Abstract

This research discussed signs in terms of icons, indexes, and symbols on the variety show named NCT Life: Hot and Young Seoul Trip using the semiotic theory of Charles Sanders Peirce. The purpose of this research is to describe icons, indexes, and symbols related to tourism and interpret these signs with contextual meaning. The reason for doing this research is to look for signs that refer to persuasive tourism promotion activities contained in the variety show. This research employed the descriptive qualitative design with the findings on each icon, index, symbol, and contextual meaning presented in the form of a description. The results of this study indicate that there are categories of icons, indexes, and symbols related to tourism promotion in Seoul, South Korea. Icon has three categories related to brand ambassadors, tourist attractions, and tourist activities. The index has four categories related to the background illustration for NCT members introduction, expressions of feelings, figurative expressions, and gestures. The symbol has three categories related to logos, slogans, and additional information related to activities and tourist attractions. Then, the contextual meaning of the signs found leads to several contexts, all of which also refer to tourism promotion activities delivered through the media of variety shows. On this basis, the research suggests that there is tourism promotion packaged in events through variety shows carried out by NCT members as performers by visiting or trying various tourist activities around Seoul and recommending them to the audience.

Abstract

Various challenges arose since the learning process in universities was carried out online due to the COVID-19 pandemic that hit the whole world. In order to have speaking and writing skills which are included as productive skills in language, students should do a lot of activities in the classroom directly by interacting a lot with both lecturers and other students. Korean Speaking and Writing course which must be carried out online without much time for preparation beforehand causes lecturers and students to experience difficulties at the beginning of online lectures. Therefore, this research was conducted to find out how Korean Speaking and Writing learning is carried out online, how students' perspectives on online learning take place, and what challenges students face when studying Korean Speaking and Writing online. This research is a qualitative descriptive study conducted at the Korean Language Education Study Program, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, focusing on second-year students. Through this research, it can be seen that: 1) Lecturers are quite good at teaching online by holding classes asynchronously using Google Classroom and synchronously with the Zoom application; 2) Students are of the view that online learning has its own advantages and disadvantages; 3) The challenges that arise from online Korean Speaking and Writing learning are the lack of self-motivation to study independently, external challenges in the form of a bad internet network, and difficulties in producing texts that are in accordance with Korean language rules.

Abstract

This research discusses the attitude of President Moon Jae-In in THAAD placement. THAAD is a defense system against short and medium-range missiles. In February 2016, South Korea and the United States reached an agreement on the plan to deploy Terminal High Altitude Area Defense or THAAD in South Korea. In the process of reaching this agreement, South Korea faces complex considerations that are both internal (increasing national security) and external (possible resistance from China and Russia). Moreover, in the middle of the process of implementing THAAD placement, there was a change of government from Park Geun-Hee to Moon Jae-In. China used several official and unofficial media to pressure South Korea during Park Geun-Hee's reign. This problem continued until the government changed to Moon Jae-In, but in the end the THAAD problem was resolved. This background leads to the research question: what factors are contributing behind Moon Jae-In's attitude regarding THAAD placement? By applying the descriptive-analysis method with data sources in the form of online media, this study aimed to explain the background that drove Moon Jae-In to resolve conflicts related to THAAD placement. The results of the analysis showed that there were political, economic, and social factors that drived changes related to the conflict over the placement of THAAD during the reign of Moon Jae-In.

Abstract

Overseas students will have difficulty adjusting to the norms and habits in the new environment. This impacts discomfort and unhappiness in adapting. This condition is termed culture shock. This study aims to determine the culture shock experienced by South Korean students and the difficulties in Indonesia and the United States. The data is collected by using a literature study with qualitative method. The result of this study shows that South Korean students in Indonesia and the United States experience culture shock and difficulties due to different cultures and languages with a percentage of 60-80%. The differences that arise between Korean students in Indonesia and the United States are the difficulties caused by transportation and services from students in Indonesia because they feel that transportation and services in Indonesia are still lacking and personal difficulties in the United States because of the individualism that makes most students in the US feel lonely and find it difficult to express. However, despite experiencing culture shock, this Korean student tried to adjust to the new culture with several efforts, such as doing private lessons with Indonesians, then hanging out and communicating with Indonesians, and trying to compromise with the culture and social rules around him so that he well received and as it is. Meanwhile, adaptation efforts in the United States include conducting orientation sessions and meetings with advisors and making teams when studying with students in various countries to help break down the natural tendency to get along with students from their nation.

