Abstract

According to PISA data, Indonesian students' literacy and numeracy skills rank 73rd and 74th out of 79 countries, respectively. This indicates a low level of literacy and numeracy among students in Indonesia. Therefore, innovative approaches in education are needed to enhance these skills. One such approach is fostering a school culture of literacy and numeracy, as implemented at one of the senior high schools in Pandeglang. This study aims to analyze the literacy and numeracy skills of Pandeglang 10th High School students. The research employs an ex post facto method with a descriptive approach. Data collection was conducted through literacy and numeracy tests administered to 10th-grade students. The analysis reveals that students' literacy skills are relatively good, while their numeracy skills tend to be low. Nevertheless, there has been a significant improvement in both aspects, with steady monthly progress in literacy and numeracy skills. Thus, sustaining literacy and numeracy activities as a school culture is crucial to achieving better outcomes.

Abstract

Montessori is an activity-oriented, self-directed, age-appropriate, fun, and hands-on learning method. It is an educational approach in which children make creative choices in their learning, discover things for themselves, and are productive workers. At the same time, the classroom teachers offer appropriate guides to the children in the learning process as facilitators of learning. This educational method facilitates children's creative abilities and self-expression, making learning permanent. This is because Maria Montessori believed that education should prepare children for all-around development (physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially) by allowing them to engage in age-appropriate activities and skills and passionately explore the rich learning environment independently based on their background and mental abilities. These will help them satisfy their developmental and learning needs, thereby promoting their natural growth and learning.

This study used a descriptive qualitative method to describe the SIKARYA program implemented at senior high school in depth. The results of this study obtained various information about the profile of the SIKARYA program. The SIKARYA program begins with socialization activities on Friday. Literacy activities: After socialization, students will be given material about the literary works they create. The implementation of the SIKARYA program this year is only focused on making poetry and short stories. The existence of this SIKARYA program motivates students to create literary works and fosters enthusiasm and new experiences. However, many students need more interest in making this literary work. Therefore, this program should be held again, with other strategies to attract students' interest.
