Abstract

The Indonesia-Philippines border region is a unique region due to the ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity that coexists. Islam plays a significant role as a collective identity that unites Muslim communities on both sides of the border, as well as being the foundation of values in social, cultural, and economic life. This study aims to explore the dynamics of Muslim community life in the border region, focusing on social, cultural, educational, and political aspects, and how Islam functions as a social glue and symbol of collective identity. Through a qualitative descriptive approach, this study reveals that Islam is not only a spiritual guide but also a foundation of solidarity that strengthens cross-border relations. Religious traditions such as the Prophet's Birthday and joint prayers, as well as the acculturation of Islamic values with local culture, create a unique social harmony. However, the community in this region also faces challenges, including the influence of modernization, social conflict, and marginalization of development. The results of the study show that Islamic identity in the border region is not only able to strengthen social cohesion, but also helps the community face the challenges of globalization without losing local traditions. In conclusion, Islam as a collective identity plays a strategic role in creating harmony and stability in the Indonesia-Philippines border region, although it requires more attention from various parties to maintain its sustainability.

Abstract

The Mappalili tradition is a unique tradition of the Bugis tribe which is still often found in society, one of which is in the district. Pinrang, South Sulawesi. This tradition is an activity of praying before entering the rice planting period which is usually carried out by people who work as farmers, with the hope that the harvest will be abundant and agricultural activities will avoid bad things. This activity is identified as a form of ritual that combines cultural and religious values. When people were still trapped under the influence of spiritual power, this ritual usually offered offerings, but since the arrival of Islam, everything has merged into a prayer ritual that is full of Islamic values. This article tries to redescribe the practices of the Mappalili tradition and examine the beginnings of this tradition developing in the district community. Pinrang utilizes previously existing writings using library research, which is then analyzed using Bourdieu's theory of practice. The results of the literature analysis show that the Mappalili tradition is carried out in three main processes, namely: tudang sipulung, Mabukka tana, Manre Sipulung, the Mappalili procession describes the sacred value of Durkheim who considers that this ritual is a sacred thing and can have bad consequences if it is not carried out, besides that it was found that If you look at it using Bourdieu's analysis, this tradition is a complementary strategy to other physical efforts that have been carried out by farmers, meaning that there is an approach to the Almighty Creator to get good results in increasing capital with material value.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the authority conflict between religion and tradition in the Ararem tradition in Biak society.Religion and tradition, as two influential normative systems, often complement each other, but in this case, a clash arises when tradition, through the Ararem tradition, dominates marriage, while the church advocates for holy matrimony. The large dowry requirement in the Ararem tradition hinders holy matrimony, causing tension between the two authorities.Using a qualitative approach and religious sociology study through the theory of authority conflict, this research reveals the dynamics of the relationship between religion and tradition and its impact on the social life of the Biak community. The study uses interviews, observations, and documentation to gather data, which is then analyzed to provide a deeperunderstanding of the imbalance between religion and tradition in marriage practices. The research was conducted in Biak Numfor, Papua.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the relationship between gender and culture through an anthropological approach, with a primary focus on literature analysis. This study utilizes a variety of literature sources, including key theories such as gender performativity, intersectionality, and gender representation in cultural rituals. With a literature approach, this study critically reviews academic works from various disciplines, including anthropology, gender studies, and sociology, to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework. The results of the study show that gender construction cannot be separated from the cultural context that surrounds it. Cultural rituals play an important role in both reinforcing and challenging existing gender norms. In addition, the analysis shows that there is diversity in the concept of gender across cultures, such as the existence of non-binary gender categories in certain indigenous communities. This study also reveals that globalization and social dynamics contribute to the transformation of gender norms in modern society.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the economic system of fishing families in Bulutui Village, North Minahasa, emphasizing patterns of dependence on the sea and weather, work and profit-sharing systems, and the role of women in household economic activities. Bulutui Village was chosen as the research location because it represents a coastal community that still maintains a traditional economic structure based on social solidarity and local cultural values. This study used a qualitative approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation with five key informants: fishermen, fish traders, catch collectors, and fishermen's wives. Data analysis was conducted thematically through the stages of domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme identification. The results indicate that the economic system of fishing families in Bulutui is flexible and adaptive, heavily influenced by weather conditions and the fishing season. The profit-sharing system in fishing activities demonstrates a collective work structure based on trust and the contribution of roles, such as divers (mudung) and work groups (soma). Women play a central role in catch management, fish distribution, and micro-enterprises such as food cultivation and sales. The economic strategies developed by fishing families are not only survival-oriented but also demonstrate social resilience through cooperative networks and a community-based moral economy. These findings underscore the importance of recognizing local economic systems as part of inclusive and sustainable coastal development.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of fishing gear usage within the fishing community of Bulutui Village, North Sulawesi, as part of a complex socio-ecological system. In this context, fishing tools such as soma (nets), menjubi (underwater spearfishing), compressors, and motorboats are not merely technical devices, but also reflect local knowledge, social solidarity, and inherited ecological adaptation strategies. Using a qualitative approach with participatory observation and in-depth interviews, this research highlights how Bulutui’s fishermen organize collective work structures in a flexible and fluid manner, grounded in trust, skills, and shared work ethics. The profit-sharing system is based on equitable contribution, governed by social norms and mutual consensus rather than formal documentation. Findings suggest that Bulutui’s fishing practices serve as a cultural resistance to exploitative economic models and provide an alternative model for sustainable fisheries management rooted in local values, social solidarity, and moral economy.

Abstract

Abstract

The rapid expansion of social media has transformed digital platforms into new public spheres that enable massive interaction and expression, while simultaneously generating serious challenges such as the proliferation of hate speech. This article aims to analyze the attitudes of students at IAIN Manado toward hate speech on Instagram and TikTok and to examine the factors influencing these attitudes. This study employs a qualitative approach with a field research design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation of social media activities, and documentation involving ten purposively selected students. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, thematic categorization, and interpretative analysis by linking empirical findings with theories of attitude, social action, and the digital public sphere. The findings reveal that students generally possess a good level of knowledge regarding hate speech, although the depth of understanding varies according to academic background. Students’ attitudes toward hate speech can be categorized into three main patterns: active rejection, adaptive caution, and permissive attitudes. These attitudes are influenced by digital literacy, religious values, local cultural norms, social media experiences, and concerns over the chilling effect. This study emphasizes that hate speech on social media should not be understood merely as individual expression, but as a structural phenomenon embedded within the dynamics of the digital public sphere shaped by algorithms and commercial logics. Therefore, addressing hate speech requires a multidimensional approach that integrates legal frameworks, digital literacy education, communication ethics, and the strengthening of religious moderation values within higher education institutions.
