Abstract

Indonesia is rich in natural resources, culture, and diversity in its social activities. This makes tourism a sector with potential as an economic booster. Central Java Province, in particular, is one of the provinces with a diverse and numerous array of tourist destinations. This diversity attracts both local and international tourists. Therefore, this research was conducted to determine the extent of the impact of the tourism sector on the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). The analysis method used is multiple linear regression with a 25-year time series data covering the number of tourist attractions, number of tourists, number of hotel accommodations, number of restaurants and eateries, and tourism sector investments as independent variables, and GRDP as the dependent variable. The results show that the number of tourist attractions and tourists has a positive and significant impact, while the number of hotel accommodations, restaurants, and eateries has a positive but not significant impact. Additionally, investment in the tourism sector has a negative and significant impact.

Abstract

Sebedang Lake is one of the mainstay natural tourist attractions of West Kalimantan Province, located between Sempalai Sebedang Village and Sepuk Tanjung Village, Sebawi District, Sambas Regency. When the Covid-19 pandemic caused world tourism activity to decline, Lake Sebedang continued operating with high tourist numbers. This research analyzed the quadruple helix collaboration on the development of Lake Sebedang ecotourism during the Covid-19 pandemic from a political ecotourism perspective. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative, with data sourced from interviews and literature studies. The research results found that the success of Lake Sebedang in maintaining optimal tourism activities during the Covid-19 pandemic could not be separated from the quadruple helix collaboration, namely government, academicians, business, and community. Through this collaboration, a Covid-19 volunteer post and guard team are available, health protocols are implemented by checking temperatures, as well as providing hand washing equipment at the entrance to Sebedang Lake, and visitors are required to wear masks, including at cafes in the Sebedang Lake area by the Circular Letter of the Indonesian Minister of Trade Number 12 of 2020 concerning Restoration of Activities Carried Out During the Covid-19 and New Normal Period.

Abstract

This research examines the challenges and opportunities of incorporating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into Dhakil-level Madrasa teaching in Bangladesh. Despite the government's attempts to modernize education, ICT adoption in Madrasas remains much lower than in mainstream schools, with just 25% incorporating ICT into their curricula, compared to more than 70% in secondary schools. The study takes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to evaluate the present level of ICT infrastructure, teacher readiness, and cultural attitudes toward ICT integration in Madrasas. The findings show that poor infrastructure, particularly in rural regions, and a lack of educated instructors are essential hurdles to effective ICT adoption. Cultural and ideological resistance within the Madrasa community hinders efforts to integrate new technology, with some stakeholders concerned that ICT may undermine traditional Islamic instruction. However, the report also highlights significant opportunities for ICT integration, such as government measures to improve teacher training and revise curriculum to incorporate ICT components. The study indicates that, while there are significant problems, ICT can potentially improve religious and secular education. To ensure effective ICT integration, focused expenditures in infrastructure, teacher training, and culturally relevant curriculum creation are required. These efforts can help bridge the digital gap and provide Madrasa students with the skills they need to succeed in today's technology-driven environment.

Abstract

Nigeria became administratively divided into many constituent groups, including 774 Local Governments, multiple Local Council Development Areas, 36 states, and a Federal Capital Territory. These were intended to accelerate advancement by reacting to citizen needs, pushing governance nearer to the citizens and citizens nearer to the government to more effectively meet their demands and improve the nation's overall growth. Despite the nation's institutional decentralization, with abundant human and environmental assets readily accessible to growth, the country has significant economic hurdles. This study investigates the relationship between administrative decentralization and development in Nigeria. The study gathered data from secondary sources and researchers' observations of Nigerian government operations. The study indicated that administrative decentralization of functions reduced levels of governance without equivalent funds to carry such jobs and low tax-raising capacities by subunits of government. Some of the explanations for ineffective administrative decentralization in Nigeria include the central government's lack of political will to devolve power to subunits of government properly, the issue of resource control, corruption among decentralized area officials, conflict over the location of administrative headquarters, and failure to integrate diverse groups of decentralized areas. The study concludes that administrative decentralization has not resulted in the desired progress for Nigeria. Therefore, for administrative decentralization to promote development in Nigeria, genuine human engagement must address all of the stated difficulties.

