Abstract

The Indonesian education system has undergone significant curricular reforms with the introduction of the 2013 Curriculum (K-13) and the Merdeka Curriculum. This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of these curricula from a pedagogical approach perspective, examining their impacts on primary, junior, and senior high school education in Indonesia. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with teachers, students, and educational policymakers across diverse regions. Results indicate that the Merdeka Curriculum is generally preferred due to its flexibility, learner autonomy, and emphasis on holistic development, which have led to improved student engagement and critical thinking skills. However, challenges such as inadequate resources and the need for better teacher training persist. The K-13, while structured, often constrained innovation and student engagement. This research contributes to the education field by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of these curricular reforms, offering insights for policymakers and educators to enhance curriculum design and implementation for better educational outcomes in Indonesia.

Based on the findings, the paper hereby recommends that teachers should pay more attention to students in safe school initiative programme so that they could overcome the negative impact of insurgency on their academic achievement. They should prioritize their learning to be able to fit in with the level of learning of other regular students. Teachers should apply some psychological principles to mitigate the effects of the insurgency on the behavioural pattern of the students so that they could still feel a sense of belonging in the classroom.

Abstract

This study examined the recruitment, selection, and compensation processes at Basic School A, identifying areas for improvement in human resource management. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the headteacher and a purposive sample of teachers. Thematic analysis revealed that the recruitment process involves completing education, national service, applying through the GES portal, and documentation before posting. Teachers preferred the previous decentralized system for greater commitment and reduced transportation costs. The compensation process includes validation by the Accountant Generals’ Department to eliminate absenteeism and “ghost” employees, though some teachers are only aware of monthly credits. Both teachers and the headteacher highlight staffing as needing improvement, suggesting that decentralizing recruitment to consider teachers’ residences would enhance job satisfaction and performance. Recommendations include decentralizing recruitment to allow district selection, establishing transparent validation guidelines, and shifting towards decentralized staffing for better resource management and improved teacher commitment.

Abstract

This study evaluates the gender gap in education in West Kalimantan through an analysis of the Human Development Index (HDI) for the 2021-2023 period. The goal is to identify the differences between men and women in the education sector in different districts/cities, as well as explore the factors that cause these inequalities. With a descriptive approach and secondary data analysis from the Central Statistics Agency, it was found that most districts/cities still experience significant gender inequality. For example, Bengkayang Regency recorded the largest gap with a difference in HDI between men and women of 12.03 points, while Sambas Regency showed a smaller gap with an increasing trend for women. This study emphasizes the importance of more inclusive policies to improve access and quality of education for women, especially in disadvantaged areas. In addition, raising awareness of the importance of gender equality in education is considered important to create sustainable change. The results of this study contribute to the development of a more equitable education policy in West Kalimantan.

Abstract

Distance Education has come to stay and it is very significant in the advancement of making education accessible to a broader popular. This distance education stems from a parent university, however, there seem to be a partial disconnection between the distance education and their parent university. The purpose of this study is there to explore the factors that account for the partial severance and the perceptions of distance education students regarding their sense of connection with the parent university. The qualitative research approach was adopted for the study. Consistent with the approach, case study design was used for the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to sample twenty-five (25) participants for the study, twelve (12) lecturers and thirteen (13) students. Interview guide was the research instrument used to collect data for the study. The thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The study revealed that inadequate integration and communication between distance education students and the main campus significantly contribute to their sense of disconnection. Moreso, Distance Education students perceive their connection with the parent university as weak and insufficient due to feelings of isolation and exclusion from campus activities. They face significant communication gaps and lack access to resources and support services equivalent to those available to on-campus students. Based on the key findings, it is recommended that, parent universities who have established distance education should launch regular channels of communication to keep distance learners informed about campus events, resources, and opportunities for engagement. Also, parent universities must prioritize equitable access to resources and support services for distance education students. By creating a more inclusive and supportive environment, there will be a strong connection between parent universities and distance education, ultimately enriching their academic journey and overall satisfaction.
