underwent panoramic radiography as part of a pre-prosthetic evaluation. The image revealed a well-defined radiolucent area in the edentulous mandible, leading to a provisional diagnosis of a residual cyst.Outcome: Further evaluation with Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) was performed. The three-dimensional images revealed a well-circumscribed lingual cortical depression in continuity with the mandibular cortex. There was no evidence of buccolingual expansion, root resorption, or features of an intraosseous cystic cavity. These imaging characteristics confirmed that the radiolucency represented a static bone concavity rather than a space-occupying lesion..Conclusion: The lesion's location and specific imaging characteristics were consistent with a Stafne bone defect. The use of CBCT was definitive in excluding a residual cyst, thereby preventing an unnecessary surgical intervention and confirming the benign, static nature of the defect

Abstract

Background: The maxillary canine is often more difficult to manage orthodontically compared to other teeth.Objective: This study aims to evaluate additional factors affecting the success of Forced Eruption treatment for impacted maxillary canines, emphasizing the importance of timely and appropriate therapeutic strategies.Method: This descriptive-analytical study evaluated the records of 52 patients diagnosed with maxillary canine impaction. Data sources included Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images and initial and final panoramic radiographs available in the patients' files. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software.Outcome: The study revealed a significant relationship between the depth of impaction and the success of Forced Eruption treatment for maxillary impacted canines (p < 0.05). However, no significant associations were found between the success of the treatment and variables such as age, gender, position of impaction, or the available space in the maxillary arch. These findings suggest that depth of impaction is a critical factor influencing treatment outcomes, while other demographic and positional factors may not significantly affect success rates.Conclusion: Patients with a lower depth of maxillary canine impaction experience better outcomes with Forced Eruption treatment

Abstract

Background: One of the most common periodontal diseases is periodontitis. Periodontitis is a disease of periodontal tissue damage caused by the accumulation of microorganisms in the subgingival plaque that can cause periodontal pockets, loss of attachment, bleeding in the gingiva, and tooth mobility. Splinting can stabilize mobility teeth in periodontitis.Objective: this case report aims to discuss the treatment of extracoronal splinting, with fiber- reinforced composites in patients with chronic periodontitis accompanied by tooth mobility.Case: A 60-year-old man complained of dirty and rough teeth 1 year ago. Complaints are painless and never treated. The patient has a history of hypertension and daily smoking habits. After scaling and root planning treatment, grade 1 tooth mobility occurs in teeth 31, 41, and 42. One week later, an examination was carried out but showed no improvement, so splint treatment with fiber- reinforced composites was carried out on teeth 33 to 43. One week after the splinting treatment, an examination was carried out and the result was no tooth mobility in teeth 31, 41, and 42.Discussion: Splinting with fiber-reinforced composites has been shown to improve tooth stability is non- corrosive, easy to apply, requires low to medium cost, and has high aesthetics. Composite fiber materials have advantageous physical properties as they increase the flexural strength of composite resins.Conclusion: splint treatment with fiber-reinforced composites successfully stabilized tooth mobility in teeth 31, 41, and 42

Abstract

Background: Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues that support the teeth, triggered by bacterial plaque, which leads to the ongoing and gradual destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. Gingival recession and periodontal pockets are characteristics of clinical features. The disparity in the interaction between bacteria and the host's immune response can inhibit fibroblast proliferation, resulting in periodontal tissue damage. Important phytochemical components found in curry leaves (Murraya koenigii) include flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and saponins. Flavonoids and saponins effectively inhibit the growth of bacterial colonies in periodontal pockets.Objective: The research aims to assess the effect of curry leaf extract gel on the level of fibroblast cells in periodontitis.Methods: A posttest-only control group design was used in the experimental laboratory. Subjects were categorized into 3 categories: a treatment group (10% curry leaf extract), a positive control (metronidazole), and a negative control (aquades). The number of fibroblast cells was statistically assessed with the one-way ANOVA method and the LSD post-hoc test.Outcome: The results showed a significant difference in the number of fibroblast cells stimulated by periodontitis in each group.Conclusion: There was significant variance in fibroblast count between the groups.

