Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the Process Genre Model (PGM) to improve the narrative writing ability of tenth-grade students (Class X1) at SMA Negeri 11 Ambon. The research employed a classroom action research design conducted in two cycles, each comprising planning, action, observation, and reflection. Students’ writing performance was assessed using a holistic scoring rubric, focusing on content and organization, language use, vocabulary, and mechanics. The results showed significant improvement in students’ narrative writing across the two cycles. In Cycle 1, the majority of students were categorized at the Beginning and Developing levels, while in Cycle 2, 60% of students reached the Expanding level, indicating they had met the indicator of success. The Process Genre Model proved effective in guiding students through a structured writing process while enhancing their understanding of narrative genre conventions. Despite initial challenges, such as confusion in tense use, subject-verb agreement, and mechanical errors, students demonstrated clear progress in content organization, grammar accuracy, and overall writing coherence. The study concludes that the Process Genre Model is a powerful pedagogical tool for improving EFL students’ writing ability and recommends its integration into writing instruction at the secondary level.

This study examines the use of metaphorical expressions in Coldplay's song lyrics. The data source were taken from ten songs of Coldplay’s various albums. The goal of this study is to identify the most common form of metaphorical language used in Coldplay’s song lyrics. The qualitative descriptive method was employed in this study. The results of this research show that the total number of figurative language expressions used in Coldplay’s song lyrics were 52 expressions. There were 12 metaphor, 11 personification, 8 hyperbole, 8 symbol, 7 synecdoche and 6 simile. The most dominant type of figurative language expression found in this study was metaphor. Therefore, it is important that teachers can bring this types of figurative language in their classrooms in order for students to get used to using and understand them.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effect of animation media on increasing the mastery of German vocabulary among students at SMA Negeri 1 Seram Barat. The study employed a quantitative methodology, utilising a quasi-experimental design that included an experimental group and a control group. The research sample consisted of the control group, class XI.5, and the experimental group, class XI.1. There were thirty students enrolled in each class. The data collection technique used pre- and post-tests with a question sheet consisting of 20 questions as a collection instrument. The experimental class used animation media for learning, while the control class used static pictures. Data analysis procedures were conducted using SPSS to perform normality tests, homogeneity tests, and hypothesis tests employing parametric statistical methods, namely the independent samples t-test and effect size test. The study's findings revealed a difference in the average mastery of German vocabulary scores between the group that used animation media and the group that relied on conventional whiteboard media. The data collection approach employed pre- and post-tests utilising 20-item question sheets as instruments for gathering data. The analysis indicated that the experimental class using animation media surpassed the control class in average mastery of German vocabulary scores, achieving mean scores of 16.23 and 14.53, respectively. The significant value (Sig.) in Levene's test of variance is 0.268, which is greater than 0.05. This result indicates that the variance of the data between the experimental and control groups is equal or homogeneous. The interpretation of the output table of the independent samples t-test is based on the assumption of equal variances, which is indicated by the Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.001, which is less than 0.05. It can be concluded that the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) is accepted. This indicates that there is a significant difference in the average level of mastery of German vocabulary among the students in the experimental class, who used animation media, and those in the control class, who used static picture media. The effect size calculated using Cohen's d yielded a significant value of 0.922929, indicating a large effect size classification. The deployment of animation media has been demonstrated to be an effective pedagogical instrument, enabling a significant advancement in students' proficiency in the German vocabulary at SMA Negeri 1 Seram Barat.

Abstract

The research context in this study is to find a correlation between students' learning styles and their achievement in speaking courses. This study aims to determine whether or not there is a correlation between students' learning styles (as variable X) and their achievement in speaking class (as variable Y) in odd-semester students in 2023 at Pattimura University. There were 54 students taken as the sample of this study who were determined by using simple random sampling. The collected data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and the instruments used were students’ speaking achievement and questionnaire. The results showed that the visual learning style had the highest mean value among the three types. Based on rxy: 0.624, the correlation between students’ learning styles and their speaking achievement is strong. Speaking fluency is a key indicator of language learning, and understanding one's learning style can help students learn more efficiently and successfully.
