Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using a diary as a medium to improve students’ skills in writing a recount text. This study used quantitative methods using quasi-experimental research with non-equivalent control group design. The samples used in this study were 37 students in the experimental class and 38 students in the control class. Data were collected by conducting pre-test and post-test. This research used non-parametric tests (Wilcoxon) because the data were not normally distributed. Then the result of the hypothesis should be lower than0.05. Based on the result from the hypothesis, the data analysis showed that the value of Asymp.Sig (2-tailed) was 0.000. It can be concluded that the working hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, while the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Also, the mean score of the post-test in the experimental class (which was 76.22) was higher than that of the post-test in the control class (which was 63.39). It means that the use of a diary in writing activities brought benefits to the students’ writing skills. Moreover, the students became more creative, fluent, and enthusiastic in learning and expressing themselves.

The researcher hopes that it can help students to enrich their knowledge about learning translation. The methodology of this study was qualitative in case study design. The data was obtained from student tests. Researchers also conducted interviews to find out the source of the translation error. It analyzed the data and calculated each error with frequency and percentage. The respondents of this study were English Foreign Language students of Class TBI-E 2016 of UIN SMH Banten. They made some errors when they translated text from Indonesian into English. The researcher found that each error was a syntax error (68.13%), then a semantic error (31.87%). Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the eighth graders’ communication strategies in English classroom activities at SMP Negeri 3 Kalibening. This research conducted a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The observational data were collected by using a video and audio recorder, observational sheet, and triangulated by structured interview. The data analysis procedures consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification by Miles & Huberman’s (1994) framework. The Communication Strategies (CSs) taxonomy proposed by Celce-Murcia et al. (1995) was used as references to identify and classify types of CSs. The analysis revealed that the learners employed 5 types of CSs: avoidance or reduction strategy, achievement or compensatory strategy, stalling or time gaining strategy, self-monitoring strategy, and interactional strategy, with 11 sub-types of those categories in classroom discussion, group discussion, and group presentation activities. The findings also showed that the learners employed CSs to compensate for their linguistics problems and keep the communication going while participating in English classroom activities. This research made a valuable contribution in introducing communication strategies and increasing students' awareness to use English in real-life situations.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the process of incidental vocabulary learning through animated films, to know what conditions students learn incidental vocabulary through animated films, and to know what makes students successful in learning incidental vocabulary through movie-watching. This study uses a qualitative case study design with four 8th grade student participants and 1 English teacher at SMPN 1 Bojonegara. The researchers conducted observations and interviews to investigate all activities and conducted interviews to find more in-depth research results in their English vocabulary learning. The findings of this study indicate that some students already have several lists of vocabulary in their memory so that they can acquire familiar and newly acquired vocabulary. Watching animated films is very influential in acquiring incidental vocabulary because they unconsciously become active in exploring new vocabulary while watching them. However, students are still not interested in learning English, because they are not used to using animated films and are not used to exploring vocabulary because they are not used to doing it in everyday life.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the extent to which assessment tasks (ATs) and intended learning outcomes (ILOs) in Phonetics & Phonology (EPP) and English Morphology & Syntax (EMS) courses of ELESP are well aligned, and how their alignment with the knowledge (KD) and cognitive process dimension (CPD) is. Deductive qualitative content analysis techniques were implemented on the RPS document and assessment tools. It was found that 83% of the ATs in the EPP course are well-aligned with the ILOs. They support the students’ ability to Remember (8,82%), Understand (20,59%), and Apply (41,18%) the Conceptual (82,35%) and Procedural (17,65%) knowledge, while Analyze and Evaluate cover 2,94% and 26,47% respectively. However, the ATs tested students’ ability to Understand (25%) and Apply (75%) Conceptual (95%), and Metacognitive (5%) knowledge resulting in a misaligned teaching and learning exercise. In the EMS course, three out of six items (50%) of ATs are partially aligned, while only one AT (17%) is well-aligned with the ILOs. The ILOs support the students’ ability to Understand (50%) Conceptual (66,67%) and Metacognitive (33,33%) knowledge while the Analysis covers 50%. However, the ATs tested students’ ability to Understand (66,67%) and Apply (33,33%) Conceptual (100%) knowledge was misaligned.

Out of 36 English learning materials, only 16 English learning materials seem to be incorporated with digital literacy indicators, while some others didn't even incorporate digital literacy at all. Digital literacy in learning materials is incorporated in many ways; instruction (43 occurrences), task (31 occurrences), text (8 occurrences), and last is the provision of links (3 occurrences).