Abstract

Background: Ameloblastoma is a tumor with a relatively high incidence in the jaws. Based on biological behavior, ameloblastomas may be benign or malignant, while radiographic findings further classify them as unicystic or multicystic.Objective: This case report was conducted to identify the similarities and differences between unicystic and multicystic ameloblastoma, focusing on their clinical, radiographic, and histopathological aspects.Case: This report presents two cases involving male patients who were referred to the dental hospital (RSGM) for panoramic radiographic evaluation. Both individuals reported persistent cheek swelling, with Case 1 describing a 19-year-old male who experienced swelling on the right side of the cheek for nearly one year, and Case 2 involving a 43-year-old male with left cheek swelling that had been present for approximately 1.5 years. These cases are included to demonstrate the clinical and radiographic features of the lesions.Discussion: On radiographic evaluation, unicystic and multicystic ameloblastomas shared a radiolucent appearance and jaw involvement; however, they differed in internal structural patterns, locularity, and the definition and cortication of lesion margins.Conclusion: The two cases involved male patients with slowly enlarging, long-standing cheek swelling. Radiographically, both lesions appeared radiolucent, affected the mandibular ramus extending to the temporomandibular joint, and exhibited well-defined, corticated borders with associated cortical destruction, consistent with ameloblastoma. Unicystic ameloblastoma appears as a radiolucent lesion without internal septa and presents with a smoother, well-defined border. In contrast, multicystic ameloblastoma shows internal septa and has a smooth yet less well-defined border

Abstract

Introduction: Consumption of anticoagulant drugs such as warfarin is the main therapy in patients with heart valve disease. Prophylactic antibiotics are recommended for patients with heart disease prior to tooth extraction.Objective: To describe the comprehensive dental management of a patient with a history of heart disease and chronic anticoagulant therapy undergoing multiple tooth extractions.Case: A 67-year-old female patient came to UMY Dental Hospital complaining of discomfort when chewing food because of remaining roots in several of her upper right posterior teeth. This started with a tooth that had cavities and was not treated, causing the crown of the tooth to break little by little on its own. The tooth had hurt about 2 months prior, and she had taken painkillers (Paracetamol). Currently, there are no complaints of pain or other accompanying symptoms. The patient has a history of heart disease since childhood and is currently taking anticoagulant medication (Notisil®). Objective examination showed root residue in teeth 15 and 16, percussion (-), palpation (-), and bitetest (-).Outcome: The patient was given prophylactic antibiotics 60 minutes before tooth extraction and discontinued warfarin 5 days prior to the tooth extraction (as advised by a cardiologist). The extraction was performed smoothly and without complications. The open socket was packed with Spongostan® and sutured using a figure-of-eight technique. On the 14th day post-extraction, the wounds were nearly fully covered, indicating that healing was predominantly in the proliferative phase.Conclusion: Tooth extraction in patients undergoing anticoagulant therapy requires a multidisciplinary approach, involving both the management of anticoagulant medication and clinical strategies such as the administration of prophylactic antibiotics and the application of hemostatic agents like Spongostan® following the extraction.

Abstract

Background: Gingivitis is the earliest stage of periodontal disease, characterized by gingival inflammation, edema, and bleeding. This condition involves infiltration of inflammatory cells, including macrophages, which play a regulatory role through pathogen phagocytosis and pro- inflammatory cytokine secretion. Pineapple core (Ananas comosus L. Merr) contains several bioactive constituents—such as bromelain, flavonoids, and tannins—that have been reported in the literature to exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme abundantly present in pineapple core according to previous studies, is known to modulate inflammatory pathways through cytokine suppression.Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pineapple core extract on macrophage cell counts in gingivitis-induced Wistar rats.Method: A post-test only design was used with 30 male rats allocated into three groups: control (CMC-Na), 12.5% extract, and 25% extract. Gingivitis was induced, followed by three days of treatment. Gingival tissues were processed histologically, and macrophage-like cells were quantified under light microscopy.Outcome: The mean macrophage counts were 27.38 (control), 13.60 (12.5%), and 7.66 (25%), with significant differences among groups (p < 0.05).Conclusion: These findings indicate that pineapple core extract can reduce macrophage infiltration in gingival tissues, and the higher concentration demonstrates a stronger anti-inflammatory effect.

