Abstract

The diversity of agricultural commodities in Datar Ajab Village, Hulu Sungai Tengah (HST) Regency presents economic potential. The cultivation of these agricultural commodities is an effort to meet daily needs, but the sale of agricultural commodities by farmers is still dominated by local collectors in the village as an extension before reaching consumers in the market. This study aims to identify the causes and effects of farmers' dependence on collectors in the agricultural commodity supply chain. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach, through observation, interviews, and documentation, and is analyzed using the Manual Data Analysis Procedure (MDAP). The results of the study show that there is a patronage relationship between farmers and collectors, driven by farmers' limited resources, such as operational capital, land ownership, and infrastructure conditions, as well as differences in socioeconomic status. In this relationship, collectors act as patrons who provide protection and assistance, while farmers as clients are morally bound to sell their produce as a form of loyalty. This patronage relationship is also influenced by kinship ties and emotional closeness, which ultimately strengthen farmers' dependence. The research results provide theoretical benefits as an important reference in agricultural sociology studies on the problems experienced by farmers, especially in the distribution of agricultural commodities. Practically, this research can contribute to the agenda in efforts to realize sustainable development that takes into account the distribution conditions of agricultural commodities owned by local farmers.

Abstract

The practice of covert prostitution in entertainment venues such as billiard halls often occurs through the use of nonverbal symbols that are not explicitly acknowledged by the actors involved, particularly score girls. This study aims to analyze the symbols and meanings used by score girls in covert prostitution practices at a billiard venue in Banjarmasin City, South Kalimantan. This research employs a qualitative, phenomenological approach, using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The findings indicate that score girls use symbols such as revealing clothing, body gestures, and verbal terms like “open,” “ST” (short time), and “LT” (long time) as implicit codes to subtly offer sexual services. These symbols are understood within a specific social context of nightlife entertainment venues. Through George Herbert Mead’s theory of symbolic interactionism, it was found that the concepts of mind, self, and society play a role in shaping the social identity of score girls and their role negotiation processes, where their actions are the result of symbolic meaning-making and ongoing social interactions. This research contributes to the reinforcement of symbolic interactionism theory and enriches public understanding of symbolic communication within covert social practices in entertainment settings. Future studies are expected to further explore the dynamics of symbolic interaction in covert prostitution practices in digital spaces or social media as an adaptation to technological developments in communication.

Abstract

Amid the rapid advancement of technology, local traditions such as selamatan leu among the Bajau ethnic community in Rampa Lama Village, Kotabaru Regency, have undergone significant changes and are increasingly threatened with extinction. Many local traditions have experienced transformation or are at risk of disappearing, including selamatan leu (sea thanksgiving ritual) practiced by the Bajau community in Rampa Lama Village, Kotabaru Regency. This study aims to understand the responses of the younger generation to cultural shifts resulting from the dominant use of mobile phones in everyday life. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, utilizing participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the Manual Data Analysis Procedure (MDAP), which includes field notes, transcripts, coding, categories, themes, and memos. The findings reveal four forms of social action within the community: instrumental rational action, value-rational action, affective action, and traditional action. These forms of social action represent the community’s motivations in preserving the selamatan leu tradition. This study highlights the importance of maintaining local traditions in the face of modern challenges posed by the rapid development of digital technology. Academically, this research contributes to expanding studies on social action among coastal communities. Practically, it emphasizes the importance of preserving the selamatan leu tradition and promoting awareness of sustainable marine ecosystem conservation.

Abstract

The existence of customary institutions is a vital instrument in sustaining the lives of indigenous communities based on ancestral cultural values. This study aims to analyze the existence of customary institutions in carrying out their roles and functions within indigenous societies. The research employs a qualitative case-study approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Manual Data Analysis Procedure (MDAP). The findings indicate that customary institutions continue to perform important functions in social life, particularly in regulating the implementation of customary rituals, maintaining social order, and serving as sources of reference for norms and cultural values. However, within cultural dynamics influenced by social change, customary institutions also experience signs of dysfunction, such as a weakened role in environmental management and declining participation among younger generations due to limited knowledge and adaptive capacity. These findings emphasize that the existence of customary institutions is dynamic, capable of generating positive impacts in maintaining identity and social cohesion, yet also potentially producing negative effects if not accompanied by capacity strengthening and role renewal in accordance with contemporary social contexts. This study contributes to the development of sociological knowledge, particularly within the framework of structural functionalism. It further recommends that customary institutions, indigenous communities, and village governments more effectively implement the substantive values of indigenous cultural traditions to maintain ecological balance and preserve the identity of the Dayak Meratus indigenous community.