Therefore, This paper reports on a description of the use of metaphorical expressions and their meaning in crime news of South Korea’s online news website. A qualitative approach was employed. The data were taken from online crime news articles published by a Korean online news website DongA.com in March to November. The website discussed about a scandal in a club in Gangnam ‘Burning Sun’ which involved sexual assault, prostitution, police alliance, drugs distribution, and tax evasion in 2019. Documentation method was used to collect the data. The sentences containing metaphorical expressions were analyzed further. The results showed that three types of metaphorical expressions were found in the news articles: structural metaphor, orientational metaphor, ontological metaphor. The contextual meaning from the metaphorical expressions was also found. Hence, the purpose of using metaphors in the online crime news can produce an intense impression for the readers without any exaggerated information.

Abstract

Without even realizing it, language is a common tool we employ in social interactions to interact and communicate. This suggests that humans communicate with one another through language. This research aims to find a compliment response to the drama "Twenty-One Twenty-Five. In this drama, "Twenty-Five Twenty-One," found that there is a compliment response between the characters. Based on Herbert's compliment, responses are divided into 12 forms Appreciation Token, Comment acceptance, Praise Upgrade, Comment history, Reassignment, Return, Scale Down, Question, Disagreement, Qualification, No Acknowledgement, and Request Interpretation. This research used Herbert's compliment responses theory to identify compliment responses from dialogue characters in the drama “Twenty-Five Twenty-One”. This research uses data from dialogue characters in the drama "Twenty-One Twenty-Five” and qualitative method. Next, Simak and Padan's methods were used to identify compliment responses. After collecting compliment response data from the characters’ dialogue, compliment responses are analyzed by implementing a descriptive way. After analyzing compliment response data, the results found that of the 12 praise responses put forward by Herbert, there were 9 compliment responses in the drama. These are Appreciation token, Comment Acceptance, Praise Upgrade, Comment History, Return, Scale Down, Question, Disagreement, and also No Acknowledgement. Korean people tend to respond to compliments not only by saying "감사합니다 (gamsahamnida)" or "고마워 (gomawo)", but also use another expression to respond to some compliments, such as a smile or the person is accepting the compliment, but adding some comment.

Abstract

After the Korean War ended in 1953, Western culture rooted in the United States dominated South Korean society. This study analyses the influence of Confucianism norms on the miniskirt policy in South Korea in 1973. The Miniskirt policy is one of the policies contained in the Minor Offences Act or Gyeongbeomjoecheobeolbeop which was passed in 1973. In this law, one of the violations is overexposure, which refers to women wearing miniskirts. At that time, the police usually carried a ruler on patrol and often stopped women who wore skirts to measure the length. If the skirt worn has a hemline of 17 cm above the knee, the woman will be penalized. This policy was made because the view of the miniskirt does not fit the norms and traditions of the Korean women clothing, which creates controversy. Therefore, the research question in this study is how Confucianism norms justify the miniskirt policy for Korean women. This study uses a descriptive analysis method with the help of literature study. This study aims to explain Confucianism norms as the influence of the establishment of the South Korean miniskirt policy in 1973. The results show that the establishment of the miniskirt policy in 1973 was triggered by Confucianism norms, especially dress etiquette for Korean women which were regulated by Confucian officials. This norm was re-emphasized during the Park Chung-hee era through this policy, where Confucianism was a value that was applied to his government to strengthen the identity of the Korean nation.

The purpose of personification was to make the advertising slogan much more live and more beautiful so that it can be easier to remember. Moreover, the results revealed that there were 25 connotative meanings and 25 denotative meanings in the Korean tourism advertising slogans. Denotative meaning could convince consumers with the actual facts. Connotative could attract the consumers’ attention with eloquent words without reducing the value of the products offered.

Abstract

Yanggongju, the sexual workers for G.I. soldiers who were stationed in Korea particularly during and after Korean war, were stigmatized as 'bad women' for having sexual relationships out of marriage with foreign men. These women must endure hardships that came from the clients or the pimps in daily basis. This study aims to investigate how the life and polemics yanggongju had experienced in the period of 1950-1955. The early generations of yanggongju consisted of women with various backgrounds, such as war widows and women who became the breadwinner of the family. This study used qualitative method and the data were collected from the articles of Kyunghyang Shinmun, Dong-a Ilbo, and Chosun Ilbo in the period of January 1, 1950, to December 31, 1555, accessed from a news archive site called naver news library.  After two-times process of data reduction, 47 articles were collected under the category of nyu-seu (news). It was found that the early generation of yanggongju experienced at least four kinds of polemics in their life: (1) life difficulties (physically and mentally), such as fallen women stigma, vulnerable to sexual transmitting disease, and having many debts, (2) child neglect in the form of attempted abortion and child abandonment, (3) suicide and abused, and (4) alcohol and drug (opium) addiction. It is hoped that this research can contribute to further researches on the problem of yanggongju and their position as a marginalized people.