Abstract

Background: Dental and oral health is part of overall health, and one aspect of dental and oral health services is the presence of a dental and oral polyclinic in a hospital. Good health services pay attention to aspects of service quality, consisting of reliability, responsiveness, guarantees, tangible evidence, and empathy.Objectives: This study aims to determine the influence of service quality on patient satisfaction at the dental polyclinic of dr. Soehadi Prijonegoro Hospital, Sragen Regency.Methods: This study uses a concurrent method and a purposive sampling technique with 41 samples. The research variables included the independent variable of service quality and the dependent variable of patient satisfaction levels. The research instrument used was a questionnaire and interview guidelines. Data analysis included validity and reliability tests, as well as Spearman correlation and ordinal regression tests.Outcome: The results of this study showed that the validity and reliability tests had an interval of 0.329, and all items were declared valid. The correlation between service quality and patient satisfaction at dr. Soehadi Prijonegoro Hospital, Sragen Regency, showed a lowest coefficient value of 0.466 and a highest of 0.587. Service quality simultaneously affects patient satisfaction by 99.8%.Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that dental and oral polyclinic patients were very satisfied with the quality of services provided by doctors and nurses at dr. Soehadi Prijonegoro Hospital, Sragen Regency.

Abstract

Introduction: The permanent maxillary central incisor is an anterior tooth with a high risk of developing cavities. If left untreated, cavities can progress to pulp and periodontal diseases, which are indications for endodontic treatment, specifically root canal treatment (RCT). In cases where extensive damage occurs after RCT, a full crown is needed to ensure restoration durability and aesthetics. This can be achieved using a fiber post and a porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crown.Objective: to describe the root canal treatment and PFM crown restoration of tooth 21 with inclination correction to restore proper tooth function and achieve optimal aestheticsCase: A 48-year-old female patient visited RSGMP UNIMUS, complaining of a cavity in her upper left front tooth. The diagnosis for tooth 21 was Acute Apical Endodontitis (AAE) with pulp necrosis and normal apical tissue. The planned treatment included root canal treatment followed by PFM crown restoration with fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) post support.Outcome: The treatment results showed that the tooth functioned well and achieved good aesthetics.Conclusion: Root canal treatment and PFM crown restoration of tooth 21 with inclination correction showed a high success rate. The patient reported no complaints, the PFM crown remained intact without discoloration, adapted well to the surrounding tissues, had a negative palpation test, and showed no signs of traumatic occlusion.

Abstract

Background: This study is based on children aged 10-12 years who chew chocolate-based snacks with high sweetener content, which can trigger dental caries. Chocolate is a type of food that contains carbohydrates, has a soft consistency, and easily sticks to the teeth. This makes residual chocolate difficult to clean, leading to dental plaque, a primary factor in caries. Stevia is an alternative sweetener with antibacterial properties.Objective: This study's objective is to determine the difference in plaque index among children aged 10-12 years after chewing convenience chocolate versus dark chocolate with stevia.Method: This study used a quasi-experimental quantitative research design with a non-equivalent control group design. The sample was selected using purposive sampling. Data collection involved measuring plaque indices after the research subjects were given two treatments: chewing convenience chocolate and chewing dark chocolate with stevia.Outcome: The results showed that the group that chewed convenience chocolate had a higher mean plaque index (25.81) compared to the group that chewed dark chocolate with stevia, which had a lower plaque index (12.94).Conclusion: This study revealed a significant difference in the mean plaque index between groups chewing convenience chocolate and dark chocolate with stevia. The mean plaque index after chewing dark chocolate with stevia was lower than after chewing convenience chocolate.
