Abstract

The objective of study was to find out whether there was any significant different between students’ writing skill who were taught by using peer editing techique to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Pagar Alam and those who were not. The population of this reserach was all tenth grader of SMA N Pagar Alam. The total number of sample was 72 students which were divided into experimental class and control class the sample was taken by using purposive sampling.Quasi Expremental design was applied in this research. In collecting the data written test was used. The calculation of the independent sample t-test show that tobt was 4.377 The level of significant of 0,05 in two tailed testing df 70. The critical value of t-table was 2,030. Based on the result, the alternative hypothesis would be accepted and the null hypothesis would be rejected. It meant that tobt higher than ttab. It meant that the application of Peer Editing could increase students’ speaking achievement of eighth grader of SMA Negeri 1 Pagar Alam.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze students' difficulties in reading comprehension at SMPN 22 Jambi. This is a qualitative research. The technique of data collection used in this research is observation and interviews. The subjects in this study were students of class VIII G at SMPN 22 Jambi. The results of this study indicate that the difficulties faced by class VIII G students in reading comprehension are four difficulties. Firstly, students have difficulty in understanding complexity of grammar. Secondly, the students has difficulty in knowing certain vocabulary when understanding reading. Thirdly, students have difficulty in using reading strategies, and the last one the students have difficulty in concentrations.

Abstract

The students used different strategies in their learning process in order to make their learning process enjoyable and effective. Here the researcher conducted research with a purpose to identify the learning strategies in writing essay used by the students of English Education Program. This is a qualitative research and used case study as research method. The subject of the research was 22 students who have good score in writing essay. The data of this research are the result of interview with students and documentation. The research finding showed that the students used six learning strategies in writing essay, memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies, and social strategies. The students used all of strategy in their writing essay process but different way.

Abstract

This research aims to find out and analyze the models used by students in reading comprehension. This research was conducted in semester V, majoring in English education, The State Islamic University of Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. Which is located at JL. Jambi Ma. Bulian KM.16 Duren River Intersection, Kab. Ma.Jambi. Researcher used descriptive qualitative methods, and found the models used by students when reading or when being interviewed. The subjects in this study were class B, totaling 28 students, which focused on 6 students to be interviewed. Research methods of data collection using observation, documentation, and interviews. When, in the interview, the researcher found answers based on the formulation of the problem. Researcher found a model that is often used by students when understanding reading. This study uses two models in reading comprehension, first the Top-Down Model and the second Bottom-Up Model. In this study, the model most often used by students when understanding a text is the Top-Down model, while the one that is least used is the Bottom-Up Model. The top-down model can be concluded that the reader's knowledge, experience, and intelligence are needed as a basis for reading comprehension. The bottom-up model is a process that involves accuracy, detail, and identification of letters, words, spelling patterns, and other language units

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the difficulties that English instructors face when working with pupils in the seventh grade at Junior High School 18 in Jambi. A qualitative descriptive method was utilized throughout the course of this research. For the purpose of gathering data for this investigation, the researchers utilized observation sheets as well as interview sheets. Based on the findings of the data collection, the researchers discovered that there are various obstacles for teachers to overcome when teaching English to students in the seventh grade at Junior High School 18 Jambi. Dealing with kids, the amenities in schools, and even other teachers can provide a number of difficulties. The challenges include a lack of student interest in learning English, a lack of basic knowledge of students about English lessons, the use of a student's mother tongue when learning English, facilities at school, teacher unfamiliarity in technology, and insufficient time lesson hours due to the Covid-19 pandemic that is happening right now.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the classroom management techniques utilized by the English teacher at the ninth grade level at the state junior high school 7 in Jambi. The descriptive qualitative research approach was utilized in this study, and the methods of data collection were observation, interviewing, and documentation. During the pre-activity phase, the teacher ensured that the students were prepared for the activity by ensuring that they were comfortable. The instructor also organized the seating for the students, ensured that the whiteboard and any other necessary equipment was in the appropriate location, and managed the students by providing a different manner of instruction at each meeting. During the process of learning, the instructor has the ability to foster an environment that is conducive to learning and can construct things that are constructive in order to achieve the best possible results from the learning process.

Abstract

This research is about students who have some problems in speaking English. This research was conducted at the Vocational High School Al-inayah Tebo. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence students’ difficulties in learning English skills. The design of this research used qualitative descriptive method. The subjects of this research were students and teachers of eleventh grade at the Vocational High School Al-inayah Tebo. The research data were collected using observation and interviews. The result showed that students experienced several problems that were influenced by their psychological factors in speaking English, such as : Lack of motivation, Anxiety, Lack of confidence, Shyness, Fear of making mistake, Learning environment Factors, Performance condition factors. From these problems, the most dominant factor was fear of making mistakes. Most of the students stated that they were afraid to speak because they could not pronounce it. Most of them are afraid if they make mistake so they better not speak English.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out morphological errors made by students of SMP Negeri 18 Batanghari in writing recount text. This is descriptive qualitative research, the data were collected by documentation and analysed by Surface Strategy Taxonomy. This research revaled that there are four types of errors with the total number 58 errors made by the students in writing recount text. Omission error which consists of three categories of omission errors i.e. omission of plural, auxiliary verb, gerund, with the total number of errors are 8 or 13,56%, addition error includes four categories of addition errors i.e. addition of gerund, plural, pronoun, noun, with the total number of errors are 8 or 13,56%, misformation error that consist of misformation error of tense with the total number of errors are 38 or 66,10%, and the last misordering error that consist of misordering of spelling with the total number of errors are 4 or 6,78%.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the implementation of the English summative test for the twelfth- grade students at SMAN 4 Tebo from the students‟ and English teacher‟s perception. This paper attempts to display several impacts of English summative test to the students. This was a descriptive qualitative study where the researchers conducted an in-depth interview and distributed questionnaires to gather the data. Participants in this study were an English teacher and several twelfth-grade students. There were positive and negative washback from the analysis of teacher's perceptions and students' perceptions about summative tests. It can be concluded that the test only helps the students to pass the English summative test which was considered as a negative washback. Furthermore, the process of teaching which was oriented to achieve the four language skills stated incompetence was constituted as positive washback.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the strategies used by English teachers in teaching reading comprehension and how they apply these strategies. This research was designed as descriptive qualitative research. The research was conducted at SMAN 02 Muaro Jambi. The participants of this research were three English teachers who taught in the tenth (X) MIPA grade of the school. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic so, each English teachers had two meetings observed by the researcher. The research instrument is an observation and interview. The instrument used is to find out the strategies used and how the English teachers applies the strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The results of the data were analyzed by; checklist observations and field notes. The results showed that the teacher used several strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The strategies are Translation strategy, Scaffolding strategy, and Question and Answer Relationship Strategy. Encourage the use of dictionaries, rereading to assess comprehension, understanding in certain tasks, and asking questions for specific information strategies applied in implementing reading comprehension in the school. This is evidenced by the motivation of students, students’ attention, and the ease of teachers in teaching and learning process
