Abstract

Digital literacy is a critical element of multiliteracy framework required to thrive in digital era and perceived as cross-curricular competencies, yet it is not adequately addressed in English language teaching. This paper explores the traits of the authentic academic digital practices in the course outlines of English language skills conducive for digital literacy development, examines the extent to which digital literacy are infused in the authentic academic digital practices of the English courses and proposes the procedure of infusing digital literacy in the authentic academic digital practices of English language teaching. The study employs content analysis to address the data—the traits of authentic academic digital practices in fifty-five course outlines of English language skills subjects from six English Language Education and English Literature Study Programs in Jakarta and West Java. The findings recognize the traits of authentic academic digital practices in the digital academic products, such as the answers to open-/closed-ended questions, essays, presentation slides, papers, videos, podcasts, recorded audio-visual presentations, and reports diversely used across the courses. These digital academic products are used merely as the media in which English is used; only English proficiency is highlighted. The underpinning digital competencies to create the media, the media creation process and the media as digital academic products are not sufficiently addressed and measured. Digital literacy is infused in the authentic academic digital practices of English language teaching through five stages of identifying the components of digital literacies and the authentic academic digital practices and products, analysing the descriptors of digital literacies components pertaining to authentic academic digital practices and products, integrating the descriptors of digital literacies into learning outcomes, embedding digital literacies into academic products, employing authentic academic digital practices in the learning process, and assessing digital literacies as cross-curricular competencies

Abstract

AbstractThe current study scrutinizes the representation of actors and goals of transitivity system in the introduction sections of theses (ISoT) composed by undergraduate students in reference to that of the introduction sections of research articles (ISoRA) considered as the target writings in the academic discourse of knowledge building. 738 English ranking clauses from 10 English-field ISoT and 694 from 10 ISoRA of TESOL Quarterly were analysed for their material processes as well as their participants and circumstances. The analysis was executed with the tables of analysis adapted from Halliday’s experiential meaning framework. The analysis reveals that in the material processes of ISoRA previous studies and previous researchers instead of current studies and current researchers are more frequently employed as actors. Contrary, in their ISoT counterpart, the latter outnumber the former. The analysis also finds that goals in the material processes of ISoT in comparison with its ISoRA counterpart still lack previous findings. Overall, the representation of actors and goals in the material processes of ISoT still needs lexical resources that underpin the process of knowledge building. This has been confirmed by the tendency of actors and goals of ISoT to represent its study undertaken, compared with its ISoRA counterpart focusing more on previous related studiesKeywords: actors, goals, material process, transitivity system, ISoT, ISoRA

Abstract

Speaking English skill has been trending in the mastery of foreign languages since the 19th century. However, at the beginning of the emergence of foreign language teaching in Indonesia, mastery of English speaking skills was only seen as an issue of formal learning outcomes in which English is a cumpolsory subject at the secondary school level. This condition led to the prestige of mastering English speaking skills starting to decline since the beginning of the 20th century where learning technology was increasingly sophisticated and brought formal learners of foreign languages on their own paths to master it. By using the Multiple Case Study, the issue that is the most underlying the students’ achievement of the English speaking skills mastery, how theylearnto achievethe skills, and how to keep on going on the skills were investigated. 10 informants were involved consisting of 7 active students and 3 alumni at and from UniversitasSembilanbelas November Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi. Data were collected systematically through in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and documentation. Data were analyzed by applying six steps of Auerbach& Silverstein's analysis. The result revealed that a sense of liking was the most underlying issue in the informants’ achievement in English speaking skills, especially the past sense of liking. The result also revealed that the informants had a unique way in learning the English speaking skills, it was in an unpredictable way; they learned whenever and wherever they like, according to their own desire or willingness or pleasure, situational and curious – based, and free from formal regulations.
