Abstract

This study examines the implementation of hadith concerning teacher-student relations within the context of Islamic education at STIBA Makassar. The focus of the research is on how the values embedded in the hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are applied in the interactions between lecturers and students on campus. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a hadith science and case study approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that teacher-student relations at STIBA Makassar are grounded in the principles of adab (proper etiquette), compassion, and respect, as taught in the hadiths. Character-building programs and the emotional closeness between lecturers and students are key examples of this hadith implementation. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the significance of harmonious relationships in Islamic education and offers practical guidance for educational institutions on incorporating hadith values in academic interactions.

Abstract

The hadiths which mention the nature of Allah Swt.'s "laughter" are part of a complex discussion in Islamic theological discourse, especially in the study of Asmā' wa Ṣifāt. This characteristic is included in the category of khabariyyah (based on news) characteristics which outwardly resemble the actions of creatures. This research aims to examine in depth the hadiths that mention Allah's laughter, the validity of their sanad, the meaning they contain, as well as the approach of the scholars in interpreting them. Using a literature study method and a descriptive-analytical approach, this paper shows the diversity of approaches between the Salaf and Khalaf groups in understanding this nature. On the one hand, a literal understanding is accepted within the limits of tanzih (purification from likeness), and on the other hand, there is a more rationalistic approach to takwil. This study emphasizes the importance of the principle of bilā kayf and caution in understanding the nature of Allah in order to avoid deviations from the faith.

Abstract

This study examines the hadiths concerning remaining seated after the Fajr prayer until sunrise and performing two units of prayer afterward, commonly known as the Ishraq prayer. It focuses on two main issues: the authenticity of the related hadiths and whether the Ishraq prayer constitutes an independent act of worship or is part of the Duha prayer. Employing a qualitative library research method, the study utilizes takhrij and isnad-matan analysis on hadiths collected from the Kutub al-Tis‘ah and other major hadith sources. The findings indicate that the hadiths regarding remaining seated after Fajr and performing two units of prayer after sunrise are thabit and authentic when considered separately. However, the narrations linking both acts with the specific virtue of earning a reward equivalent to Hajj and ‘Umrah remain disputed due to weaknesses in their chains of transmission. Thus, the Ishraq prayer should not be viewed as a distinct form of worship but rather as an early-time Duha prayer. Both practices are authentically established when performed independently, while claims of special merit require cautious scholarly consideration in hadith evaluation.

Abstract

This article discusses the development of Hadith studies in Southeast Asia, emphasizing the historical transmission, intellectual networks, and academic transformation of the discipline. The study aims to analyze the condition and progression of Hadith scholarship in the region and to explore the contribution and dedication of Southeast Asian scholars in preserving and advancing the field. Using a qualitative approach through library research, this study examines classical and contemporary literature, including the works of early scholars such as Nuruddin ar-Raniri, Abd ar-Rauf al-Fansuri, and Mahfudz at-Tarmasi, as well as recent institutional developments in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. The findings reveal that Hadith studies in Southeast Asia evolved from traditional oral transmission and pesantren-based education into a more systematic and academic discipline in higher education institutions. Moreover, the integration of modern methodologies—such as hermeneutical, contextual, and digital approaches—demonstrates the adaptability of Hadith studies to current scientific and societal challenges. This research contributes to Islamic studies by providing a comprehensive understanding of the continuity and renewal of Hadith scholarship in the Southeast Asian intellectual landscape.

Abstract

This study examines the moral values of character formation as reflected in the Prophet’s hadiths within Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. It arises from the contemporary crisis of morality and character, emphasizing the need to revitalize prophetic ethics and spiritual values in Islamic education. The aim of this research is to describe the concept of character formation in the Prophet’s traditions, identify key moral values, and analyze their relevance to modern character education. Employing a qualitative method with a thematic (mawḍū‘ī) approach, primary data were collected from Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and supported by secondary literature on hadith interpretation and Islamic education. Data were analyzed descriptively and contextually to uncover the relationship between moral values and practical character education. The findings reveal that the hadiths highlight fundamental virtues such as honesty (ṣidq), trustworthiness (amānah), patience (ḥilm), and humility (tawāḍu‘) as the foundation of a noble Muslim personality. These values establish harmony between the human–God relationship (ḥabl min Allāh) and interpersonal ethics (ḥabl min al-nās). Theoretically, this research enriches thematic hadith studies in the discipline of Islamic education; practically, it contributes to developing a hadith-based framework for moral and character education relevant to the challenges of the modern era.

Abstract

This study examines the semantic meaning of the term tarbiyah and its various derivatives in the Prophetic hadith, as well as their implications for the concepts of Islamic education and learning. Although the term tarbiyah has been widely employed in contemporary Islamic educational discourse, prevailing interpretations often rely primarily on terminological definitions without tracing its lexical and contextual semantic structures within hadith as an authoritative primary source of Islam. This study aims to analyze the etymological roots, derivative forms, and semantic expansions of tarbiyah in hadith, including verbal forms such as tarubbu, yurabbī, yarubbānī, and the expression yurabbī al-nās, as well as nominal forms such as rabb, rabbuhā, and rabbāniyyīn. The research adopts a library-based qualitative approach, employing semantic-linguistic analysis and the taḥlīlī method to examine relevant hadith texts. The findings reveal that the concept of tarbiyah in hadith encompasses six core meanings: (1) preservation and care (ḥifẓ wa riʿāyah), (2) management and development (tanmiyah wa ṣiyānah), (3) education and instruction (taʿlīm wa taʾdīb), (4) guidance and leadership (taujīh wa siyādah), (5) perfection and cultivation (takmīl wa inhmāk), and (6) gradual educational development (tadarruj fī al-taʿlīm). These findings affirm that tarbiyah in hadith is not merely cognitive in nature but represents a comprehensive process that progressively nurtures human potential toward moral and ethical perfection. This study contributes to strengthening the conceptual foundations of Islamic education by restoring the meaning of tarbiyah to its semantic roots and prophetic praxis.

