Abstract

The mosque is a central religious institution in Muslim societies. However, its role is often narrowly understood as merely a place for ritual worship. This article aims to analyze the functions of the mosque from the perspective of the sociology of religion by conceptualizing it as a socio-religious institution with multidimensional roles in society. This study employs a qualitative approach through library research. Data were collected from classical and contemporary works in the sociology of religion, Islamic studies, and relevant scholarly articles, and analyzed using content analysis techniques. The theoretical framework draws on Émile Durkheim’s theory of social solidarity, Max Weber’s theory of social action, and Peter L. Berger’s theory of the social construction of reality. The findings indicate that the mosque performs several key functions: a ritual function that strengthens social solidarity and collective consciousness; a social function as a religious public space and a center of community integration; an educational function in transmitting and reproducing religious values; an economic function through the management of zakat, infaq, and almsgiving; and a cultural function as a symbol of identity and a site for negotiating religious values and local culture. This article argues that the mosque is a dynamic socio-religious actor with significant potential to contribute to the development of a religious, inclusive, and socially cohesive society. Strengthening the social functions of mosques is therefore essential to ensure their relevance in responding to contemporary social dynamics.

Abstract

This article examines the characteristics of Nusantara ulama’s fiqh through an Islamic anthropology approach combined with a reconstruction of contemporary uṣūl al-fiqh. The study addresses the academic problem of the dominance of normative-doctrinal approaches in fiqh studies that often neglect the social, cultural, and ethical dimensions of Islamic legal practices in non-Arab Muslim societies. Employing a qualitative hybrid approach, this research analyzes contemporary fiqh texts and ulama discourses using discourse analysis and normative-reflective readings of ‘urf, maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, Sufism, and collective ijtihad. The findings reveal that Nusantara fiqh functions as a dynamic socio-religious practice, produced through negotiations between Islamic norms, local customs, and the needs of a plural society. The integration of Sufism strengthens the ethical dimension of fiqh, while collective ijtihad and the recognition of ‘urf serve as the epistemological foundations that ensure social legitimacy and contextual relevance. This article contributes to the development of sociology of religion and Islamic anthropology by offering an integrative framework for understanding fiqh as a lived and socially embedded practice.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji interaksi dinamis antara lembaga keuangan formal dan informal dalam komunitas nelayan Muslim minoritas di Minahasa Utara, Indonesia. Komunitas-komunitas ini menghadapi berbagai hambatan struktural dalam mengakses layanan keuangan formal, khususnya yang sesuai dengan prinsip-prinsip syariah. Akibatnya, mereka sering bergantung pada mekanisme informal—seperti hubungan patron-klien, skema pinjaman kelompok, dan praktik utang timbal balik—yang tertanam kuat dalam budaya lokal dan dipengaruhi oleh nilai-nilai etika Islam, termasuk larangan riba, prinsip keadilan (‘adl), tolong-menolong (ta‘āwun), dan pencarian keberkahan (barakah). Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah untuk menelaah bagaimana norma-norma moral Islam dan tradisi budaya lokal berinteraksi dalam membentuk perilaku keuangan dan preferensi kelembagaan masyarakat. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif fenomenologis, penelitian ini mengandalkan wawancara mendalam, observasi partisipatif, dan studi dokumen untuk memperoleh temuan yang bersifat kontekstual. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa praktik keuangan dalam komunitas ini bukan sekadar pilihan ekonomi, melainkan cerminan dari logika moral yang kompleks dan kewajiban sosial. Tiga tipologi interaksi berhasil diidentifikasi—substitusi, pelengkap, dan hibrida—yang sejalan dengan bentuk budaya seperti sistem patronase, gotong royong, dan pengaturan keuangan kolektif. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa konvergensi antara etika Islam dan sistem budaya lokal membentuk ekologi keuangan yang khas dan kontekstual, yang secara simultan menjawab kebutuhan masyarakat serta mengisi kekosongan yang ditinggalkan oleh lembaga keuangan formal. Temuan ini menekankan pentingnya pengembangan model keuangan mikro syariah yang inklusif dan berbasis komunitas, dengan mempertimbangkan realitas budaya lokal