Abstract

This study explores the significance of language in creating cultural identity through an analysis of the recently-published Filipino classic Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral (2018), which shows General Gregorio del Pilar's actions during the Philippine-American War. In postcolonial contexts, language is a powerful tool for voicing dissent, negotiating power, and regaining cultural identities. The film's portrayal of language reflects the past battles of the Filipino people and serves as a symbol of resistance to colonial rule and national identity. Using Erving Goffman's book The Showing of Self in Everyday Life as a guide, this study explores communications as a performative strategy employed by characters to validate their sense of self in the socio-historical context of the Philippine Revolution. The study examines how Goyo's switch between Spanish and Filipino emphasizes resistance. This is self-determination, and cultural assertion throughout the war by fusing postcolonial theory, Bourdieu's idea of linguistic as a representation of power, and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). This study also highlights how language serves as a means of cultural resistance in Filipino cinema, as linguistic decisions influence identity and pride in the country. By focusing on the relationship between language and individual identity in Goyo, the study enhances the role of language in resisting colonial structures. Although earlier research has addressed linguistic changes in historical films, much is known about how these choices impact Filipino audiences today including their perceptions of their nation. Through new perspectives on language as well as perspectives about how language in Goyo impacts contemporary views of Filipino identity on resistance to culture, this study aims to bridge this divide.

Abstract

Stagnation in agriculture is the principal explanation for poor economic performance in many developing economies of the world, and rising agricultural productivity is the core reason for successful industrialization. The study analyzed the contribution of agricultural subsector to the economic development of Nigeria. Secondary data were sourced from various issues of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) annual reports and statement of account, Statistical Bulletin between 1981 – 2020. The study employed a unit root test for stationarity, cointegration test of long-run relationship to avoid spurious regression, Ordinary Least Square to investigate the impact of all the independent variables (Agricultural subsectors) on the dependent variable (GDP). The Granger causality test was used to test the causal relationship between the time series data. The null hypothesis for the unit root and cointegration were rejected. The result of the regression analysis showed a good fit with high R2, and some of the variables were significant. Some of the variables have unidirectional causality between each other, but there is no causal relationship between some of them. The study recommends that forest resources should be better harnessed to contribute more to the nation's gross domestic product. Also, the use of improved livestock breeds should be encouraged to improve their output further.

Abstract

This study reassessed the role of journalists and media dynamics in promoting sustainable development in Africa, specifically examining how media ownership structures, profit-driven models, and government policies impact journalistic objectivity and coverage of development issues. The research employs a descriptive survey design with a population comprising journalists and media practitioners and a sample size of 30 respondents from the region. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire, with mean and standard deviation used to analyse responses. Findings showed that media ownership often influences editorial content, with ownership structures limiting journalists' independence in covering sustainable development objectively. Additionally, profit-driven models significantly affect the quality and focus of development reporting, as the pursuit of revenue frequently prioritises entertainment over critical sustainable development topics. Government policies and censorship further restrict media freedom, impeding the balanced and thorough reporting of politically sensitive development issues. Based on these insights, the conclusion reached was that structural reforms and policy interventions are necessary to enhance the media's role in sustainable development advocacy. Recommendations include promoting editorial independence, diversifying funding sources to reduce reliance on commercial revenue and implementing policies to protect press freedom and enable objective reporting on development issues across Africa.

Abstract

Madrasah education has played a crucial role in the educational landscape of Mindanao, Philippines, particularly for Muslim communities. Traditional Madaris provide religious instruction and support for Muslim students' cultural identity. The government has been supporting the integration of Madrasah into the mainstream through different legislations, policies, peace agreements and educational reforms. Yet, challenges still exist in providing and satisfying the academic needs of Muslim learners, especially in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao. This study explored the social and political factors shaping the Madrasah educational System in the communities surrounding the Ligawasan Marsh within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. It offered recommendations to transform the Madrasah educational system. Findings revealed that social dimensions in shaping the implementation of the Traditional Madrasah include the selective implementation of the Refined Standard Madrasah Curriculum, increasing need for a balanced education, gender disparity in Madrasah attendance, decreasing trend in the learning outcomes, multilingual instruction and the unpredictable vulnerability of these Madaris to extreme and violent ideologies. On the other hand, political dimensions consist of increasing efforts in reforming Madrasah Education, changing political leadership and landscape, absence of a standardised practice for Madrasah teachers and introducing new administrative procedures and regulations. This paper recommends a comprehensive curriculum to include peace concepts, continuing education for teachers, strategic & complementary partnerships among stakeholders of Madrasah education, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms for the learning outcomes and policy support, advocacy & communication. This is to ensure inclusive and culturally responsive policies for a sustainable future of the Muslim children in Ligawasan and areas where there are Bangsamoro learners.