Abstract

This study examined the scholarly status and contributions of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in the science of ʿilal (hidden defects in hadith), one of the most intricate and challenging disciplines of hadith studies. The research aimed to highlight his position among hadith critics and to analyze his methodological approach in identifying subtle defects through an inductive and analytical study of his works and teaching sessions. The study demonstrated that Ibn Hajar served as a bridge between early and later scholars, adhering to the methodology of leading critics such as al-Bukhari and al-Daraqutni, while refining, explaining, and weighing their opinions. His engagement with ʿilal is evident in both theoretical and applied works, particularly in Fath al-Bari and al-Nukat ʿala Ibn al-Salah. The research concluded that Ibn Hajar is among the foremost later scholars who significantly preserved and advanced the science of ʿilal.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the concept of hadith authentication (takhrij) and its steps, including its formulation according to the established chain of transmission (madhar), as well as the steps for authenticating and formulating variant hadiths according to the established chains of transmission. The research employs an inductive-analytical methodology enriched by practical applications. The findings are as follows: 1- The concept of hadith authentication involves identifying the location of a hadith in its original sources and, when necessary, determining its degree of authenticity. 2- The steps of hadith authentication according to the established chain of transmission involve collecting the various chains of transmission from different sources, identifying the central chain of transmission (madhar) – the narrator at whom the chains converge – determining the type of variation (such as variations between the chain being raised and stopped, or substitution and alteration), counting the number of narrators from each chain of transmission, and authenticating each chain separately as if it were an independent hadith. The steps for formulating the hadith include identifying and stating the central chain of transmission, identifying and explaining the variation and its type, counting the number of narrators from each chain of transmission, and authenticating each chain separately as if it were an independent hadith. 3- The steps for tracing the chain of transmission of a hadith with differing chains of narrators involve gathering the various narrations of the hadith through tracing, updating the chain of transmission of the original hadith (the one closest to the Companion of the Prophet), and identifying the secondary chains of transmission from the original chain. This process also includes determining the type of difference, identifying the number of narrators on the original chain for each version, identifying the secondary chains of transmission from the original chain for each version, and tracing each version separately. The steps for formulating the hadith are the same: updating the chain of transmission of the original hadith (the one closest to the Companion of the Prophet), identifying the secondary chains of transmission from the original chain, determining the type of difference, identifying the number of narrators on the original chain for each version, identifying the secondary chains of transmission from the original chain for each version, and identifying the type of difference within these secondary chains.

Abstract

This research aims to introduce Abu Nu'aym al-Isfahani and conduct a descriptive study of his book, "The History of Isfahan." The research employed both inductive and descriptive methodologies. It concluded that Abu Nu'aym was the Imam, the memorizer of hadith, Ahmad ibn Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Ishaq ibn Musa ibn Mihran al-Mihrani, known as Abu Nu'aym. There is some disagreement regarding the exact date of his birth. He traveled to various regions in pursuit of knowledge, studying under numerous prominent hadith scholars and experts in the field. Subsequently, a large number of hadith scholars studied under him, directly hearing from him and transmitting his narrations and writings. His works encompassed a wide range of subjects, including hadith sciences, biographies, history, asceticism, spiritual refinement, and creed. Initially a Sufi, he later renounced his former beliefs and died adhering to the Salafist creed. His book, *Tarikh Isfahan* (History of Isfahan), contains a wealth of texts with their chains of transmission, as well as a vast amount of scholarly material compiling the history of Isfahan. It is distinguished by the abundance of sources that drew upon and quoted from this book. These quotations demonstrate the author's high standing in the field of biographical evaluation (ilm al-rijal), particularly concerning the scholars of Isfahan. There are points of agreement and points of disagreement between Abu al-Shaykh al-Isfahani's Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin bi-Isfahan wa-al-Waridin 'alayha (Biographical Dictionary of Hadith Scholars in Isfahan and Those Who Came to It) and Abu Nu'aym al-Isfahani's Tarikh Isfahan.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the content, implementation and impact of the hadith of the Prophet SAW. regarding the use of the sutrah in prayer in the Wahdah Islamiyah environment. This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach and a hadith approach as a basis for text analysis and social reality. The results of the research show that the hadiths about the sutrah emphasize the strong recommendation to use the sutrah when praying, both when staying and traveling. The hadith content also displays the dimensions of maqāṣidiyah, such as maintaining the honor of prayer, preventing disturbances, and creating a prayer space that is conducive to achieving solemnity. In the Wahdah Islamiyah environment, the use of the sutrah has become an integral part of the culture of worship, which is instilled through halaqah, thematic studies, and the example of preachers. Cadres not only offer prayers for themselves, but also show the spirit of ta'āwun in helping others in worship. This research opens up space for the development of socio-cultural based hadith studies, especially in bringing to life sunahs that are rarely practiced in society (sunan mahjūrah), as well as strengthening a culture of worship that is based on propositions, complete understanding and contextualization in the modern Muslim community.
