Abstract

This study aims to formulate strategies for developing Islamic Boarding School-based educational institutions in order to improve quality and competitiveness. The analysis was conducted by identifying internal and external factors at MA Unggulan Darul Ulum STEP-2 IDB Jombang. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using an interactive analysis model that included data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the internal factor analysis showed strengths in the form of good student characteristics, professional teachers and educational staff, adequate facilities and infrastructure, a Islamic Boarding School-based environment, and sufficient financial support. Meanwhile, several aspects were also weaknesses that needed to be improved. On the external side, opportunities were found in the form of extensive partnerships, public trust, and strategic location access, in addition to challenges in the form of competition between educational institutions. Based on this analysis, several development strategies were formulated, namely: curriculum development strategy; human resource development strategy; active, creative, innovative, and enjoyable learning strategy; facilities and infrastructure development strategy; student development strategy; strategy for strengthening the culture and environment of Islamic boarding schools; and strategy for strengthening management. This study confirms that the formulation of boarding school-based strategies can encourage improvements in the quality and competitiveness of Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

This study examines gender-based differences in poverty coping strategies among rural farming households in Akoko South Local Government Area, Ondo State, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 120 respondents, comprising equal numbers of male- and female-headed households from six randomly chosen communities. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Foster–Greer–Thorbecke (FGT) poverty index, and logistic regression models. Findings reveal significant gender disparities in household characteristics, economic activities, and poverty levels. The average age of female-headed households was 44.7 years, compared to 53.4 years for male-headed households. Educational attainment was relatively high, with 56.7% of female and 46.6% of male household heads having tertiary education. Male-headed households recorded higher average incomes (₦56,664,100) and a lower poverty incidence (30%) than female-headed households (53.4%). The FGT index further indicated a greater poverty depth among female-headed households (0.534). Livelihood activities differed, with 70% of male-headed households engaged in farm labour and an equal proportion of female-headed households involved in the sale of agricultural products. Logistic regression identified marital status, income level, and participation in crop processing as significant determinants of poverty status. Reducing the number of daily meals was the most common coping strategy. The study highlights the need for gender-responsive rural development policies that promote equitable access to credit, productive resources, and training. Targeted empowerment programmes for female-headed households can strengthen resilience and support sustainable poverty reduction in rural communities.

Abstract

Urban planning and inclusive development have become important issues to the fast urbanization and socioeconomic change of Tanzania. The politics of city governance, the spatial planning and fair allocation of services has remained to impact on the way cities develop and operate. The paper provides an analysis of the impact of the governance structure, politicking interests, and policy implementation on the outcomes of urban development in major cities in Tanzania, namely, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Arusha, and Mwanza. It relies on theories of institutional and governance and examines their overlapping to ensure inclusiveness or not through decentralization, political accountability, and participatory planning frameworks. Based on evidence through government reports, academic research and reviews of urban policies, the paper indicates that gaps between policy design and policy implementation occur continuously with political interference, institutional failures and low citizen participation. Although there are progressive policies of urban development like the National Urban Development Policy (2012) and the Tanzania Development Vision 2025, they have not been implemented due to the lack of proper resources and effective coordination between the central and local governments. The paper concludes that to attain inclusive urban development in Tanzania, the government should strengthen transparency in governance, increase the autonomy of local governments and promote the multi-stakeholder participation in the urban planning processes.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores how rural girls in Jamalpur District, Bangladesh, negotiate their pursuit of higher education within the intersecting forces of patriarchal norms, cultural expectations, and socioeconomic limitations. Drawing on Feminist Phenomenology and Bourdieu’s theory of habitus and cultural capital, the study examines twenty in-depth interviews to illuminate the lived meanings of aspiration, agency, and constraint. Using Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis, five major themes emerged: conditional negotiation for family approval, balancing respectability with ambition, persistence amid economic hardship, emotional ambivalence, and education as empowerment. The findings reveal that girls’ educational journeys are shaped by moral expectations and relational negotiations rather than overt defiance. Their agency is expressed through strategic conformity, emotional endurance, and subtle acts of adaptation. Education, therefore, operates as both a site of constraint and transformation, allowing rural girls to reimagine womanhood within socially accepted boundaries. The study contributes to feminist educational discourse by foregrounding the emotional, cultural, and structural dimensions of gendered access to higher education. It calls for gender-transformative policies that address not only material barriers but also the cultural logics that define respectability and feminine virtue in rural Bangladesh.