Abstract

Abstract

Hijab cosplay is a form of self-presentation of Muslim women who present fictional characters through costumes and visual appearance, but still maintain Islamic law, thus reflecting the dynamics of interaction between popular culture and religious identity. This research aims to find out how the self-presentation of hijab cosplay is on the front stage, back stage, and in impression management on the front stage. In this context, impression management is used by actors to show impressions to the audience. This research uses a phenomenological qualitative method with observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. The results showed that in the front stage, hijab cosplay performed the character maximally by paying attention to the aspects of dramaturgy. On the backstage, some maintain consistency, while others show different behavior. As for impression management, it is done through adaptation of appropriate character selection without eliminating religious identity, such as replacing a wig with a hijab, to create the desired self-image. This research contributes a new understanding of hijab cosplay by reading the hijab cosplay stage from the perspective of Erving Goffman's dramaturgy theory as a unique form of self-presentation. The findings can be a reference for future research that wants to examine identity and impression management in the context of popular culture and religiosity.

Abstract

The decline in new car sales in Indonesia has led to an increase in used car buying and selling activities, including the role of Gubang in the distribution process. This study aims to examine the values and norms formed in the relationship between Gubang and showroom owners, as well as how ethics and trust are maintained in the trade relationship. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection techniques were conducted through observation, unstructured interviews, and documentation. The results of this study show that Gubang plays a strategic role in the practice of buying and selling used cars, not only as an intermediary who bridges between showrooms and consumers, but also as an actor who helps maintain the sustainability of social value-based trade relations. In practice, Gubang plays an active role in finding customers and supplying vehicles, relying on the social networks and trust that have been built. Formal contracts do not govern his relationship with showroom owners, but by socially binding unwritten norms, such as maintaining work ethics, not harming the showroom, and not bringing customers to other parties without consent. The values of mutual respect, responsibility, and loyalty become the foundation that binds the cooperation between Gubang and the showroom. This research contributes to the study of sociology, especially on values and norms in informal trade relations. This research contributes to the study of sociology, especially regarding values and norms in informal trade relations. Future research is expected to expand the study of the Gubang profession and its role in supporting the used car buying and selling system practically and academically.

Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Manual Data Analysis Procedure (MDAP). Manual Data Analysis Procedure (MDAP). The results showed, permissive parenting is not a form of parental negligence, but an adaptive response to difficult economic conditions, low levels of parental education, and narrow perceptions of education, as well as a narrow perception of the meaning of education. People parents prefer their children to help with household chores or work at school age rather than continuing their education because school is not school age than to continue their education, because school is not seen as an urgent need or means of social mobility. Children who grow up in this upbringing are deprived of the encouragement, direction, and long-term orientation that they should obtain from the family. The family's failure to socialize also causes educational institutions to lose their power.

Abstract

The limited availability of natural resources in Madura has encouraged its people to migrate and engage in trading activities in major cities such as Banjarmasin in order to sustain their livelihoods. This study aims to describe how Madurese traders at Sentra Antasari Market manage social capital to strengthen their existence in the host society. Using a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, data were collected through observation, unstructured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that Madurese traders possess deeply internalized cultural strengths in their everyday lives, such as values of hard work, frugality, and a strong migrant ethos, which shape a solid social identity and function as adaptive strategies in facing urban economic challenges. Although the social structure formed is informal, it operates effectively through kinship ties and shared regional backgrounds, while their social capital is manifested in three main aspects: trust among community members, collective norms that maintain discipline and solidarity, and active social networks sustained through routine activities such as rotating savings groups and social gatherings. These findings highlight that local culture does not hinder modernization but instead serves as a crucial force in building economic resilience and social harmony in urban spaces, contributing to the development of economic sociology and market ethnography literature and offering practical insights into how social capital strengthens the economic stability of migrant ethnic groups; future research is encouraged to explore the role of social capital in interethnic relations within multicultural market settings.

Abstract

The rise of culinary content on social media has led food influencers to go beyond merely showcasing food visuals, they also craft personal identities to earn audience trust and engagement. This study aims to describe and analyze how the Tiktok account @banjarnyaman builds its branding as a food influencer through various communicative elements such as language style, visuals, voice-over, and distinctive slogans or jargon. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with both primary and secondary data sources, conducted in Banjarmasin City, focusing primarily on Tiktok as a digital platform. Data collection techniques include participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings reveal that @banjarnyaman successfully constructs a strong and consistent self-image through expressive voice-overs, a mix of Banjar and casual language, and a unique slogan, “Endol Takendol Kendol,” that fosters emotional closeness with the audience. The personal branding displayed is a communicative process shaped by local preferences and digital habits. The audience responds positively and feels emotionally connected, while MSMEs perceive the account as a credible promotional platform. These findings are analyzed using Eriyanto’s branding theory and Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding theory to understand the formation of self-image and the meanings interpreted by the audience. Future research is suggested to explore other food influencers’ strategies in building cross-segment audience connections and to examine the broader impact on consumption patterns in society.
