Abstract

The variability of research findings regarding the effectiveness of the discovery learning model on students’ critical thinking skills indicates the need for a comprehensive synthesis to obtain a more conclusive understanding. In response to this gap, the present study employs a meta-analysis approach to calculate and compare the effect sizes reported in previous studies. The primary objective of this research is to provide an empirical overview of the effectiveness of the discovery learning model in improving critical thinking skills. This study follows a systematic procedure based on the PRISMA guidelines, starting from the identification and screening stages to the selection of studies that meet the inclusion criteria. Through this process, a total of 13 journal articles and 1 conference proceeding published between 2018 and 2023 were included. All eligible data were analyzed using the OpenMEE software to compute the effect size and statistical significance. The results of the meta-analysis show a p-value of 0.002, which is lower than the significance threshold of 0.05. This indicates that the discovery learning model has a significant impact on enhancing students’ critical thinking abilities. Furthermore, the estimated effect size of 0.889 falls within the medium-to-high category, reinforcing the conclusion that the model provides a substantial contribution to the development of critical thinking skills. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the discovery learning model is an effective instructional approach for improving critical thinking.

Abstract

Literacy and numeracy are the competencies that facilitate lifelong learning, but their development is one of the major challenges in the multilingual setting, as happens in Timor-Leste. This paper presents a critical literature review, which synthesises current research, policy reports, and educational practices to investigate the barriers and opportunities to learn literacy and numeracy in primary schools. The results indicate that systemic limitations, language barriers between home and school languages, and a lack of pedagogical materials are barriers to successful learning. Specifically, the prevalence of Portuguese as the language of instruction has been known to interfere with early childhood learning among children, and the lack of teacher training leads to the worsening of inequalities in classroom performance. However, the review identifies new strategies that can increase student engagement and performance. The new strategies include mother tongue/translingual approaches, culturally responsive teaching, multiliteracies, and the incorporation of literacy and numeracy education in both local and social contexts. The evidence shows that literacy and numeracy are interdependent and that teacher professional development is conclusive. The review concludes that long-term development demands consistent language policies, an equal distribution of resources, and education for teachers.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the learning outcomes of students at MAN Bandung Barat on the topic of Fungi through the implementation of the Direct Instruction learning model supported by PowerPoint media. The background of this research stems from the low level of students’ conceptual understanding of the material, indicating the need for a more structured and guided instructional approach. The research employed a quantitative method with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The subjects of the study were Grade X students enrolled in biology classes during the current semester. The research procedure included administering a pretest, conducting the learning intervention using the Direct Instruction model facilitated by PowerPoint, and administering a posttest to measure changes in learning outcomes. Data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics, a normality test using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov method, and the calculation of the N-Gain score to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. The results showed a significant increase in the average scores from the pretest to the posttest, indicating a positive improvement after the treatment was administered. The normality test results confirmed that the data were normally distributed (p > 0.05), allowing for appropriate subsequent analyses. The average N-Gain score fell into the moderately effective category, suggesting that the learning intervention meaningfully enhanced students’ understanding. Therefore, this study concludes that the application of the Direct Instruction model supported by PowerPoint is effective in improving students’ learning outcomes on the topic of Fungi. The findings further imply that structured instructional models combined with visual media can optimize students’ comprehension of biological concepts.

Abstract

Early Childhood Education (PAUD) serves as the primary foundation for developing children’s personality and moral character during the golden age (0–6 years). At this stage, children are highly sensitive to habits, modeling, and moral stimulation. This paper aims to examine the relevance of the Qur’anic concepts of commands (amr) and prohibitions (nahy) in Surah Luqman verses 13–19 as the basis for moral education in early childhood. The study employs a library research method by analyzing classical tafsir, relevant literature, and contemporary studies on Islamic character education. The findings reveal that these verses contain comprehensive moral principles, including the prohibition of polytheism, commands to honor parents, awareness of divine supervision, prayer, amar ma’ruf nahi munkar (enjoining good and forbidding evil), patience, and humility. These values create a balance between theological, ethical, and psychological aspects in children’s moral development. Implementation in PAUD can be achieved through habituation, exemplary behavior, daily worship, and integration of Qur’anic values into learning activities. Qur’an-based moral education prepares children to be virtuous, disciplined, and responsible individuals capable of facing modern challenges. Therefore, Surah Luqman verses 13–19 serve as a strategic guideline for nurturing Islamic character in early childhood.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis efektivitas pembelajaran langsung (Direct Instruction) berbantuan media PowerPoint (PPT) kontekstual terhadap peningkatan hasil belajar siswa pada materi suhu dan konversi suhu di kelas VII B SMP Kesatuan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatn kuantitatif dengan metode eksperimen semu dan desain one-group pretest-posttest. Subjek penelitian terdiri dari 31 siswa yang diberikan pretest dan posttest untuk mengukur peningkatan hasil belajar. Data dianalisis mengguanakn statistik deskriptif, uji normalitas, dan paired sample t-test dengan bantuan SPSS 26. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata nilai pretest sebesar 41,14 meningkat menjadi 88,52 pada posttest dengan nilai signifikansi 0.00 (< 0,0), artinya terdapat perbedaan signifikan antara hasil belajar sebelum dan sesudah pembelajaran. Nilai rata-rata N-Gain sebesar 0.81 menunjukkan kategori peningkatan tinggi. Hasil ini membuktikan bahwa pembelajaran langsung dengan media PowerPoint kontekstual efektif dalam meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa, terutama karena visualisasi materi dan stimulus kontekstual mampu meningkatkan pemahaman konsep serta keterlibatan siswa dalam pembelajara.