Abstract

Word card media plays an important role in helping early childhood recognize letter and word symbols gradually. In the early stages, children can learn to recognize the shape of the letters through the cards, and then associate them with the appropriate sounds. In this way, the word card becomes a bridge between the child's speaking ability and the ability to read at the beginning. This study aims to determine the influence of word card use on early childhood cognitive development and analyze the factors that affect the relationship between cognitive development and word card use in early childhood. This research method uses a quantitative approach with an experimental method. The data collection technique in this study was carried out through tests and observations. The data analysis technique in this study uses the latest version of SPSS statistical software to analyze the relationship between cognitive variables and the use of word card media in early childhood. The implementation of word card media by teachers has been running effectively and systematically. There was a positive and significant influence between the use of word card media on children's cognitive abilities, which was shown by a strong correlation coefficient.

Abstract

Picture storybooks not only attract children's attention with colorful illustrations, but can also improve language skills, especially in terms of literacy. By listening to stories and looking at pictures, children can recognize new words, understand the context in which they are used, and enrich their understanding of the world around them. This study aims to find  out the description of the use of picture storybooks in early childhood, find out the description of literacy skills, and find out the influence of the use of picture storybooks on early childhood literacy skills. This study uses a quantitative approach to determine the effect of the use of picture storybooks on literacy in early childhood. The research design used is Pre Experimental in the form of One Group Pretest-Posstest Design. The data analysis technique used in this study is descriptive statistical analysis, Inferential Statistical Test (Wicoxon Signed rank test). The results of the study showed that the results of the N-Gain analysis, the literacy ability of early childhood after using picture storybooks increased in the medium category, showing moderate development and only 2 children were in the low category. These findings suggest that the use of picture storybooks is effective in improving literacy skills, although the increase has not yet reached the high category. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of picture storybooks has a positive and significant effect on improving early childhood literacy skills. The research is expected to be a reference and open up new study space related to the use of learning media in improving children's abilities. Findings on improving abilities obtained after treatment show that the selection and modification of appropriate learning media has the potential to have a positive impact on children's development.

Abstract

The social welfare expansions have emerged as the major axis of the global south agendas to poverty reduction and gender equality. Regardless of the progressive policy promises, the translation of these intentions into fair access is not even theorized. Current literature seems to focus more on policy design and coverage indicators, creating a significant gap in the literature regarding the role of gender and its influence on access in the day-to-day implementation of access, especially in comparative settings. This study fills this gap by examining the gendered access to social welfare services in Zanzibar and Indonesia. It seeks to examine mediating roles of policy promises to inclusion and the functioning of gender through policy processes. The research design is a qualitative comparative design methodology that involves secondary data, such as policy documents, administrative reports, and existing empirical studies. The discussion will be driven by a unified model that involves Feminist Social Policy Theory and Street-Level Bureaucracy. The findings from a qualitative analysis of policy texts, program reports, and existing empirical studies indicate that the inclusion of women is habitually mediated by care burdens, documentation inequalities, and frontline interpretations of deservingness. Consequently, policy promises tend to deliver differentiated and delayed results. It is by foregrounding such mechanisms that the study contributes to current discourses on welfare governance at the international level and emphasizes the necessity of revising implementation practices and legislative ambition.

Abstract

This study explores the factors influencing the degree of staffing autonomy in Vietnamese public universities from the perspectives of civil servants (including academic staff, administrative professionals, and university managers). A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted with 286 respondents from 12 public universities across Northern, Central, and Southern Vietnam. The questionnaire used a five-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 through Cronbach’s Alpha reliability testing, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Pearson correlation, and Multiple Linear Regression (MLR). The EFA identified five factors affecting staffing autonomy: (1) Financial Self-Sufficiency (FSS), (2) Institutional Legal Framework (ILF), (3) Internal Governance Capacity (IGC), (4) University Council Effectiveness (UCE), and (5) Organizational Culture of Change (OCC). The regression model explained 62.4% of the variance (Adjusted R² = 0.624). Financial Self-Sufficiency emerged as the strongest predictor (β = 0.312), followed by Institutional Legal Framework (β = 0.258), Internal Governance Capacity (β = 0.214), University Council Effectiveness (β = 0.176), and Organizational Culture of Change (β = 0.134). An independent samples t-test revealed significant differences in perceived staffing autonomy between financially self-sufficient and partially state-funded universities. This is among the first large-scale, multi-institutional quantitative studies on staffing autonomy in Vietnamese higher education that surveys civil servants across occupational categories. The findings provide empirical evidence for policymakers and university administrators to prioritize financial self-sufficiency and legal reform as preconditions for effective human resource autonomy.
