Abstract

Preeclampsia remains one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in Indonesia and globally. Early detection is essential to prevent further complications. The use of digital media such as WhatsApp Groups has the potential to serve as an effective educational platform for pregnant women, particularly in rural areas with limited access to health information. Objective: To determine the influence of educational media delivered via WhatsApp Group on pregnant women’s ability to perform early detection of preeclampsia in Pulau Tinggi Village. Methods: This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 34 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria, selected through total sampling. Educational interventions were provided through a WhatsApp Group for four weeks. The ability to detect preeclampsia early was measured using a validated questionnaire administered before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test. Results: There was a significant increase in early detection ability after the educational intervention. The mean pretest score was 55.8 ± 7.9, increasing to 83.4 ± 6.8 in the posttest (p < 0.001). Knowledge categories also improved, with the proportion of respondents in the high category rising from 5.9% to 82.4%. Most respondents were aged 20–35 years, had a senior high school education, were multigravida, and were in the second trimester. Conclusion: Health education delivered via WhatsApp Group is proven effective in improving pregnant women’s ability to perform early detection of preeclampsia. This medium offers an accessible, low-cost, and sustainable alternative for maternal health education in rural communities.

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Tract Infection (ARI) is a disease of the upper or lower respiratory tract. This disease is contagious and causes a range of signs and symptoms, from asymptomatic and mild infections to more severe and potentially fatal illnesses, depending on the pathogen. The presence of family members who smoke in the home is a contributing factor to health problems within the family, such as respiratory disorders. Moreover, it may increase the incidence of ARI, especially in toddlers. The study determined the relationship between parental smoking habits and the incidence of ARI in the Integrated Health Post (Posyandu) of Bani Amas Village, Bengkayang. Using a quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach, with a sample of 54 respondents, data were collected by distributing questionnaires and analyzed using the Spearman Rank test. The study showed no relationship between parental smoking habits and the incidence of ARI in toddlers at the Integrated Health Post (Posyandu) of Bani Amas Village, Bengkayang, where the result was a p-value of 0.054 (>0.05). The results of this study indicate that smoking habits are not the only factor that influences the incidence of ARI in toddlers. Still, cigarettes only provide vulnerability to ARI in toddlers because they contain harmful substances that can damage the respiratory system during the developmental stage.

Abstract

Stunting remains a persistent public health problem in Indonesia, especially in densely populated urban areas such as East Jakarta. Health cadres serve as community-level communicators who play a strategic role in promoting nutrition awareness and preventive behaviors. Effective interpersonal communication is therefore essential to ensure message uptake among mothers and caregivers. This study aims to explore how community health cadres utilize interpersonal communication to support stunting prevention efforts in East Jakarta, and to identify the communication strategies, challenges, and enabling factors that influence the effectiveness of their role in promoting child nutrition and health behaviors. The research used is qualitative research. The method of data collection used is data A qualitative study was conducted using a thematic analysis approach. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were carried out with 10 active health cadres selected purposively based on experience and involvement in stunting prevention programs. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase thematic analysis to generate meaningful patterns and themes. Four major themes emerged: 1.Message simplification and contextualization, enabling improved comprehension among families; 2 Empathy and trust-building, which enhance openness and strengthen rapport; 3 Consistency and continuous mentoring, contributing to sustained behavior change; and 4 Challenges in communication, including limited training, workload burden, and community resistance. These themes collectively demonstrate that interpersonal communication is both relational and context dependent. The study highlights that the effectiveness of health cadres in stunting prevention is strongly influenced by interpersonal communication competencies. Strengthening training, supervision, and institutional support is crucial to enhancing communication quality and optimizing community-based stunting prevention efforts.

Abstract

Job satisfaction among nurses is an important indicator of healthcare service quality and is influenced by various organizational and interpersonal factors. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the head nurse’s participative leadership, work engagement, and interpersonal communication with nurses’ job satisfaction in the inpatient units of a private hospital in Jakarta. A quantitative analytic correlational design was employed with a total sample of 214 nurses selected through proportional stratified random sampling. Data were collected using standardized and validated questionnaires measuring participative leadership, work engagement, interpersonal communication, and job satisfaction. The results of multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression demonstrated that participative leadership (OR = 46.5; p = 0.01), work engagement (OR = 13.5; p = 0.04), and interpersonal communication (OR = 14.7; p = 0.03) significantly influenced nurse job satisfaction. Nurses who perceived good participative leadership, high engagement, and effective interpersonal communication were significantly more likely to report job satisfaction. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening participative leadership practices, fostering engagement, and enhancing interpersonal communication to improve job satisfaction and support the creation of a conducive work environment in nursing units.

Abstract

The use of traditional herbal medicine remains common practice in various rural areas of Indonesia, including among pregnant women. Jamu is considered an easily accessible, culturally based alternative healthcare treatment and is believed to provide benefits such as increasing stamina, reducing nausea, and alleviating pregnancy symptoms. However, some active herbal ingredients are known to be metabolized in the liver and have the potential to increase hepatocellular function, especially in specific physiological conditions such as pregnancy. This study aims to analyze the effect of traditional herbal medicine consumption on liver function in pregnant women in rural areas. The study used a cross-sectional design with a sample of 60 pregnant women in their second and third trimesters selected through a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire regarding herbal medicine consumption patterns (type of herbal medicine, frequency, duration of consumption), then laboratory tests were conducted on liver enzyme levels SGOT and SGPT as indicators of hepatic function. As many as 40% of respondents were recorded as consuming herbal medicine regularly (≥3 times per week), with the most common types of herbal medicine being turmeric and tamarind, beras kencur, and temulawak. On average, respondents had had a habit of consuming herbal medicine long before pregnancy. Analysis using the Mann -Whitney test showed a significant difference in SGOT (p = 0.031) and SGPT (p = 0.038) levels between pregnant women who regularly consumed herbal medicine and those who did not. However, the median SGOT and SGPT values in the herbal medicine group remained within normal limits, thus not indicating clinical liver damage. However, this statistically significant increase indicates an additional metabolic burden on the liver due to exposure to the active ingredients of the herbal plant. This study concludes that consumption of traditional herbal medicine has the potential to affect liver function in pregnant women, although the effects have not yet reached pathological levels. Therefore, herbal medicine use during pregnancy should be done wisely, in a controlled manner, and in consultation with a healthcare professional. Further research with a longitudinal design, larger sample sizes, and laboratory analysis of herbal medicine ingredients is recommended to obtain a more comprehensive picture.
