Abstract

This research aimed to analyze slang words translation techniques in the dialogue of series Narcos Season 3 subtitled by professional (Netflix). This research used a qualitative research method by applying a case study design. This research used document analysis (subtitle). The data were analyzed by using the theory from Molina and Albir (2002). The result showed that there were 132 data taken from the series. Based on findings, there were 9 types of translation techniques used, namely, Established Equivalence, Borrowing, Particularization, Reduction, Linguistic Compression, Generalization, Description, Modulation, Calque. The result showed that 132 data slang words were identified. 90 slangs in word form, 33 slangs in phrase form, and 9 slangs in clause form. The researcher found the translator use more than one translation technique in translating the utterances. In this research, the researcher grouped the data into single, duplet, and triplet. Based on the findings, the researcher noted there were 110 (83,33%) that were classified as single translation techniques (using only one translation technique), 19 (14,39%) that were classified as duplet translation techniques (using two translation techniques), and 3 (2,27%) which were classified as triplet translation techniques (using three translation techniques).

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the role of google translation in comprehending English text for 5th semester students of the English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja. In this study used qualitative methods in the form of interviews. To analyze the data, researcher used the theory of Miles and Hubberman. The source of data in this study is 5th semester students majoring in English. UKI Toraja consists of ten students as research reapondents. Through the results of the study, researcher found the role of Google Translate in comprehending English text, namely the speed and ease of translating Google Translate is able to provide an initial picture for a text, although it is limited in translating cultures, norms and social contexts.Based on the results above, the researcher concluded that Google Translate plays a role and is significance in comprehending English texts. Its role and significance include providing ease in translation process, providing quickly translation, allowing students to quickly get an overview of the text they are reading, time efficiency, facilitating cross-cultural communication

Abstract

The aims of this research are to describe the students participation improvement and vocabulary mastery in learning activities through the implementation of drilling technique. This research was carried out due to the students having low motivation in learning. Besides, they got trouble mastering and memorizing the vocabulary so that they had the poor vocabulary. The researchers applied Classroom Action Research; the data of this research was analysed in both qualitative and quantitative methods. The researchers used observation, measurement, interviews and documentation technique to collect the data. The instruments are observation checklist, field notes, tests and interview guidelines. The findings showed that there is an improvement students vocabulary mastery and participation in learning activities. In cycle I, the average score of students' vocabulary mastery was 48% and in cycle II it was 77%. The students participation in learning activities was also improved, in cycle I was 68% while in cycle II was 79%. It can be inferred that drilling technique can improve the students students participation and vocabulary mastery in learning activities at seventh-grade in SMPN 03 Sokan.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of translation errors in YouTube videos focusing on basic English conversation for children in learning. The research method employed a qualitative approach to analyze translation errors in English conversation practice videos on the LucyMax English channel. By utilizing translation theory, language learning theory, and communication theory, the study aimed to identify and categorize translation errors and their concrete impact on children's second language learning. Data collection involved video transcriptions and translation evaluations to identify possible errors, with qualitative data analysis conducted to develop recommendations for improving the quality of translation in educational videos. The results of the study provide insights into the importance of accurate translations in educational content on YouTube to enhance children's language learning. The findings emphasize the need for content creators to ensure accurate translations align with the learning objectives of second language acquisition for children. This research contributes to the understanding of the impact of translation errors on children's language learning through YouTube videos, highlighting the significance of providing accurate and supportive educational content for effective language acquisition.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed many challenges to education delivery, especially in rural areas. This study aims to analyze the perceptions and experiences of students in rural areas using TikTok and YouTube as learning media during and after the pandemic. This research uses mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative). The results show that students in rural areas face internet access constraints and low learning motivation. However, they are interested in using TikTok and YouTube, which are considered interactive and easily accessible materials. This study concludes that both digital platforms can potentially overcome the academic backwardness of students in post-pandemic rural areas. Specifically, quantitative data collected through closed questionnaires revealed that most students in rural areas rely on unstable mobile internet and devices, resulting in poor connectivity. The qualitative, open-ended questionnaire highlighted decreased motivation and increased stress among about half of the respondents. Despite the decrease in motivation, the students remained enthusiastic about using TikTok and YouTube for self-directed learning. They found the platforms engaging, flexible, and enabled discussion with peers. This study suggests that increasing the interactive capacity of these digital tools could promote effective online education for underserved groups, reducing the pandemic gap.
