Abstract

This study analyzes the use of digital communication strategies in animated films as a significant step toward sustaining the Surabaya dialect, Boso Suroboyoan. It focuses on three main aspects: (1) how animated films portray Boso Suroboyoan, (2) how visual elements in animation reflect cultural values, and (3) how animated films serve as an effective tool for preserving the local language and culture of Boso Suroboyoan. A case study approach was applied, examining animated films that feature Boso Suroboyoan as the primary language and emphasize Surabaya's cultural content. Data collection and analysis were conducted through content analysis, interviews, and public opinion surveys. The findings indicate that animated films using Boso Suroboyoan effectively convey cultural messages in an engaging and educational way. The vocabulary in Jowo Suroboyoan dialogues not only introduces regional language lexicon but also embodies the outspoken, assertive, and spirited character of the Surabaya people. Symbolism and visual elements in animation convey cultural values through narratives, settings, and 3D techniques. The strategic application of digital communication in dialogue and storylines successfully introduces and fosters pride in Surabaya's cultural heritage.

Abstract

Puji-pujian (praise) is the chanting of selawat or dhikr which is usually done during the break between the call to prayer and the ikamah in the mosque/prayer room. This tradition can be called oral literature. The implementation of praise is often found in Indonesia, especially Java. One of them is Surakarta. With the diversity that exists, the implementation of praise in Surakarta apparently reflects tolerance between its citizens. The qualitative research using descriptive qualitative methods examines the implementation of the tradition of praise in Surakarta, especially in Kentingan, Jebres Urban Village, where the population is quite diverse. Data in the researcher’s research were obtained from observations, interviews, and literature study. The results of the research show that there is no conflict or coercion regarding the implementation of praise. If there is a conflict, the parties resolve it amicably until they find a middle ground. This can then be a form of tolerance towards the implementation or absence of the praise tradition.

Abstract

Serat Kridawasita is one of the traditional Javanese literary works that contains criticism of colonialism. This article aims to examine how Serat Kridawasita constructs a discourse of resistance against colonialism through a postcolonial theory approach. The analysis focuses on symbolism, colonial representation, and forms of cultural resistance contained in the text. The results of the study show that Serat Kridawasita becomes an ideological space where identity, nationalism, and veiled criticism of colonial hegemony are affirmed. This study confirms that traditional literature is not merely a moral medium, but also an ideological tool of struggle.

Abstract

Folktales are a medium rich in educational values and play a vital role in character formation and cultural preservation. This study examines the educational and cultural values found in selected folktales from Turkmenistan and Java, highlighting stories such as Yartykulak, Gorogly, Dede Korkut, Gul-Bilbil, Gul-Senuber from Turkmenistan and their parallels in Javanese folktales such as Kancil, Rara Jonggrang, Ande-Ande Lumut, Panji Asmarabangun, and Buto Ijo. The literature and textual analysis show that folktales are not merely a form of entertainment, but also a repository of moral wisdom—conveying values such as bravery, cleverness, loyalty, justice, perseverance, and respect. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study identifies shared and distinct values reflected in the characters, conflicts, and resolutions within each story. The findings indicate that both Turkmen and Javanese folktales carry important lessons on social responsibility, heroism, cultural identity, and ethical behavior. These stories are thus valuable tools for character education, particularly in multicultural and cross-cultural learning settings. Moreover, the study recommends the integration of folktales into character education curricula and the use of digital storytelling platforms to engage younger generations. Preserving and promoting folktales in both traditional and digital formats is crucial to ensuring the transmission of moral and cultural values, fostering an ethical, empathetic, and culturally rooted generation in an increasingly globalized world.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low speaking skills of elementary school students, particularly in terms of expression and confidence. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the Contextual Learning Model combined with role play based on folk tales in improving the speaking skills of students at Mojo 58 Sragen Public Elementary School. This study used a One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design with 26 students (N = 26) as subjects. Data were obtained through speaking ability tests before and after the model was implemented, which were then analyzed using Normalized Gain to measure learning outcome improvement. The results of the analysis showed that the application of the Contextual Learning Model with the integration of videos and role-play provided a significant improvement in students' speaking skills, with a Normalized Gain score of 0.778, which is classified as high according to Hake's criteria. These findings indicate that speaking learning based on real contexts and role-playing activities is effective in building students' communication performance, especially in terms of expression, fluency, and confidence. Based on these results, it is recommended that teachers apply contextual and role-play approaches continuously in language learning activities to foster more natural and meaningful communication skills for elementary school students.
